Looks like we need two victories or a draw and a win to achieve automatic qualification to world cup. We already have a playoff place if necessary. Our form hasn`t been too convincing but we have managed to get into a reasonably good position.

Beating Greece doesn’t help due to Denmark’s goal difference, a draw is all we need. Then beat Denmark on Tuesday at Hampden.

I actually don’t get the management’s tactics. The players seem to be baffled as to what they are supposed to be doing. They are far too cautious,as we know as pars fans,in the past, that is not what we want to see. There are good players in there, but I think they are shackled by negative tactics. I predict a narrow defeat,I hope I’m proved wrong.

A boring as feck 0-0 would suffice.
Unfortunately you can bet that’s EXACTLY what Clarke is aiming for.
We have shown that we can play, we can score, Greece have nothing to play for except pride - let’s take them!

Clarke needs to GTF! When it comes to the important games he resorts to thus awful tippy tappy defensive rubbish! We saw it in the playoffs for the Euros where we should have won easily but had to rely on pens! The Euros last year we were easily the worst team in the tournament and today we are set up like we are playing Brazil not a Greece we’ve beaten twice in a year!

Maybe we could have been 3 or 4 down. We were actually 3 down.
We came back from that and from what I saw we could also have won it by 3 or 4.
Hit the bar and several crucial (or flukey) saves by their defence thwarted us.
I only saw the highlights though.

What possible reason did Clarke have for not allowing Craig Gordon to come up for the corner at the end?
Losing a 4th goal wouldn’t have mattered, and they were down to 10 men, so we would’ve had an unmarked player in the box.

I can only presume because the Denmark game was still in the balance, he didn’t want to risk losing another goal as we chased an equaliser.

If we had been playing for a draw surely he would have started with McLean in midfield rather than Christie?
For me it was a game that defied analysis. We started poorly and could have been a few goals down before we got going. McTominay was anonymous until he exploded into life and hit the bar just before half-time when we started to create a few chances. We know from previous games against them that Greece play attractive attacking football but are a bit fragile in defence especially against crosses and so it proved.
We started the second half the better team and Christie/Adams should have scored before we lost two poor goals, the second one being a mistake by Gordon who had kept us in the game in the first half. After that we went for it and McGinn and McTominay became more influential but we just fell short.
Goodness knows what to expect on Tuesday.

I watched the end again.
50 seconds left. McGinn takes the corner, and Ralston is on the edge of the D. Gordon is presumably on the halfway line where he can’t affect the game.
So Greece have 9 outfield players in the box vs our 8.
Even if you don’t back Gordon to score, why couldn’t he stand where Ralston was and allow Ralston (who’s scored a header for Scotland before) to go in the box or show for a short corner and drag a defender with him?
McGinn then wins a free kick. He takes it with 19 seconds left. The Greeks have a one man wall, and Ralston is again outside the box, so we go 8 vs 8 outfield players in the box. We’ve got Dykes, Hirst and Shankland on at this point, so the Greeks have got their hands full.
If the ball gets back to Gordon at this point, then the full time whistle has already gone.

We`re constantly told football is a results-based business and Steve Clarke knows that. It`s easy to forget we were seeded to finish third in our group. It would be nice to play a more expansive style but do we have the players to do that and still get results?

It`s easy to criticise Clarke but you have to look at what he`s got to work with...who are the players he could be picking instead who`s in the squad already?
There`s quality in midfield but defence, attack (Gannon-Doak excepted), and keeper we`re weak, and I don`t see many options not in squad that are better than what`s there.
It`s very reminiscent of the end of Craig Brown era where a team of decent `honest pros` perhaps overachieve, but there`s no replacements to come in once they`ve gone. I feel another Berti Vogts era coming on, irrespective of whether we qualify or not.

"I can`t imagine Steve Clarke told them to start like that. The players have to take some responsibility."
was over for the game and seen very limited highlights back but 3 times in the opening 5 mins Gordon launches it long, straight up the middle, over Adams head, their keeper gathers and rolls out to start an attack. We go 1 down and then we start playing out form the back, keeping th eball, controlling the tempo etc. That must be through instruction.
Main thing now is tomorrow night. Start like a train with tempo, get the Hampden roar roaring and as shown in the past we can take anyone in a one off game. Go cautious, invite pressure, crowd groaning and on the backs and it becomes a long night.

The players are trying their best for us but I think they maybe try too hard and lose their professionalism. We don`t have the best group of players in the world but they have got some excellent results. There are also a relatively new group of boo -boy fans who I wonder what they are about, werent around until a few years ago. I think the mid-week games are a nightmare and that the hard core Scotland fans from the north and northeast struggle to get there whereas Saturdays were perfect. Now we have possibly fans from other west of Scotland clubs who don`t have Scotland as their main focus in higher numbers. The Tuesday atmosphere will be interesting particularly if we lose the first goal.

