 Hearts (A)

I’m looking forward to the game. It’s great to get the season going, and Tynecastle is one of my favourite stadiums to visit. That said, I can’t actually remember seeing us win there, but I can remember a few heavy defeats!

I was listening to the latest Open Goal podcast on the way to work, and Andy Halliday said “the Hearts boys” have been raving about the new signings, apparently, there’s “not a bad one” among them. They’ve got a squad of 31 and the quality sounds as strong as ever. I think he mentioned Braga as the standout.

It’s going to be tough, of course it is, but I’m really looking forward to it. And with the other three group games to come, I still think we’ve got a decent chance of progressing, regardless of how things go on Saturday.

Yes. Only one who hasn’t was Findlay.

couple of mates were at a Q+A with management on monday and few interesting things came out.

Penrice was sold as bid matched the analytics in terms of peak value based on stats and remaining contract length etc.

Findlay wouldnt have been signed soley based on analytics but that added with the charachter ref from mciness persuaded club to buy him.

Josh Mulligan who went to hibs was never on the radar based on the analytics, he didnt score on any on metrics.

Not sure what saturday will be like. Only 3 stands open and wheatfield stand that runs length of the park opposite new main stand isnt open.

when the draw was made I was happy with Hearts first game I thought our recruitment at this stage would have been stronger than it has been and we could go there and at least give them bit of a game.

Just now I`m not so sure it will probably be like the Aberdeen game comfortable home win.

We very rarely win at Tynecastle. You could argue the league cup game as a victory when Cardle scored that beauty and we won the shootout but I would have to go back to the late 1980’s for our last victory there.

Living in Edinburgh, I would definitely have been atTynecastle had it been a 3 o`clock kick-off. However, I already had a ticket for the
Il Divo gig at the Castle. Whatever the result, I hope, and believe, the Pars will do credit to themselves.

The celebration after McManus` goal at Tynecastle was superb, not had many outstanding pars memories in the last 10 years in big games but knocking hearts out the cup has to be one of them.

Hearts have been busy this summer to get back up the table, so it`s a huge ask for the Pars to get anything out of the game, looking forward to seeing how the players cope with the occasion. Don`t think Lennon has many friends on that side of Edinburgh...

I’ve no idea why either tbh
Worth noting all the tickets in shop are printed £15 on them regardless what you actually pay for them in there.
So a child you pay £5 but still get a £15 ticket.
Probably a good thing if you want to all sit together.

I`ve only been there once, when I was a young teenager. Can`t remember the score but we got pumped (maybe 4 nil). The place stank like a vagrant`s baffy (slipper to the posh folks). Is that still the case?

I`ll take a draw right now, park the bus and win on penalties.

It depends on the stage of the brewing in the brewery next to it. Some times it’s rotten and other times it’s ok.

The reek could also have been from the North British Distillery which is very close to Tynecastle, just behind the Wheatfield stand.

Tragically the Caledonian (Caley) brewery closed in 2022, leaving only Belhaven of Dunbar owned by Greene King and Wellpark in Glasgow, now part of the C&C Group, as the last surviving members with roots in previous centuries of Scottish brewing.

Nowadays it`s craft beer producers of varying sizes - I believe Stewarts Brewing of Edinburgh is not too far from Tynecastle ?

The smell around Jam Tarts Land may well be, as Wotsit says, eminating from the distillery - the early stages of spirit production involves mashing and fermentation similar to brewing.

Pilot are in Leith and there`s one out at the Gyle/Sighthill.

Most of the mass brewers have merged and moved to mega breweries rather than the traditional ones.

That’s true in England. How long Belhaven will still be with us is difficult to determine.
A few years ago a group of kindred spirits visited Dunbar and were hosted by the head brewer Roger Howell - he told us he had just completed his next yearly forecast.

His reply to the question about the next 12 months trading was “I hope still here in operation” !!!

I asked in the shop. Apparently it’s standard practice in the SPL as the big clubs are always over subscribed for away ticket allocations and have mechanisms to choose which fans get tickets. They therefore need paper briefs. If there were online sales then the most loyal fans could not be looked after by their clubs.

Fair enough, but I don`t understand how it`s easier to restrict physical tickets to ST holders than online tickets. We were allocated 1600 I think which is probably enough to make sure demand doesn`t exceed supply.

Anyway, back to the match. NL is saying on COWS that our pre-season prep is probably the best he`s been involved in.

About 15-20 years ago Celtic & Rangers started charging us (and everyone else) for selling our tickets to their fans. Thus keeping even more of the money in Scottish football in the pockets of the richest clubs and less in everyone else`s. They were always against going back to the cup-like split of the gate like in the days of old, but then they found a way they could dip the tills in their away games as well.

I liked the idea of online sales as it meant we could dodge their money grab (if we ever get them at East End again). Why should we care about which of their fans come?

Anyway, that was ages ago, maybe they stopped it but I doubt it. I wonder if we charged Hearts & Aberdeen?

Bene is unfortunately done. He just doesn’t have the skill set anymore. We saw it clear as day when we tried to “build from the back” his distribution was awful. It’s harsh but the game’s moved on and he hasn’t.

Mullen on the other hand is someone I’m genuinely excited to see more of. His positional sense is one of the best I’ve seen in a Pars top. He always seems to be in the right place at the right time and made some massive tackles at crucial moments last season.

If he continues that form, I’d be absolutely shocked if we don’t have Scottish Premiership or even English Championship clubs asking about him.

Unfortunately other clubs won’t need to ask about him as he only signed a one year deal and he could sign a pre contract in January. Unless we can tempt him with an extension…

I’d love to keep a hold of him as I genuinely think he’s the best centre half we’ve had since Skerla. He has natural quality and he’s only going to get better. If we only get to enjoy him for this season then so be it, but what a difference he makes. I`d absolutely love him to stay longer but even if he doesn`t, no doubt he`s one of the best signings we`ve made in years. In fact, probably the best bit of business we`ve done so far was keeping him around.
