The ferry was in for an annual docking and was the last of the 3 passenger ferries that have recently docked down at Rosyth.
Not sure SERCO (who manage and run these ferries) would entertain such a notion as much as I agree with your idea in principle.
The 3 ferries they run, Hamnavoe, Hjaltland, & Hrossey (the one you seen today) are never off the go as it is... Lengthening the route would require additional vessels otherwise the regularity of their vital service to the Orkneys and shetlands would suffer somewhat.
Personally I think it's a great idea.
Fast ships by the way... The one that left the yard today was clocked at 26 knots once it was clear of the main channel in the river.

Could an hgv get to Aberdeen by road from Rosyth faster than the ferry?

And although my eyes were open
They just might as well be closed

A more practical option might be a direct service from Rosyth to the islands. There would be no benefit at all in having a two-port stop on the mainland as there would be zero commercial traffic between Rosyth and Aberdeen by sea.

It is an interesting idea, but as in all things to do with shipping it would stand or fall on the economics of the proposal.

About 6 hours from Rosyth to Aberdeen for that ferry yesterday.... Ive no idea how that would compare to driving time for an hgv

116 miles @ 55mph allowing for traffic, maybe 3 hours driving.
