Whilst showing great diplomacy, courtesy and sometimes complimenting Vladimir Putin, the US president extended nothing but insults to the Ukrainian president.
The fears of the potential humiliation of the French and British leaders visit to the White House proved to be unfounded but they must surely now be in the firing line as hard decisions now need to be made on our "Special Relationship".
If Putin introduced the world to a possible WW3 then Trump has surely promoted this and brought us all much closer to that scary reality by distancing himself from NATO and hiding behind his vast ocean.
His pursuit to steal a deal on rare earth minerals whilst offering zero in return but insisting that Europe police and secure his rights can only be described as a joke.
Our UK, EU and NATO leaders have some very hard decisions to make and it could possibly put us all in the cross-hairs.

Starmer looking like a right tw@t now with that “olive branch” of a second state visit he gave Trump the day before. Been played like a fiddle. Only way this war should end is a with a full retreat of Russian forces and restoring Ukraine to how it should be.
Of course, Messers Putin and Trump will not allow this as the minerals they seek are deep below Ukraine. Fun times ahead…….

You are not getting Starmers roll in this. Someone has to try to keep the lava in the volcano until the folk on the mountainside are fully prepared to respond to the eruption.
Starmer did what diplomats have to do. We live in very treacherous times, and we know pandering to the monster`s ego keeps it calm.

Totally correct Parrot.
Sending Macron and Starmer was a tactic to try and set the stage for Zelenskyy`s visit. To massage his ego. To try and sway him to offer some sort of reassurance to Ukraine in return for the mineral rights.
I have now resigned myself that last night`s bullying tactics was ultimately inevitable as Trump has not forgiven Zelenskyy for campaigning for Kamala Harris and he is simply seeking revenge.
My mate in Moscow is bewildered at how tight the arms of the West were securely gripping Putin`s neck only for that grip to loosen and he is invited back to the party as if nothing has happened.
Putin must have something on Trump 🤔

You have to remember that while Trump has the title of President, he is really just a businessman who cares not a jot for world affairs or wars.
His meeting in North Korea in his first stint was a major clue to this.

Ukraine has limited options if they truly seek a resolution. They either face a full takeover by Russia, losing everything, or they accept the deal with the USA, which offers the border protection they requested, but at a price. Trump, being the businessman he is, won’t send resources without something in return. Meanwhile, Europe will never reach any consensus on the matter.
I would also have knocked out the reporter who asked about wearing a suit! I’m sure a suit doesn’t define any person or their ability, just an attempt to embarrass him

It`s called salami tactics and was first coined in reference to soviet encroachment.
Part of the german unification negotiations between James Baker and Gorbachev was that NATO would not go "not one inch eastward".
16 countries have joined nato since then.

So Putin`s solution to the encroachment of NATO nations is to *checks notes* extend Russia into Ukraine making "Russia" even closer.
Why is Russia bothered about NATO nations? No one`s plotting to invade Russia. I`d be more concerned about the other side of Russia given proximity to the US.

NATO was set up to with the express purpose of stopping Russia, yes you stop encroachment moving closer to the opposition lines.
Don`t worry about the Russian eastern expanse, while Siberia and Alaska are close in terms of landmass the areas of large population are about 3000 miles apart, no battles will be fought there.

Putin or Gorbachev have ZERO rights to tell any sovereign country what organization they can or cannot join.
Imagine where they would tell us to go if we demanded the same from them?
This is a land-grab by Putin pure and simple. He has offered Ukraine security assurances before in return for Ukraine to surrender all nuclear weapons. How did that work out for them?
Now Trump is attempting a land-grab of his own. The price? Zero. Great deal eh?
But it gets worse, in return America is willing to offer Russia every concession they want including guarantees that Article 5 will not be triggered. In fact the Americans are on record stating that Europes defence is no longer an American concern.
So whilst British troops are deployed as Peacekeepers to Ukraine and protecting Donald Trump`s new territory, Russian troops can take pot-shots at our soldiers without any consequences that Article 5 would be triggered.
This resembles a mafia protection racket. Trump is bullying Ukraine and blackmailing Europe to do his bidding.
As it currently stands, we do have a deal with the USA and it dates back to 1949 when NATO was first formed. Trump is no deal-maker. In fact his hints to dissolve NATO would make him a deal-breaker

The agreement was with NATO that they would not expand, not dictating which countries could join.

Worth pointing out that only 17% of the pre-war Ukrainian population are ethnically Russian, while 31% considered Russian their first language. The reason for this disparity is the Brezhnev doctrines, which basically turned the Soviet Union into the Russian Empire. So the stuff about "ethno-Russian lines" is just nonsense. Also, does it not have a wee bit of a Grosse Deutschland type vibe to it? I thought one of Putin`s goals was "De-nazification"? How odd ...
Jake is also right about the NATO stuff. There was never a formal promise. Plus the fact, should it not tell you something that the former Soviet countries pretty much bashed down the door to join NATO?

Not so much the percentages of Russian speakers, more where they congregate.
We have to take the figure from the 2001 census rather than the 2022 one because officially no one speaks Russian in Ukraine since the Ukrainian regime banned it in 2017.

I`ve actually seen this one before during my courses. What actually happened was that such a promise was mooted in negotiations between the Soviet Union and the US but it was subsequently rejected by Mitterrand, Kohl and Thatcher as it would violate the sovereign choices of the nations of Eastern Europe and so it was dropped. Try again.

