What`s extraordinary about it? Some people are driven by money, some people aren`t. Unsurprisingly, it`s the greedy who are typically most driven by money. Perhaps "poor" isn`t the right term, but essentially anyone who isn`t considered typically rich.
There`s a term you can use for this - the golden handcuffs. You have enough to be "comfortable" (the golden) but that then restricts you (the handcuffs) as you no longer desire to earn more.
Give people just enough not to complain and you`ll be fine.

I pay the higher rate of tax in Scotland but I`m sure I could legally wangle it to pay less (pay more pension, sign up for pre-tax investments on my pay etc.).

The Guardian reports that Rishi Sunak has saved more than £300,000 in tax thanks to a cut he voted for in 2016, according to an analysis of his tax records. The prime minister has paid just over £1m in tax over the past three years, most of which was accrued on the gains he has made on his US-based investment portfolio. But that figure would have been £308,167 higher had the top rate of capital gains tax (CGT) not been cut by the Conservative government in 2016.

Capital Gains Tax allowances are halved to £6k this year and halved again the following year to £3k.
This will bring a lot more people into scope of paying CGT especially those who have sharesave / SAYE with their work (schemes that are not the sole preserve of the wealthy). If you’re making capital gains in the hundreds of thousands the change is not material but if you make a modest profit on your savings then look forward to paying tax

So Mr Sunak has published his return. What does it tell us?
Meanwhile CGT is a strange one – in some circumstance the asset doesn’t change intrinsically, it only gets notionally more valuable due to changes in interest rates or inflation (by which you used to be able to offset any increase in value). But I guess you have the option not to sell. Unless your assets are in a blind trust – perhaps the trustees should have waited until Sunak had got round to abolishing CGT altogether?
Of course taxation of different asset types is different to reflect their different provenances. For example dividends will often arise from shares that have been bought with money already taxed and will be paid from profits subject to corporation tax. And often tweaking the tax rates is designed to influence fiscal behaviour at a second order level. Perhaps the large scale movement of assets from equities into bonds as pension schemes mature necessitates different incentives?

Rishi Sunak is facing questions over shares his wife holds in a childcare agency that could benefit from a new policy unveiled in the Budget.
The Chancellor announced a pilot of payments for new childminders with more for those who sign through agencies.
Akshata Murty was listed as a shareholder in one of those agencies, Koru Kids, as recently as 6 March.
The prime minister`s press secretary said all Mr Sunak`s interests "have been declared in the usual way".
Ministers are expected to provide a written list of all financial interests that might "give rise to a conflict".
Mr Sunak mentions Ms Murthy`s venture capital company, Catamaran Ventures, in his list of ministerial interests, but does not mention Koru Kids.
The PM also did not mention Ms Murthy`s links to Koru Kids when he was questioned by MPs over the policy at a parliamentary committee hearing on Tuesday.

Rishi Sunak has ruled out any further devolution of powers for Scotland after telling Conservative activists that Holyrood should be “held to account” more for underusing its existing powers. The prime minister claimed Holyrood already had significant powers, including over income tax rates, telling delegates at the Scottish Conservatives’ annual conference in Glasgow there was therefore no case for adding to them.
``Scotland already is the most powerful devolved assembly anywhere in the world,” he said during a question-and-answer session chaired by Douglas Ross, the Scottish Tory leader. ``The SNP and the Scottish government doesn’t even use the powers they already have, so we shouldn’t start talking about any more. What we need to do is hold them to account.``
Is there any evidence that we have `the most powerful devolved assembly anywhere in the world`? I`ve never seen the point of having some control over income tax if you don`t have control over any indirect taxes. And we`ve just seen an example of a majority comprising members of all major parties passing legislation in Scotland which Westminster can apparently veto.

