What a horrible, horrible match.
Not a scrap of sportsmanship by the fans beforehand (booing both national anthems) or by any of the players on the field, deliberately fouling to stop any player getting past them, then complaining to the ref. Hardly any shots at goal, and none on target.
Folk like Micah Richards & co saying how wonderful it is to see such passion and commitment. Sad and disappointing.

Spot on, Stanza. Anti football and a total disgrace considering the number of talented players on the pitch. They`ve obviously been instructed to scrap for everything and stop their opponents at any cost. I`ll be surprised if it finishes 11 v 11 although the ref has been very lenient.
If only both teams could lose....
Not your average Sunday League player.

To be fair, the second half so far has been far better.

The final result probably clouded my judgement but I loved that game. Proper theatre. Everyone will say England shat the bed but Argentina made the changes to try and win the game and it was fantastic watching them absolutely batter England into submission.

I`ve got to admit, I`m glad england got what they deserved, brutal, defensive football. Didn`t deserve to get anything out of the match. Aside from some flashes of fortune by Bellingham and Kane they have been rubbish at this World Cup, had the easiest group to get out of, managed to get past an aging Croatia side after a bad first half, struggled against Ghana, should have been sent home by DR Congo, scraped past Mexico and were extremely lucky against Norway. Tuchel probably did all he could to get them this far, he had to get that 6 man defence and get Harry Kane playing as a defensive midfielder to hopefully manage to fluke something else out of the tournament. Glad to see Argentina show their class, a proper footballing nation. Also good to see the Argentinians with their "Las Malvinas son Argentinas" banners at the end of the game. Hopefully after booting the english out of the World Cup they can now boot them off Las Malvinas too.

England more than matched Argentina for 60 mins. They had a press working and Messi saw very little of the ball. Then, they decide to give the very best team at breaking down a low block a chance to break it down for over 30 mins — madness. Southgate could have lost that game playing the same way.
You cannot beat Argentina if you allow Messi to catch his breath while walking near the 18-yard line. But by playing a low block, England let the little man undo them. Spain won’t make that mistake, as they didn’t do that with a lead v France.

Rice and especially Anderson must be the two most overrated players in England.
Rice is running on fumes. He`s quality and seems a really decent guy to boot.
I`m less sure about Anderson; seems solid enough but isn`t a £100m player in my view.

Game Management mode or protecting your lead when is the right time if there is one to do it ?
In Kirkcaldy last season we went in 2-0 up and were incredibly dominant with it, we came out 2nd half and decided to just protect what we had which ultimately invited pressure and let Raith back into the game.
I do wonder when you are dominating a game or in Englands case look the more threatening whether it`s a good move to change something that`s working. Everythings clear though with the benefit of hindsight.

In the Raith game it seemed reasonable. Basically confident that they weren`t good enough. Although from memory they were better second half.
With that much talent available last night it was mental in my view.

I don`t think there was necessarily an issue with England becoming more defensive but they posed almost no threat on the counter attack and they couldn`t get their foot on the ball to take the sting out of the game.
The equaliser had been coming for a long time and Argentina just have that bit of brilliance to unlock teams once the momentum shifts as they were able to do against Egypt as well. Some of the crosses from Messi were outrageous

I’ve read a lot of comments and heard a lot of fans on the radio blaming Tuchel and only Tuchel for the defeat. Both Kane and Tuchel said after the game that he told them to “go get a second” after Gordon’s goal. He left the team for 17 minutes before he made the change. He made the change because they were riding their luck and couldn’t get out from their own half. He made one change that made them more defensive but didn’t make the others for another 10 minutes after that. Maybe over the next few days they’ll realise the players were at fault just as much if not more than the manager or maybe they’ll realise that some of them just aren’t at the level they’re told they are.

Argentina are certainly `streetwise` but they are also extremely good footballers. The speed, accuracy and movement of their football after England scored were quite relentless and they must have made 5 or 6 decent chances before they scored. England by comparison were like rabbits in the headlights. I think the commentators said they only had 12% of possession after they scored.

