 MP`s Second Jobs

Anyone else been following the investigation into this by Sky News?

Some really interesting stuff so far and more to come:
https://news.sky.com/topic/westminster-accounts-10530

This one allows you to search for the individual MPs:

Rather interesting...

Imagine how ripped off you would feel after paying Theresa May a fortune for a speech.

I saw a report of this earlier. A lot of MPs had received donations from Qatar. What`s that all about?

Basically, most politicians have been bought and paid for and their main concern is for their paymasters when it should be their constituents

Douglas Chapman received a £5800 `gift` from `Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, United Arab Emirates (UAE).` by the look of it.

What was missing from any of the reports I read about these donations was an explanation of the possible motives of the donors who made the gifts.

I struggle to see why any MP or political party should even be permitted to receive gifts or donations. Even if you accept and retain impartiality, it seems quite questionable. You don`t get given money for nothing and it`s quite clear in the UK that there have been conflicts of interest.

Some Labour guy was on arguing....he had to travel further and wanted to rent a shop in the town centre to get closer to the people.

He needed people to give him money for that.

Felt way too open to abuse.

Aren`t offices considered an expense? Every MP typically has an office. The cost will vary depending on location.

Our MPs seem to have a limitless credit card for all their expenses. Why do we not have more efficient approaches like:

- A bought block of flats close to Westminster to remove the need for second homes.
- An agreed political office bought in every constituency that is handed over to whoever is elected.

Why is it that MPs can expense second homes and hire their partners as PAs?

He didn`t go into details today but my assumption was he had an office AND also rented a shop to talk with people.

The funding discussion isn`t an easy one. Do you want a better MP who is more approachable or do you want everyone to have to work within the same limits (I can see the argument for both. Doesn`t feel right that donors effectively can influence the outcome of elections)

Meanwhile BJ rakes in another 1 million pound donation along with the free bed and board being supplied by the JCB owner.

To date the taxpayer has spent £220K on legal costs, defending him for his Partygate capers!

Yes what they need is a PM whose spouse is chief executive of the ruling party and can lend that party £100k out the fat salary he/she earns from the eejits who donate to said party…

Parbroiled - I have to admit, the levels to which your arrogance can stoop is quite astonishing. Your admittedly p*ss poor attempts at trolling really just highlight a lot of insecurities that you quite obviously have yourself. In layman`s terms this is referred to as projection. It seems that you simply dismiss a whole political movement that you disagree with and place yourself in a higher standing, without any due basis.

While I have always had my reservations about Sturgeon, can you honestly say that you personally have achieved more in your life than say...Joanna Cherry, a top Lawyer....Philippa Whitford, a specialist surgeon...Alyn Smith, an MEP for 15 years and qualified lawyer...that`s to name but a few.

You very much remind me of the "boss" side of the "boss vs leader" style, so my advice to you (as I`m sure would be repeated my many on this forum) would be to just have a wee bit of social awareness instead of playing constant whitabootery.

It really seems that you seek to belittle those who have achieved far more than you could ever aspire to. How many countries have you lived in? How many languages do you speak? What experience have you gained that could actually be used for the greater good of your home community?

Perhaps I am simply feeding your ego by responding, but why not actually contribute instead of denigrate?

Most posters will tell you that your behaviour is tiring and you need to simply grow up.

I see the proposal to use the 2024 GE as a de facto Indy ref will now have another option put to members- use the 2026 Holyrood election instead for the same purpose. What next? 2028 GE perhaps?
The only purpose in this scam is to ensure another £200k a year rolling onto the Murrel’s pockets. Now THATS what you call an achievement!

Boris Johnson can pocket that with a couple of lectures but that`s OK, it`s Westminster.

If folk are daft enough to pay to hear a buffoon slavering his tripe, why shouldn`t he coin it in?

I didn`t question his right to do it but apparently it`s perfectly OK for a WM MP to go off around the world when parliament is in session exploiting financially his status as an ex-PM.

Wee Eck - let`s not forget the Tory Chief Executive, Nadim Zahawi:
https://www.thelondoneconomic.com/news/tory-nadhim-zahawi-second-job-oil-commpany-301274/
£1.3Mn from a second job in an oil company that was kept secret and then he was appointed as a minister and chief exec of the party. Like you say though, it`s Westminster, so its fine.

No surprise there, hj. So many Tory MPs get involved in politics to further their own careers by exploiting opportunities, making contacts, doing favours, influencing legislation, etc and, despite the constraints in place, they can still keep a lot of it out of the public eye. If a fraction of the corruption at WM went on at Holyrood or any other devolved administration they would have been shut down years ago.

Seemingly he`s being done by HMRC after a long battle and underhand threats to the investigators, us lesser mortals would end up in jail for tax evasion.

The former Cabinet minister, Jacob Rees-Mogg, is joining GB News to host his own show. The Tory MP for North East Somerset will “debate the hot topics of the day” and interview guests from “across the political spectrum”, according to the broadcaster. He will also take his show on tour, broadcasting in front of live audiences in towns and cities across the country.

Rees-Mogg described the network as “a bastion of free speech” and said he had been “impressed” by its “independent-mindedness”.

It will give him something to do now that he`s no longer in the Cabinet.

I wish the papers would stop referring to `donations` when what they actually are is bribes. Westminster is corrupt, absolutely rotten to the core. The tories are very lucky the media are also on the take, and so are the main opposition
