 Northlink Ferry

Noticed one leaving Rosyth this afternoon so a thought cropped up.
Currently they sail from Aberdeen to Orkney to Shetland.

Surely it could become viable to sail Rosyth-Aberdeen-Orkney-Shetland?

Would take away HGV's travelling to Aberdeen on the A90.

Also pick up the tourist traffic landing in Edinburgh without them doing the travel up the A90.

How many accidents every year in solve tourists and HGV's travelling to Aberdeen to catch a ferry!

The ferry was in for an annual docking and was the last of the 3 passenger ferries that have recently docked down at Rosyth.
Not sure SERCO (who manage and run these ferries) would entertain such a notion as much as I agree with your idea in principle.
The 3 ferries they run, Hamnavoe, Hjaltland, & Hrossey (the one you seen today) are never off the go as it is... Lengthening the route would require additional vessels otherwise the regularity of their vital service to the Orkneys and shetlands would suffer somewhat.
Personally I think it's a great idea.
Fast ships by the way... The one that left the yard today was clocked at 26 knots once it was clear of the main channel in the river.

Could an hgv get to Aberdeen by road from Rosyth faster than the ferry?

I've been to Orkney and Shetland a number of times Widtink using these ferries and they are a cracking service, spoilt by the drive to Aberdeen, hence my idea.

To have such a facility at Rosyth going unused makes no sense and maybe after Brexit who knows if a European route could be reinstated possibly to Norway.

In the meantime Shetland and Orkney from Rosyth I think would work even initially for the summer season, but also longterm especially if any of Marine Harvest's Salmon are coming from the islands to Rosyth.

TOWK.

Not thinking about off loading much at Aberdeen from Rosyth, but just get traffic off the road heading to the islands at an earlier stage of the journey along with tourists on that route.

A more practical option might be a direct service from Rosyth to the islands. There would be no benefit at all in having a two-port stop on the mainland as there would be zero commercial traffic between Rosyth and Aberdeen by sea.

It is an interesting idea, but as in all things to do with shipping it would stand or fall on the economics of the proposal.

About 6 hours from Rosyth to Aberdeen for that ferry yesterday.... Ive no idea how that would compare to driving time for an hgv

116 miles @ 55mph allowing for traffic, maybe 3 hours driving.

For any traffic heading from the South to the islands able to board at Rosyth would be a no brainer.

Very little from Rosyth to Aberdeen would change. Obviously Island links with Aberdeen would continue with the oil and fish sector.

As the ferry currently stops at Orkney each evening for an hour adding Aberdeen as a route stop as the same.

Agreed another ferry required to keep the continuity of daily service in both directions!

I think tourism would immediately increase from Edinburgh airport 30 minutes, from Newcastle ferry link 2 hours, Glasgow Airport 1 hour. Onto an overnight crossing to the islands.

If you really marketed it you could link it with the NC 500.