Rishi Sunak has refused to say whether Tory MPs accused of undermining the Commons Partygate inquiry into Boris Johnson should apologise.
The Privileges Committee said last week that the MPs, including Nadine Dorries and Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg, had tried to "interfere" with the probe.
Asked whether they should say sorry, the prime minister didn`t say, adding he hadn`t read the committee`s report.
MPs will decide whether to approve the findings at a debate next Monday.
Last month, the Commons backed the committee`s finding, in a separate report, that Mr Johnson misled Parliament over Covid rule-breaking in No 10.
Mr Sunak has never said whether he agrees with the findings of that report - and missed last month`s vote to approve it, blaming a diary clash.
He seems to favour the "not reading the report" get out clause

The government has lost its legal challenge to prevent the Covid inquiry from seeing Boris Johnson`s WhatsApps, diaries and notebooks in full.
The Cabinet Office had argued it should not have to hand over irrelevant material, but inquiry chair Baroness Hallett said it should be up to her to decide what is relevant.
The government has accepted the ruling.
It also asked to see messages from other politicians including current Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
Should be Interesting :-)

Decriminalisation isn`t the same as being legal. Decriminalisation is already implemented elsewhere,.most notably in Portugal where it has proven to be highly successful.
Of course, I`m sure you`ll tell me of your own amazing plan to resolve unnecessary drug deaths?

Decriminalisation isn`t the same as being legal. Decriminalisation is already implemented elsewhere,.most notably in Portugal where it has proven to be highly successful.
Of course, I`m sure you`ll tell me of your own amazing plan to resolve unnecessary drug deaths?
Why would he/they need a solution?
They don`t care about the typical person who dies in these circumstances and it provides a good stick with which to beat the Scottish government/SNP.

Commenting on the Scottish Government’s new “A Caring, Compassionate and Human Rights Informed Drug Policy for Scotland”, Professor Angela Thomas, Director of Heritage at the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, and co-author of the introduction to the College’s report on drug deaths, said:
The College welcomes the publication of this significant policy document and believes that it makes a number of extremely important recommendations which align with positions we have put forward in recent years based on the views of leading medical experts and clinicians.
We fully support taking a public health approach to tackling the drug deaths emergency in Scotland and we will continue to give our backing to key initiatives like overdose prevention centres which have the potential to save lives.
As our report in 2021 did, we call on the Scottish and UK Governments to work together as constructively as possible to reduce the level of drug deaths and to look at how these proposals might be taken forward; many would benefit all parts of the UK.

Here`s the breakdown from the BBC :-
Rishi Sunak paid UK tax of £508,308 on earnings of just over £2.2m last year, according to his latest tax summary.
The document, published by Downing Street, showed the prime minister paid £163,364 in tax on a total income of £432,884.
He also paid £359,240 in tax on around £1.8m in capital gains from a US-based investment fund.

The company who did this poll successfully predicted the last couple of elections pretty closely.
It`s probably too early to say this will happen again as there is still a while to go before the election.

Maybe independence supporters are beginning to realise that, whatever the current deficiencies of the SNP, voting for a Unionist party isn`t going to advance their cause. I saw Anas Sarwar the other night repeating that he doesn`t support independence and he doesn`t support another referendum but he wants SNP supporters to vote Labour to get rid of the Tories. Then what? Based on this latest poll Labour won`t need any help from Scottish voters to get rid of the Tories.

I’ve never read that it wasn’t – indeed, any evidence would appear to suggest it was. In any case, I can’t believe that such procurement would be a matter for cabinet, and even if it were, surely Sunak would recuse himself.
I did a bit of digging and apparently Infosys billed HMG £7m for services last year. That doesn’t seem a lot, but let’s go with it.
How much is the net profit margin on such contracts? 20%? Probably less, but if we say 20% then that’s £1.4m profit. Suppose they pay out half as dividends, then that’s £700k paid out. Akshata Murty owns just under 1% of Infosys, so would have netted about £7k from UK Government contracts.
Meanwhile I think Infosys paid out 41c per share and Mrs Sunak owns about 40million of them, so she would have cleared about $16m pre-tax last year.
If my arithmetic is correct (please check it) then Government contracts would seem small beer.

Ofcom has announced that it has launched an investigation into whether the GB News People’s Forum event with Rishi Sunak last week broke impartiality rules. The show has been criticised because Sunak was not subject to the sort of comeback and challenge during the Q&A that he would get from a similar event staged by an established broadcaster like the BBC or Sky News. In his sketch in the Guardian John Crace wrote: “Nearly every Conservative MP has their own show on GB News, so it was only a matter of time before it was Rishi Sunak’s turn.”
