Just read this and fair to say it is disgusting. Self serving bar stewards. They should all be donating at least 20% of their wages to a common fund.

Worth noting that anyone being pushed to work from home can claim back expenses. There's a set amount you can claim back on electricity. Think you can claim tax on office equipment.

Not sure why Corbyn got name checked there: his expenses were regularly amongst the lowest claimed by MPs in the Westminster parliament.

As a mental exercise, just imagine that Corbyn was PM during this virus outbreak and, purely for the sake of argument, that he had taken exactly the same decisions as Johnson before being himself hospitalised. What do you imagine the tabloid headline writers would be saying?

I picked Corbyn because he is probably the high profile Labour MP, the same for Blackford with the snp (maybe Mhari Black) and IDS for the Tories who isn't in the cabinet.
The previous posters also included those people when they reference mp's and politicians indiscriminately without nuance.

Here is another mental exercise for us Sammer. We can only speculate on how Johnson and the Tories would have handled this crisis if they were staring down the barrel of a general election next year. Of course they aren't because for some unfathomable reason Corbyn supported them in their quest to have an election last December.

It's news to me that the Guardian ever supported anything Corbyn did. They had one article a week criticising him when he was leader.

The Mirror? Maybe. 'Zaps' was a good choice. RT? Possibly, since Corbyn was at heart a Brexit man.

For me? I think Corbyn was a man who fought good causes but he was not one of life's leaders. He didn't know when to put the boot into opponents on either his own side or the other. It's better he never got the chance to be tested by this crisis or the media would have painted him as the problem rather than the virus. In fact they might well have made the point that socialism is a virus so it was all a bit inevitable.

We are being softened up for 'Britain Boost as Boris Bounces Back' headlines but he will emerge from illness only when the numbers are in his favour. Until then Raab and Hancock can play funeral director.

That doesn't make sense. It's an expense allowance which can be claimed for certain expenses. It's not just £10k cash given to every MP

Can't find any evidence of Corbyn donating 10k to the nhs and like you say Perkins I don't know how he would be able to as an expenses claim. He could probably afford to as he made over 140k last year. Mind you 64 thousand of that was for being leader of the opposition which he won't be getting now.

I’m in favour of this.

If I were an employee, I wouldn’t expect a good employer to leave me out of pocket if I had to buy things needed for my job.

Similarly, if I were required to work from home, I would expect to be provided with the appropriate kit.

In particular, if I were a case-worker for an MP I would probably currently be inundated with queries from people on the front-line about testing and lack of PPE, others being forced to work in dangerous situations, people whose businesses were collapsing or people stuck abroad, so getting a 2nd hand printer or a reconditioned lap-top might be helpful. All expenses will be receipted and will have to be approved and presumably will be available for selection.

I assume Lochgelly Albert's reference to Corbyn was merely a suggested headline; it hasn't actually (and indeed, as Perkins says can't) happened.

If I were an employee without suitable PPE I would be somewhat annoyed to find that laptops and stamps for MPs appear to be being prioritised ahead of my life or death requirements.

People wfh all over the country are buying their own furniture and "pulling together" without too much complaint despite very difficult circumstances, in the knowledge that it will either be sorted out afterwards through the normal expenses system or else they have a new desk that they essentially bought with all the wfh savings like food costs and commuting.

People's problem here is that it is a pretty tone deaf thing to do whilst folk are being furloughed and chucked on the dole in record numbers, when there were clearly less contentious and insulting ways to ensure that MPs' staff get the equipment they require to work from home.

I think that's unfair. Money is relatively easy to redistribute. PPE needs to be manufactured, distributed, sanitised...obviously that'll take longer to resolve than adding 10k to some expense accounts.

The PPE mess is scandal - a huge one, and the government should be pilloried - but these two issues shouldn't be conflated.

You may not have intended to conflate them - but, to me, you definitely did. No worries.

Anyhow - your point is a valid one. Our response the this is very poor, from the lack of testing, to the lack of PPE, to the delay in the lockdown. And all the Government will say is 'we're following the science' - which is 2020's 'Brexit means Brexit.

The conspiracy theorist in me tells me that when history shows we've dealt with this worse than others (980 deaths today being a grim European Record), it won't be the government that takes the flack - the poor scientists will be thrown under Boris's bus.

Johnson has been absent during the days of the highest death tolls. We are already hearing anxious stories about him maybe returning to work too soon.

I would not worry on his behalf. He will return when the numbers of dead are falling and the lockdown can be eased. I expect a rejuvenated premier will address the nation with the good news.

As for the eventuality of the UK finishing bottom of the survival league, that can be laid at the door of China misleading our scientists and the EU refusing to give us free gear. After that the main thing will be to get Brexit done and cut our hedge und managers some slack.

They already have £26k a year they can claim in office expenses and now they're allowed another £10k.

There should be very little in the amount of excess claims, if any, that need to be made and anything that does get put in should be subject to some pretty rigorous checking with our politicians rather dubious previous on expense claims.

10k is to assist their office staff to work at home and purchase laptops and printers etc so they can continue to help their constituents. Given the vast amounts of money already provided by the gov. This is a drip in ocean. this money seems reasonable. Far more reasonable than footballers getting paid on furlough.

Now you could assume that one of two things might have happened:

1) It could have been made up by someone and spread quickly around the internet

or

2) It could be the truth and the doctor really said it, then all mention of the doctor was removed from the face of the earth and all hard evidence was deleted from the internet and people were paid/threatened so that they wouldn't say anything.

I could be persuaded either way. They both seem equally likely.

It's actually very difficult to erase all evidence from the internet. You might think it's pretty easy and money will stop anything being seen but there are always ways to find out if you know how to.

It's actually very difficult to erase all evidence from the internet. You might think it's pretty easy and money will stop anything being seen but there are always ways to find out if you know how to.

Miss Brasier did no a bad job

I have no idea who that is but anything you want to know will still be available to read if you know how to get it.

Apologies. I was indeed being sarcastic.

Even when governments and billionaires are involved the simple answer is usually the right one.

Worth every penny, they'll sleep just as effectively at their monitors as on the benches.

Cracking answer from Nicola Sturgeon today at her daily briefing when asked if she would be following the example of the NZ Prime Minister in taking a salary cut to show solidarity with people suffering financially from the effects of the coronavirus lockdown. She pointed out that her salary was still at 2008-09 levels when she and other Scottish government ministers agreed to freeze their salaries following the international financial crisis. How many people knew that?

Probably everyone that isn't a throbbing British Nationalist tbh. For some bizarre reason it maybe gets reported for a day on mainstream UK media, then swept under the carpet and back to SNP bashing...

Did the same at Wesminster and fortunately we've got quality reporting establishments like the Daily Express following their good deeds:

It was a guy from the Daily Express who asked the question today. You would think he would have known the answer he was going to get. I wonder if he'll report it tomorrow?

I'm often very critical of the SNP (particularly our local MP) but that's very humble of them not to take pay rises. It annoys me no end that these politicians have been getting above inflation pay rises whilst offering what is effectively pay cuts to the public sector.

I'll vote for a virtual parliament, not the usual shouting and screaming, but members allowed to ask questions and get something like answers.

No more expenses for 2nd and 3rd homes, drink and restaurant bills, and do the same with the other house. They can stuff their £300 a day to sit snoring after having a 5 course lunch at the taxpayers expense!

Join the Revolution, end corruption!😎🤗

I've never understood the second home thing. Surely it would be cheaper to purchase or build a block of flats and allocate one to each MP?
