Never mind investigating the Bra Queen lets investigate who awarded her the contract .. Wheres Boris ?

Referencing the Guardian story during an urgent question in the House of Commons, Ms Rayner said it appeared "tens of millions of pounds" from the money awarded to the company "ended up in offshore accounts connected to the individuals involved".

In response, Health Minister Neil O`Brien told MPs it had been widely reported PPE Medpro had an "underperforming contract" and the government could claim for damages, which can be followed by litigation if an agreement isn`t reached.

Mone referred PPE Medpro for the VIP lane 5 days before the company was even registered. Michael Gove has admitted receiving the call from her and passing the details on to the Civil Servants. Within weeks PPE Medpro received a £203 million contract despite clearly having no experience of providing PPE.

This is nothing but racketeering and is only the tip of the iceberg, they should all be in jail.

In this type of situation, who is to blame? Presumably the Government m, unless they were completely convinced of the ability of this new company. And as for the contract price being over-cooked, what should happen about that? If it was a genuine misjudgement, should the company obliged to refund the taxpayer to remove the grossly excess profits? Or is it a case of “buyer beware”, coupled with incompetence on the part of the government. Or maybe good old corruption??? Clearly there should be an enquiry into these and all the other dodgy PPE contracts. Quite sickening: really.

It`s a classic way of rewarding party donors at the taxpayers` expense made easier by claiming that an international shortage of PPE meant the normal strict procurement rules had to be relaxed to ensure we got supplies.

From the Guardian:-

A spokesperson for Tory peer Lady Mone said:

With immediate effect, Baroness Mone will be taking a leave of absence from the House of Lords in order to clear her name of the allegations that have been unjustly levelled against her.

As PA Media reports, the leave of absence means Lady Mone will not attend sittings of the House, vote on any proceedings and will not be able to claim any allowance.

According to Hansard, Mone has only spoken in the Lords on five occasions since getting her peerage in 2015. She last voted in April.

Not wishing death on anyone, da. I`m just saying I understand where red star was coming from. e.g. I suspect none of us would shed a tear if Putin died in his sleep tonight.....

And that`s before we consider paedophiles, drug dealers, murderers etc. Would the world not be a better place if these people died before they had a chance to carry out their heinous crimes?

As an aside, I knew the man who murdered 16 P1 children and their teacher at Dunblane, before committing suicide. I`ve always been of the opinion that it would have been better if he`d turned the gun on himself first instead of taking the lives of these poor innocent kids.

Tell me that`s an evil thought.

I don`t mind telling you you`ve lost me, da. Red Star said he wouldn`t lose any sleep over the death of some odious/evil individuals. You interpreted that as "wishing death" on these people. Only Red Star will know if that`s what he meant. I didn`t read it that way.

When a good person dies, we may feel sadness - an unpopular person dying may at best, produce indifference and at worst, outright glee. There was plenty of that on this forum when Margaret Thatcher went the way of all flesh.

Just because many posters were happy to see the back of Thatcher, doesn`t mean they were wishing death on her,

From the F.T.

A company linked to the husband of Tory party peer Baroness Michelle Mone paid nearly £10mn for a townhouse in one of London’s most exclusive areas in late 2020, months after a medical goods supplier with connections to the couple won more than £200mn worth of government contracts.

A company called Chester Ventures, incorporated in the Isle of Man in early December 2020, paid £9.25mn for 4 Chester Square in Belgravia later that month, according to Land Registry documents.

It`s the headline on their home page!

`For most of us, the pandemic was a catastrophe. But for a lucky few – those with a line to a Government Minister – it was a gold rush. To benefit friends and donors Ministers set up what leaked internal documents brazenly referred to as a “VIP lane”. If a Minister referred you, you would get preferential treatment. Ministers claim the VIP lane was politically neutral – but every politician who made a successful referral into the VIP lane was a Tory. And the sums were enormous.

We spent £12.5bn on PPE – of which over £10bn has been written off. We are now having to spend billions storing – and incinerating – PPE that ought never to have been bought.

We do not know how much of that £12.5bn went to VIPs – leaked documents held by GLP reveal the official figures are just untrue. But we do know that significant sums were recycled in the form of political donations to the Conservative Party.

Where is the law in all of this?

Despite the fact that Government’s Counter Fraud Function found there was “a high risk of fraud in the procurement of PPE” we have yet to see a single prosecution. Instead, Ministers pile pressure on police forces to devote resources to minor offences, linked to poverty, like shoplifting.

Under explicit pressure from Rishi Sunak, judges have closed the door on legal challenges. They have said, remarkably, that there is no public interest in how public money gets spent. But we think there is.

Good Law Project holds huge amounts of never-before-published material relating to PPE contracts. It is possible we hold the only copy. We have heard from multiple sources of orders being given inside the Cabinet Office to destroy electronic pandemic data.

