Posted by Tartan Army:-
TARTAN ARMY — TODAY OF ALL DAYS ⚔️🏴
Today is the 24th of June. 712 years ago on this very date, Robert the Bruce and a band of outnumbered, battle-hardened Scots stood on the fields of Bannockburn and did the unthinkable. They looked a vastly superior English army in the eye — and they sent them homeward tae think again.
They didn’t win because the odds were in their favour. They won because of something no army could match — the unbreakable spirit of Scotland.
That spirit didn’t die on those fields. It lives on. Tonight, it plays football.
And here’s the thing that sends a shiver down the spine — tonight, at that stadium, the oldest football in the world will be present. Over 500 years old, discovered right there in Stirling Castle — the very heartland of Bannockburn — that wee leather ball has seen more Scottish history than any of us can imagine. Tonight it presides over our boys again.
Scotland vs Brazil. The World Cup. And all we need — a win, a draw, whatever it takes — to make history. To go through for the first time. Ever.
Bruce didn’t need a perfect plan. He needed heart, courage, and every man standing as one.
Scotland our national team and the Tartan Army — that’s you tonight. Every fan in that stadium, every soul watching from a pub in Paisley, a living room in Lerwick, a bar in Sydney or Boston or Dubai wearing the navy blue — you are the army.
Your ancestors didn’t just hand you a nation. They handed you this moment.
RISE. LIKE. NEVER. BEFORE. 💙
Come on Scotland. The whole of history is watching. 🏴🔵⚽

I’ve been less than 8 miles from the Scotland training camp in Charlotte, NC this week but now find myself waiting to board a plane back to Atlanta when the Scotland v Brazil game is on. Not a great fan of my corporate travel company/company travel policies for not approving an earlier flight. So I’m hoping for some thunderstorm to delay the kickoff. I am wearing my Scotland top though.

I wax at both games in Boston and our performances and lack of any positive play was underwhelming. The stats don’t lie re shots on goal. We are too defensive and as everyone knows caution is Clarke’s thing. We can’t afford to be cavalier but we also can’t sit back and let Brazil play their own game. Most of the top teams are great going forward but are suspect under pressure. This is not the Brazil of old. We need to put them under pressure in the final third.
This is the moment for McTominay, McGinn, Robertson, Tierney et al to step up. They may not see another World Cup.
The fans out there are doing their bit and deserve a result.
Let’s go Scotland!

Goalkeeper : Keep the ball out the net.
Fullbacks : Win tackles, stop crosses into the box.
Centrebacks : You think you can play football, you cant. Kick or head the ball as far away from the goal as possible.
No need for any more.

1. If in doubt punt it
2. Don`t fanny around in your own box
3. Learn from your mistakes.
Every one of these we have committed regularly. And had them preached at us in school.
I have always thought our defence was inadequate, and are Sunday league standard.
And Clarke, who gave him more years, no!!

Spot on. Not sure what else Clarke could do. Picked the team everyone wanted. Shankland is like a man down. Hanley dropped and his replacement makes that error.

Yes - unfortunately two defensive mistakes trying to play out from the back cost us. At least we had some attempts on target and made keeper save in second half.

I`d love to know who these players are that we should have been playing instead of the current squad.
It also turned out Haiti weren`t the cannon fodder we were told they were after we only beat them 1-0.

Hes going to get slated cause his defensive style has got us where it has and we nievely pray for denmark moments. In terms of tournaments hes our best ever manager. The problem is in the 5 million people in this country. Nane eh us are gid at centre back. Haiti were seen as the get out of jail free card. Put 6 past them and sit back and enjoy. Didnt pan out like that. It is what it is, he dropped hanley and played shankland and we still fell short against a team of world class players

We played a back 4 in every qualifying game. We deserved to qualify but aren’t good enough at the actual tournament.

That wasn`t a negative team selection or negative tactics tonight. Without the individual errors it would have been a different match - which Brazil were always likely to win, just in a different manner, their speed of thought was much sharper.
However, the reality is we have a few players (McGinn, McTominay, Robertson) who have turned in superlative performances for top European teams, but haven`t turned up at this WC. Ferguson has done ok, the rest are average or even poorer - not their fault, there`s no outstanding alternative for any of them. Maybe Barney Stewart is the future!

