There`s no thread on this yet so here we go.
I`m heading through tonight, becoming a regular thing after not really going to any Scotland matches for years. I enjoy my trips to Hampden, mainly as it gives me an altogether different set of emotions and new ways to be disappointed by football. A change is as good as a rest, you know what they say.
Could be any result tonight but I`m buoyed by the fact that some of our key players are heading into it with regular game time and in decent form.
If I`m Steve Clarke I`m getting the ball to (Gannon) Doak at every opportunity and getting the crowd on their feet so with that in mind i`m going to enjoy his four minute cameo off the bench once we`re chasing a goal.

Lessons to be learned about how easily they cut us apart in the last visit to Hampden but bouyed by the discipline we showed defensivley in Copenhagen last month.
Expect a similar line up
Gunn
Hickey
Soutar
Hanley
Robertson
McGinn
McTominay
Gilmour (ferguson)
Christie
Adams
Dykes
Disciplined and structures in defence with outlets to attack when we are in possession.
A win tonight and going 4 points clear of the Greeks with 3 games to play is massive whilst Danes likley take 4/5 goals off a poor Belaraus side

Id like him go stick to 4 at the back and have an extra in midfield, but I fear he will go back to 5 at the back tonight for some reason. Whoever is marking Karetsas tonight has to keep tight and make him feel uncomfy early on. If he’s allowed free rein we are in trouble.
Two big games this week, take 6 points and we have a chance of topping group. Anything less and it will be hard.

I think he’ll go a bit of a 4-2-3-1. Greeks strength is in midfield/attacking midfield. I think he’ll flood it with bodies then try and create chances from wide.

The couple of times we pressed their back line, we won the ball back and had our best spells. They`re pressing with a front 4, winning nothing when it gets played forward, and really missing Gilmour making the space. Ferguson and Christie have struggled to have the same impact.

In modern football you need defenders that are comfortable on the ball and can bring it out from defence and break forward into midfield and link play. Mullen and J Tod are perfect examples. Soutar and Hanley may be decent enough defenders but they are dinosaurs when it comes to looking comfortable on the ball and bring it out as opposed to continually passing side ways and backwards or hoofing it up the park.
Back four means we have no wing backs. Not pressing as a team either so it’s no surprised we have been dreadful in an attacking sense.
Get Tierney on, go to a back five, get wing backs up the field. Ferguson off. He has been poor every single time I have seen him in a Scotland shirt. No idea how he is revered in Bologna. Average at best.
What an opportunity we missed in 2014.

Che Adams seems to be working hard but he’s totally isolated. McTominay needs to get closer. Wingers need to get further forward as well. Played one or two patches of good football but we are losing the midfield battle. Our work rate has to go up. I don’t think we’ll out play them but we can outwork and run them - no problem.

Ferguson is an attacking midfielder played as a defensive midfielder in a negative Scotland team. Always been that way. He will never show what he is capable of. Clarke playing a must win game, but with Mustn`t lose tactics as usual. We keep hearing how amazingly talented the Greek team is, but its not exactly stacked with guys at the top. They just have a good manager with a winning mentality. The Scotland players look like they have no belief.

Clarke deserves some credit. It’s not the first time we’ve got the results we needed during his tenure. Performance means nothing if you lose. Going into Belarus at the weekend with the most points we could have hoped for 🤷🏻♂️

We got away with that tonight…..that first half was up there with one of the worst halves of football Ive ever witnessed. Thank god the 2nd half made up for it!
For the rest of qualification that has worked out perfectly for us. Win on Sunday and it’s a big chance.
Clarkes got lucky tonight though. That wasn’t a tactical masterclass at all. Poor defending from crosses and a god awful error from the keeper provided us with the points.

Scotland`s record in our last 10 WC qualifiers is W8 D1 L1. That`s a remarkable stat which suggests Steve Clarke knows how to get results, but some fans expect him to change his approach. I don`t think he will. He puts a lot of faith in team spirit, familiarity with each other and the wiĺl to win at the expense of flair and unpredictability.

Let’s not beat around the bush here though - he knows how to get results sometimes. He has his fair share of bad results in big games.
Ukraine, Greece, Hungary to name a few.
The football can also be turgid to watch. That first half tonight was awful. The 2nd half wasn’t much better, but we got the rub of the green and took our 3 chances when they came.
He needs to alter his approach in certain games. He has shown he can change his set up formation wise, but the tactical approach needs to be improved if we really want to compete at a higher level.

It looks like he got `the rub of the green` in the last 10 qualifiers. I think where he struggles is with `tournament football` which is a completely different kind of competition. I think he admitted that after the Euros in Germany and we might see a different approach if we qualify for the WC.

We could go on with this ad infinitum Dave and life is too short. The fact that they only scored one goal in the game means that our two goals was enough to beat them. We didn`t require the third goal. All other theories are pure speculation. Our second goal won the game. No point in speculating what might have happened if we hadn`t scored the third. Two goals was enough to win the game because they only scored one.