We anticipate a year-long, journalist-led, project on the misuse of public money, centred on the pandemic. But we need your help. Will you help us?`

Yes Wee Eck bit perhaps this organisation, whose founder was a one time Labour party advisor, should spend the funds they have investigating the PPE contracts instead of taking the SNP led Scottish government to court over an unpublished climate impact report?

This thread`s about Michelle Mone who is reckoned to be one of the main beneficiaries of the way the Westminster government awarded contracts for PPE. I`m not sure what the alleged suppression of a climate impact report by the Scottish government has to do with it but if the Good Law Project wants to pursue both these cases it`s up to them.

And what if the founder of the GLP was a former advisor to the Labour party? Should he be barred from holding politicians from other parties to account?

From today`s Guardian :-

`The Conservative peer Michelle Mone has acknowledged for the first time that she was involved with a company that was awarded government PPE contracts worth £200m during the Covid pandemic.

Lady Mone’s husband, Douglas Barrowman, has also acknowledged for the first time that he was involved in the company, PPE Medpro.

A representative of Barrowman told the Guardian that the Isle of Man-based businessman was an investor in PPE Medpro, and chaired and led the operation to supply personal protective equipment.

The admissions raise questions about years of denials from the couple. Until now, Mone and Barrowman have consistently and emphatically denied to the Guardian, via lawyers, that they were involved in the company.`

Michelle Mone says she "regrets" not being more transparent about her links with a company that had UK government contracts during the pandemic.

PPE Medpro is being sued by the UK government for £122m plus costs for "breach of contract and unjust enrichment".

It is also being investigated by the National Crime Agency (NCA).

David Cameron made Baroness Mone a Conservative peer in 2015. She has been on a leave of absence from the House of Lords since late last year.

The entrepreneur, who founded lingerie firm Ultimo, is being investigated by the House of Lords commissioner for standards.

She says she initially denied involvement due to legal advice.`

Assuming that £60m has been wisely invested ( it`d be rather bulky to stuff under a mattress), how much annual interest will it be accruing? Probably far more than any of us could extravagantly spend. And to think it`s taxpayers` money - makes my blood boil.

From Aunty :-

Asked if Baroness Mone should be expelled from the Lords, Sir Keir said: "I don`t think she should be in the Lords. I think the government should be held to account for this."

Speaking on a hospital visit in Leeds, the Labour leader called for the government to make a statement in the House of Commons on the issue.

He told reporters the government had "serious questions" to answer, including who started the conversations with Baroness Mone in the first place.

Earlier, Energy Efficiency Minister Lord Callanan said he hoped Baroness Mone would "see sense" and "would not be coming back to the House of Lords".

"I think she should have declared her involvement in that in the House of Lords register, and there is guidance available for that," he told Sky News.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the government was taking the issue "incredibly seriously" and was pursuing legal action against PPE Medpro.

However, he refused to comment further, citing the ongoing criminal investigation.

Get the Kettle on and the Popcorn out :-

Asked about her admission she did not tell the truth about her links to the company, Mr Sunak said: "The government takes these things incredibly seriously, which is why we`re pursuing legal action against the company concerned in these matters."

"But it is also subject to an ongoing criminal investigation. And because of that, there`s not much further that I can add," he told reporters on a visit to Scotland.

Responding to Mr Sunak`s comments on X, Baroness Mone said: "What is @RishiSunak talking about?

"I was honest with the Cabinet Office, the government and the NHS in my dealings with them.

"They all knew about my involvement from the very beginning."

Michael Gove is likely to be called to give evidence to the Covid inquiry over his role in the Baroness Mone controversy, i understands.

Lady Hallett’s inquiry into the pandemic is expected to call up a number of current and former ministers involved in government contracts for PPE at the height of the pandemic, including the then Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Mr Gove.

The inquiry is to begin investigating the issue of PPE procurement, and the extent to which there was a special fast-track for companies with links to the Government, in spring next year.

Much as I dislike Mone, she`s played an absolute blinder to embarrass the government today.

Lord Bethell (who was a Health minister during the pandemic) shared a text message from 2020 between himself and Mone claiming that she never disclosed her interest in PPE Medpro to him.

Problem is that he also told the Coivd inquiry that he gave his phone to a family member after the pandemic in March 2021 and therefore could not recover any texts/WhatsApps from before that date...

Perjury anyone?

Today`s development per the Guardian:-

Michelle Mone is facing legal action following her admission that she lied to the media over her links to a PPE firm that won controversial government contracts during Covid. The businesswoman and peer told the BBC at the weekend that she repeatedly denied being connected to PPE Medpro because she wanted to protect her family from press attention and she declared: “That’s not a crime.”