Sorry to hear that Ipswich. My Dad is English and his wife is currently going through a bad time, so would have been nice to see them win last night to give him something to smile about.
Everyone needs to remember that Englands midfield 3 cost over £350m (add ons included)…..that is absolutely mind boggling. And they couldn’t get to the final. Says it all about the “English Tax” that Premier League clubs put on their home grown talent.
Gabby Agbonlahor has been a great listen today on TalkSport and Simon Jordans about to come on……today could get better!

Bandy, in all seriousness, do you believe any one of that English team will take responsibility that they are not good enough. The actions of Bellingham after the final whistle shows that he now knows what the rest of the world knew during the game that he is not in the same class as a number of Argentinians.

His first change was in 67 minutes (konsa for Gordon) - but that was 12 minutes after England took the lead, by which point Argentina had England already pushed right back.
So the changes didn`t make England defensive.. they`d already gone to the low block.
Tuchel will take flak - but so should the players. They were the ones who sat back immediately upon taking the lead. They were the ones choosing not to press high.
Tuchel I think recognised that - his choice was to reinforce what his players were doing, or try to change it.
Against Mexico and Norway he went to reinforce - it worked - and he was praised.
He made the same decision against Argentina - it didn`t work, but I do understand why he did it.
It’s a fair point Bandy. What I would say though is they looked really disorganised at the back as soon as the changes were made like the message on how they should line up hadn’t reached the players. The number of them with their backs to the players for the corner at the first goal was comical.

England was defending comfortably before Tuchel made his changes.
All tournament, Argentina has been very good going forward and getting a goal when they needed one, but they have conceded quite a few goals as well:
- they gave up 2 leads to Cape Verde
- they gave up 2 goals to Egypt
- they gave up 1 lead to the Swiss
So England should have tried to get the second goal. If you do that and give up a goal, you’re still in the game. You bring in some fresh legs in midfield to reinvigorate the press and another threat to hit them on the counter. It’s not rocket science.

World rankings are Argentina 1, Spain 2, France 3, England 4. Looks pretty accurate to me. England were always going to be the fourth best team in the semi finals and if you remove Kane and Bellingham ( neither if whom had much of a game) the defeat was predictable

There is a fascinating video clip doing the rounds on social media of Paredes talking to Scaloni during a break in play explaining why Argentina couldn`t get out cause of how England were pressing them and suggesting the changes needed. You can see the coach thinking about it and letting the players solve the problems - same in second half when Messi just started to wander wherever the space was!
Rice & Saka both looked like they were carrying knocks or illness into the tournament and neither hit their levels. Madeueke was a bizarre selection for me, Grealish, Foden or Gibbs-White would have been better IMO.
I`m amazed Mainoo never played a minute in any game, he can handle ball in tight situations and carry it up the field drawing free kicks and breaking pressure he would have been a decent option against Argentina IMO.
Harry Kane`s lack of pace is what killed England. Sitting in a low block inviting pressure is ok if you have someone to get the ball to on the break who can hold it up and carry it up the pitch to give the defence a break (it actually reminded me of the first half vs Celtic in May)
I read a couple of stats that may or may not be true but i`m sure are directionally correct and are pretty damning - after the goal England had 12% possession. And in a period of the game when they needed to keep the ball they atempted 12 passes and only completed 5. As someone says above only 7 touches in the Argentina box all game (2 of them were the head of Dan Burn in the final seconds with ball being lumped up)
A great friend of mine is a traveling English fan and we got to meet up in Nashville bizarrely during the tournament, the banter was great. I would have loved for him to experience winning the world cup but happily sent him the get it right up ya text as well !

Now that my initial glee has subsided and while the laughs are still plentiful it must be remembered that while we make the rightful claim that as soon as England come up against anyone really good they get knocked out there isn`t really any shame in that is there? Argentina, Spain and France are who has knocked them out of the last three competitions. Undoubtedly the three best footballing nations of the past decade. England are the best of the rest and are proving it by beating those other nations not quite at the very summit. Germany 2021, Netherlands 2024, top ten team México this year as well as the conquerors of Brazil.
Germany barely make a dent in any tournament since they won the world cup in 2014. An apparent anomalous Italian victory in 2021. Brazil looking lightyears away from being a contender again and the likes of Portugal and Netherlands continually flattering to deceive. Two finals, two semis from the last five tournaments is pretty impressive. If they ever get their tactics and mentality sorted out then it`s just a matter of time before then take that final step.