We don`t deserve to go through with such amateur defending, just embarrassing to watch. Only VAR stopped it being 2 early `gift` goals. Lucky to keep it down to 3 goals as it could have been double that if Brazil were in better form. I`d give Brazil 6/10 today, they`ll get better but won`t win it.
Set of miracle results needed now. Opta has us as with a 50/50 chance of going through though.

Months of analysis, preparation and all the rest of it and undone by basic errors. Cannot blame Clarke for that, i think his interview at the end summed that up.
Looking for your `big` players to step up and set the tone but McTominay and McGinn were anonymous.
Aside from Hickey over Paterson that was our strongest lineup tonight IMO in that formation and we were comprehensively beaten so cannot really see what else we could have done tonight. The higher the level you go the more ruthless mistakes like that get punished.

Completely agree. That said, if we can cut out the horrendous mistakes at the back and play anywhere near our potential, we are good enough to give most teams a decent game. Probably too little too late now though.

We certainly have a lot of limitations in the squad, particularly up front and at CB. When you have that reality though, you need the quality players you do have to step up and make up for the limitations. None of ours did. Robertson, McTominay and McGinn were all terrible throughout the tournament.

Ach not bothered, was a nice distraction leading up to the proper stuff.
On paper before the games kicked off the results looked realistic, it was the Haiti game that knackered us, needed to score more but they showed they weren’t pushovers against Morocco.
It was the performance that is most disappointing, we worried about the opposition, the heat and in the end it was just the bargain basics we couldn’t get right.
Same old.

I think this is probably the reason it’s so grim. So many other teams go to tournaments and play out their skin and outperform expectations. We just turn up and do exactly what everyone expects and fears.

The biggest issue is that we lack real quality players both in the heart of the defence and at the striker positions. We`re so reliant on our left back and midfielders doing everything in the game, it makes it very difficult.
I thought Nathan Patterson actually had a decent enough game at right back given who he was up against and Ferguson has probably been the most consistent over the 3 games. McTominay has been poor which has been a real disappointment.
Clarke should never have been given an extension, at the very least wait until the tournament concludes to see if he`s learned anything from past failures, it`s evident he hasn`t. It looks unlikely we`ll get through to the R32, but in all honesty it`s not entertaining watching Scotland.

Clarke miffed me off during his post match conference.
Rightly praising the fans but lays it on that they wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for that group of players qualifying.
Nae point qualifying for major tournaments when you don’t do anything when you get there. I’m sure the fans have had an experience of a lifetime over there, when they look back in a few months time and realise how much money they have spent versus the actual quality of football and heart the team have provided, they’ll feel short changed.

We won our group, which included Denmark and Greece, we only lost once a 3-2 defeat away to Greece which we were unlucky to lose after a storming comeback.
We we deservedly qualified with some fine performances and hard fought results.

Ultimately there are no easy teams in the world cup. You have to be a cut above to make it through the rounds. That means scoring goals. We managed one goal in three games which is never enough in any competition. The guys tried their best but we are not good enough at the end of the day. Its really just down to that. In my lifetime there have been many "what ifs", in world cups that we have been to. But even in our hey day, we havent been able to qualify for the next round.

Cape Verde - battle to get a 0-0 with Spain, questionably tournament favourites. Also get a 2-2 with Uruguay.
Ghana - battle to get a 0-0 with England, and also denied a stonewaller late on.
DR Congo - battle to get a 1-1 v Portugal.
Curaçao - score v Germany then battle to a draw v Ecuador.
Scotland - struggle to a 1-0 v Haiti, flop v Morocco after 70 seconds, lose 3-0 to Brazil, going on 6 if it wasnt for Angus Gunn.
This is what is so frustrating about following our National team……
Canada, South Africa and some of the above all are out of or could get out of their groups whilst we will most likely be coming home.

As others have said, I thought we were a bit fortunate to make it there after the performances against Greece and Belarus. It took three worldies against Denmark in that last game. Thats not to say the players and manager don`t deserve credit for qualifying, but very little in our performances gave me confidence that we`d go there and do well.
We got a bit of a rough draw in my opinion - nobody else had to play two from the world`s top 8 in the group stage. But other teams of our level or lower seem to have been fired up, whereas we just looked terrified.