But several news organisations incurred costs of their own responding to the letters from lawyers acting on behalf of Mone who were threatening libel action and one of them, the New European, has said it will go to court next year to try to recover the money it was obliged to spend as a consequence of her lies. Matt Kelly, the paper’s editor-in-chief, said:

`We were forced to spend several thousand pounds of costs in legal fees responding to her mendacious threats. We want our money back. More than that, we want to establish a future deterrent against wealthy individuals willing to lie to stymie honest reporting. We look forward to seeing Mone in court in the new year.`

Nothing will happen though. We live in a country where:

Fiddling your leccy
Not paying a TV licence
Shoplifting

Result in jail sentences in certain circumstances yet tax fraud and deception seem to be ignored. Can`t jail the rich, can we? And I don`t mean the rich earning £100k+ p/a. It`s nothing new, the only difference is it`s reported more.

As Jimmy Cricket said .. C`mere There`s More :-

The husband of Tory peer Michelle Mone is connected to a company that tax experts say should be investigated for fraud, BBC Newsnight has found.

Doug Barrowman has previously denied involvement in Vanquish Options, a firm that falsely claimed customers could write off money owed to the government.

But BBC News has identified Vanquish bosses with links to Mr Barrowman and seen emails sent by Vanquish from the same IP address as his Isle of Man HQ.
Mr Barrowman has denied any wrongdoing.

Tax experts suggest there are grounds to open a criminal investigation into Vanquish Options.

One of Mr Barrowman`s firms, PPE MedPro, is already being investigated by the National Crime Agency over contracts worth more than £200m to supply PPE to the NHS during the Covid-19 pandemic.

£69000000 - £200000 = £68800000

Still a tidy return for a couple of phone calls to China for blue bin bags

BBC finally picking up the information Dan Neidle posted on Sunday today.

Barrowman and Mone seem like thoroughly dislikeable people but they are part of an elite who are almost all the same.

Not sure why but it got me thinking of when it turned out Sunak owned shares (indirectly he said...) in Moderna who just happened to be awarded the vaccination contracts.

So much insider trading, scratching of backs, and lining of pockets.

From Aunty :-

A former lawyer for Baroness Mone has apologised to the BBC for false statements he made about money her husband, Doug Barrowman, gave to the Conservative Party.

Lawyer Jonathan Coad told BBC News in December 2020 that Mr Barrowman had no ownership role with a firm that has donated more than £150,000 to the Tories since 2017.

But evidence has since emerged that suggests that was not the case.
Mr Barrowman has declined to comment.

Mr Coad has already apologised for misleading journalists about Baroness Mone`s links to PPE Medpro, which is being sued by the government for supplying medical equipment worth £122m that has never been used.

PPE Medpro is defending the claim.

From the F.T. :-

About £75mn of assets linked to Conservative peer Michelle Mone and her husband have been frozen or restrained by court order as the pair face a National Crime Agency investigation into alleged PPE fraud.

The court order seen by the Financial Times covers assets including a six-bedroom Belgravia townhouse, a country estate on the Isle of Man, and 15 accounts at Coutts, C Hoare & Co and Goldman Sachs International.

The December restraint order blocks Mone and her Isle of Man-based financier husband, Douglas Barrowman, from selling some of the assets and places restrictions on others.

The order was consented to by Mone and Barrowman and followed an application by the Crown Prosecution Service under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

Apparently David Mundell, former Tory Scottish Secretary, wasn`t happy with her appointment to the Lords as the Scotland Office had not been consulted as was normally the case. A lot of Scottish business people were unhappy with the appointment as they did not consider her a `substantial businesswoman` but PM David Cameron, who considered her a `leading entrepreneur`, ignored all objections.

Mone isn`t even the biggest entrepreneur in Glasgow let alone Scotland! She`s a self promoting fantasist who, whilst modestly successful, hasn`t achieved much of note.

Her social media posts suggest she`s quite chaotic, verging on unhinged.

“had no discussions and am not seeking to go to the Lords” 🤦‍♂️

What he was discussing was the reform of the HoL and that being of potential interest. What helps is when you read the FULL story rather than picking out the bits that suit your own narrative.

It would be like me claiming Alba are Thatcherites because Hanvey enjoys quoting her.

Bra tycoon Michelle Mone did not join her husband Doug Barrowman, 58, in court, with the entrepreneur and six co-defendants on trial in Spain in a £5million embezzlement case

The wealthy husband of Baroness Mone went on trial for tax fraud yesterday after failing to get the case thrown out.

Doug Barrowman and six co-defendants are on trial in Spain in a £5m embezzlement case.

Bra tycoon Michelle Mone was not with her 58-year-old husband in court, who faces five and a half years in jail if found guilty.

The pair are separately under investigation for fraud by the National Crime Agency for their part in a £200m “VIP lane” PPE deal first exposed by the Mirror.

Around £75m of their assets have been frozen by court order but the pair deny all wrongdoing.

Three years after the investigation began charges are made in the midst of a general election campaign. Of course that`s just the way these things work out sometimes.