Almost every liberated country from the former Soviet Block was desperate for NATO membership as an assurance that Russia could never again invade.

Regardless, this expansion has been occurring for many years. Let`s just be honest here - Putin sees Ukraine as Russian and just wants to take it. If he genuinely believes Ukraine is being held under a dictator and is trying to help, does he genuinely believe bombing the crap out of it is helping?

From just looking at your map of where Russian is the first language I can tell its BS. Russian was the language everyone used to talk to each other in Kyiv until the full scale invasion. Now people speak Ukrainian mainly.
Zelenskyy himself is a native Russian speaker and only learned Ukrainian when he became president.

In the six months following this meeting 450k Soviet troops were removed from East Germany and yes I think Moscow took any pledge as a sign to take troops home, I think they knew Yeltsin or someone like him was going to make a power grab.
I think Putin sees Zelenskyy as a western puppet rather than a dictator, you ask why he was bombing the crap out of Ukraine? I`d ask Ukraine if it really thought Donbas was part of Ukraine then why they have been bombing the crap out it for 8 years?
I think we are all in a bit of trouble here, I`m not confident there will be enough to this coalition of the willing to protect everything at risk from Putin if the US is not part of it.

BP the Russians have been nothing but awful to Ukraine for centuries. Millions died from famine in the 1930s.
The Russian language only came about through forced doctrines in schools in attempt to kill-off the Ukrainian language.
The expansion of NATO discussions were nothing more than that, simple discussions that ultimately led nowhere which may lead you to believe that perhaps Russia was unfairly treated at the time? But not me!
Russia has proven itself for a very long time that they themselves cannot be trusted. They have broken so many agreements, lied and murdered their way into power.
Every former Soviet linked neighbours, given the opportunity, declared independence from Russia and ran like hell into the arms of the West. Why do you think that is?
Ever since the birth of Ukraine it has been plagued by aggressive foreign influence from it`s bully neighbour. The border lines were drawn-up by Gorbachev himself and from that day Russia has been undermining Ukraine and slowly stealing land back.
So Russia feared NATO expansion as it threatened their borders and the risk of war? So they went to war? WTF?
I will reiterate again, Russia has absolutely no right to dictate to another sovereign nation how they decide best to govern themselves.

I dated a lass from Donetsk for a period in Sweden. She considered herself half-half ethnically but Russian to be her first language as her Mum is from Donetsk and her Dad is from Odessa. Can confirm that both cities are majority Russian speaking, but there is a trend that Ukrainian was more commonly spoken in the countryside and Russian more in the cities, even to the point where they were used interchangeably in conversation. Up until 2022 of course. As DD has kinda inferred, the Soviets made quite a conscious effort to build up the Eastern/Russian parts of the Eastern SSRs and filled them with Russians to maintain a foothold. So yeah, Bletchley talking mince once again and ignoring anything that counters his false narrative.
Putin has form for starting wars to distract the Russian population when his political power is starting to wean and the Ukraine Conflict is simply another example of that. Georgia and Chechnya are the others...
The thing is, the Imperialist mindset is quite embedded in the Russian psyche: If you talk to Russians you`ll hear often that Ukraine was "divided falsely" with blame placed on Lenin or Gorbachev. Another common one is that "the Baltic states are a joke". Rather similar to how the English call themselves British and think Scots are "the same", no?

He pretty much has Europe and Ukraine agreeing to all his demands yet he still does not seem happy.
If he feels that signing the Mineral Deal is "Guarantee Enough" then WTF is so difficult for him to come forward and say that he guarantees Ukraine`s security?
The USA and NATO have automatic rights to that "Guarantee" since 1949 so why would he publicly and loudly remove it from potential European Peacekeeping troops if his Mineral Deal was "Guarantee Enough"?

He is a deal breaker NOT a deal maker and I agree with Trudeau that he is dumb.
If anything, he`s done a fantastic job uniting the political spectrum in Canada, the UK and Europe. Time to ditch the US and form stronger bonds together.

There are some loathsome individuals attached to the Republican Party judging by some of the spokespersons who have been stating their case in the media.

When the Soviet Union collapsed Ukraine pledged to give up its nuclear arsenal in return for a security guarantee from Russia, the UK and Europe.
When Russia invaded Crimea that meant that the guarantee had to be honoured, and it was decided that NATO membership was a suitable way to achieve this in the absence of Russian continuation of its side of the security guarantee.
Apparently its only Ukraine which is expected to hold up one, unofficial, part of this agreement whilst Russia can just march around Ukrainian territory without so much as a bye-your-leave.
The enemy travels by private jet, not by dinghy.

Trump now publicly stating that Russia hold all the cards with regards to Ukraine.
What sort of negotiating skill is this to publicly declare your hand before placing your bet at a high stakes poker game? No poker face at this game. Like a wee boy cheating, he has fixed the cards to ensure Putin was dealt a Royal Flush.
Also threatening to withdraw all US troops and bases from Germany. What a time to again publicly declare this.
It hints that not only is he no longer interested in European security but he is actively promoting the prospect of war.
I fully understand the delicate tightrope our European leaders have to walk when dealing with two maniacs on opposite sides of the world but perhaps the time is now arriving for us to start negotiating our own peace deal and future.
Where is Bletchley Par to offer a dignified, balanced counter-opinion to this forum? It seems a tad unbalanced without him 🤔