Same old same old. The defending was disgraceful last night.
2 jobs - get a point & if you can`t do that, keep the score down to try and get through with 3 points.
Failed miserably.
Yes it`s been a great trip but the displays have been awful - 3 major tournaments with 1 win and 2 draws just isn`t good enough.
I thought at one point we were going to have another Germany type gubbing - especially if you add in the (wrongly) disallowed effort.
Loads of teams getting draws & we had 2 chances at it.

Being old enough to remember all these campaigns from 1974 onwards when we`ve had better players (Law, Dalglish, Bremner, Souness, Strachan etc) than the present squad and managers like Stein and Fergie involved, but still being left disappointed, I wonder if there`s something in the Scottish psyche which means we just can`t cope with high expectations. For all our alleged `gallusness`, when it comes to the crunch we`re a bunch of `timorous beasties`. I hate to bring politics into it but, let`s face it, we don`t even have the confidence to run our own affairs.

I think a group of Brazil, Haiti and Morocco is probably about as tough as we could`ve gotten when you compare it to the strength of some of the other groups. Getting through was always going to be about beating Haiti and damage limitation vs Brazil and Morocco - To go gift wrapping 3 goals for them is criminal and its frustrating how poor they are to lose.
I don`t buy into this idea that our squad isn`t good enough. Congo held Portugal to a draw, Ghana held England to a draw also - Both lower ranked teams than us, with poorer squads, playing against sides on par with Brazil. There`s other teams lower than us like Bosnia, Cape Verde, Saudi, South Africa who have managed to get results against much higher ranked opposition, yet we can`t.
It`s just frustrating that we`re at another tournament embarrassing ourselves

I`ve got over it now. It could have been worse. At half time I was thinking this is gonna be stinkin if we lose seven nil, we`ll never hear the end of it. A 3-0 defeat is unremarkable and can soon be forgotten.
I think we got egg on our faces but I haven`t got through life without egg on ma face a few times and neither has our fitba team.
I go along with Parrot, IndiaPar1 and VEE, our scores weren`t all that bad - we just weren`t good enough. I don`t agree with those who suggest that we might as well not have been there.
Speaking only for masel of course - I`m not even despondent because I knew I`d be a fool to build up oor chances and my hopes too far.
I`m Scottish, they`re still my team and I want no other. If it`s true what`s been said about the tartan army - being friendly and fun and giving theirsels and everybody else a good time - that`s somethin I`m pleased about.

I think we under estimate the teams in other countries. I also think that players may be high earners but that doesn`t make them better players than others around the world earning less. I have spent quite a bit of my working life in S America and Africa, and regularly saw teenagers and adults kicking the ball around at all hours of the day and night in 30-40 degrees of heat. Now that alot of organisation has been introduced into these countries in terms of football structure they have come on leaps and bounds I think. I recall a number of years ago going home from an event at 1am on a Sunday morning in Lima Peru, and there were literally 100 or so people playing football under lights on different pitches. As an aside, when the taxi drivers knew you were from Scotland they always recalled the time when they beat us in the world cup...

I spent 10 days in the Boston area and went to both matches. I’m left with the wonderful experience of being there but total frustration at the Scotland performances. Forget Clarke, team selection, tactics, the heat and humidity.
The bottom line is we’re not good enough. Schoolboy errors, lack of game management and the poor performances by our ‘big name’ players collectively led to the results we got.
We don’t deserve to go through to the next stages.
I saw us play against Brazil in 1990 in Turin and 1998 in Paris when they were truly world class and we competed to lose both games narrowly. Last night against an ordinary Brazil by their standards we were outclassed.

It was great to have them there by skill and luck, bit we let ourselves down badly, stupid mistakes and poor performnae for 80 percent of each match, to only score one goal and that was a deflection.
Some good players. But some v poor ones, who can`t do basics. And tactics that we are usually confused by..
Needs a grass roots review of Scottish football, the OF are part of that review , but it`s not to line their coffers. But to improve scottish football. If it does not happen we will be here again in 20 hrs time