Jake, I promise I’m not having a go but I’ve read your post and I’m wracking my brains trying to think of the crop of young players you allude to. Doak aside I’m struggling to think of players with genuine international potential especially in central defence or goalkeeper positions.

I`m referring to our own players who should make their way through if they play their cards right. It`s positive that Clarke had them train with the seniors for experience. I`m not suggesting they`re ready to step up just yet though.

If you spend too much time on social media (which let`s face it, you shouldn`t!) then you`d be forgiven for thinking there`s two schools of thought. Clarke is either (1) making the most of the tools at his disposal or (2) a chronic pragmatist who is wasting a golden generation.
The truth is, as always, somewhere in between. I like him and I`m hoping we start the match fult tilt with some big performances.

Do we have the players to compete with Spain/England/France. Clearly no. Do we have the players to compete with the 90% of European teams that aren`t at that level. Absolutely.
Greece showed that they are as bad at defending as we are yet we didn`t try in either game until it was, almost, too late.
Clarke totally summed up in his refusal to let Gordon go up for the last corner. If Greece scored again, didn`t matter. If Denmark scored again, we needed a point. it was our last chance and at that point in the proceedings we needed to chase another goal. But no, he doesnt like it

Sorry Jake that makes sense now and I 💯 agree with you. That said as Jeffery posted I had the conversation with a mate at the weekend regarding Chilokoa-Mullen and Grant Hanley, I know which one I’d prefer in my team!

Chilokoa-Mullen isn`t anywhere near the level yet of Hanley or Souttar.
I`d much rather have Findlay and Halkett who play with each other week in week out and sitting at the top of the Premier league.

I agree. I just wish Findlay and Halkett were both the right side of 30...
That said David Weir made his Scotland debut after 30 (I think), and he was a stalwart for a long time...

I mean, Hanley and Souttar are useless, but folk suggesting JCM need to give their heads a wobble. He was abysmal at the start of this season and is only just showing some glimmer of hope, in what is the 2nd tier of Scottish football.
Maybe in 5/6 years time he might make the cut, but we really need options now.
We have some good players in there, but they are aging and theres really not much coming through.
On Clarke - he talks about “negative nellies” in the support, but his play is so negative its no wonder theres dissent. Thing is, when we go for it, we prove we can match up against these teams, so its 100% down to him and his tactics.

It sounds so easy. just `go for it` and things will be fine. We don`t have the players in the final third to maximise the benefit from that style of play which is why we have to adopt a more cautious approach.

We ditched the cautious approach and went for it 2nd half on Saturday . I don`t think it went too badly .

Doubtless Chilokoa Mullen is nowhere near international level but if Hanley is the best centre half we have available then we are goosed. Even if he were to play tomorrow and have a blinder there is no way we can be taken seriously in World Cup finals with him in central defence.

Depends if you want to turn a blind eye to the Greek 2nd goal or not.

He maybe had a bad game on Saturday but overall he`s been decent for us and the 4 or 5 times I`ve seen Hibs this season he`s been more than solid too.

Connor, I’m sorry but I’ve never seen him have a good game for Scotland there is always a mistake in him.

Yeah we really need to give it our very best shot and if we fail it won’t be for the want of trying.
We still have the back up of a playoff as well but we don’t want to think about that.

Hanley has 65 caps, across which time we`ve qualified for 2 major tournaments, lost in a playoff for a 3rd and are a game away from World Cup 2026. We also qualified for group A of the Nations League and drew 0-0 at Wembley.
To say he`s never had a good game for Scotland is clearly utterly ridiculous.

Isn’t google brilliant. 65 caps that’s truly incredible and to think Alan Hansen only got 26. The state of Scottish football 🤷♂️let’s hope he’s absolutely fantastic tomorrow night.

In fairness to Hanley, I think most of his caps have been earned whilst playing English championship football or not a regular starter. It’s a big jump up to international level from that. All things considered, he’s done ok over the years.

You wouldn`t be much of a Scotland fan if you needed Google for any of that - other than maybe the exact number of caps.

Grant Hanley`s clean sheets with Scotland include Croatia (twice), Denmark (twice), Poland, Austria, England, Portugal and Spain.
But yes, clearly never had anything approaching a good game for Scotland.

He sometimes has ok games, but hes still very vulnerable to speedy skilled players. In an international team we dont need that, gets away with it in the league

All of our centre backs are vulnerable, hence why they play for Hibs, Zagreb, Al Ettifaq and The Rangers. Occasionally, they are going to struggle against forwards who play at a level or two above that.
