 Climate Change
Topic Originator: Buspasspar

The Arctic ocean is warming up, icebergs are growing scarcer and in some places the seals are finding the water too hot, according to a report to the Commerce Department yesterday from Consulafft, at Bergen, Norway.

Reports from fishermen, seal hunters and explorers all point to a radical change in climate conditions and hitherto unheard-of temperatures in the Arctic zone. Exploration expeditions report that scarcely any ice has been met as far north as 81 degrees 29 minutes. Soundings to a depth of 3,100 meters showed the gulf stream still very warm. Great masses of ice have been replaced by moraines of earth and stones, the report continued, while at many points well known glaciers have entirely disappeared.

Very few seals and no white fish are found in the eastern Arctic, while vast shoals of herring and smelts which have never before ventured so far north, are being encountered in the old seal fishing grounds.

This report was from 1922

As soon we started to burn coal 150 years ago we started to affect the climate.

This is the nonsensical selfish response of those without conscience.

Every human has an equal responsibility to live in a manner that "meets the needs of the present, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."

Your friendly neighbourhood Ghoulz.

Volcano, Earthquakes, Tsunamis, are not man made. Our small time of life on this forever changing planet is part of a wider universe and beyond our control. When we eventually wipe ourselves out, other 'beings' will start again, I only hope the next evolution of life accepts mother nature and survives in whatever form it may take.

Rasta on the side Of Big Oil. The world's gone mad. I guess that's how effective their propaganda is though.
We burn 94 million barrels of oil everyday. That's 34 billion barrels every year and we've been doing that for decades. Now I don't know what the solution is but I'm not stupid enough to think burning all that oil isn't going to have a consequence.

So where was that Ice Age we were promised in the 80's?
I'm not on the side of big oil...I'm on the side of questioning the same billionaires who cause many of the issues lying us how we are going to sort it.
Bit like the Tories telling us they're the ones to untory the last 9 years...

Lots of areas of our scientific understanding have changed since the 80s because computers.

Climate science in particular relies heavily on computer power to perform the hard sums they need to do, so it's little wonder that there has been a massive change in our understanding of the climate since the silicon revolution kicked off and sliderules got the boot.

It takes a special kind of stupidity to deny climate change. It is everywhere if you care to see.

Take, for instance, the bushfires currently engulfing the east coast of Australia at the moment. Up in Scotland, you are probably blissfully unaware of what is going on. So take a little look at the fire map on the link below. It shows fires blowing eastwards to the coast along a stretch 1,000 kms long. I have lived in Oz for a good many years and I can't remember ever seeing fires so widespread. To add to the discomfort of those facing the onslaught today, the temperature is in excess of 40C.

Climate change is very real.

Ah, but it's just natural change OzPar. And the World is flat...

Even if you do deny climate change, are people happy breathing polluted air? Beaches covered in plastic? Oceans filled with oil and plastic beads? Petrochemical companies pumping out God knows what? Water being poisoned by fracking?

People are looking towards electric cars but I'm yet to be convinced of the environmental credentials of a lithium battery. We should be investing in reliable and affordable public transport. I'm currently sat waiting for a delayed Scotrail train. I can also almost guarantee it will be a cold, shoogly, old MK2 carriage too...

I don't deny climate change. Australia had its hottest day since temperatures have been recorded. How long has that been?

Probably since about 1850, when everyone else started recording temperatures with a reliable thermometer...

Indeed.

The oil industry will fight tooth and nail to protect their hegemony and they are currently doing an ok job of muddying the waters.

I remember when the tobacco industry did something similar with lung cancer.

Come on, give us a break from your billionaires' bulldust. Sure there are bad actors out there in the climate change debate. And yes, the resources companies have a vested interest, but it doesn't alter the fact that we are experiencing climate change. We know that both sides have plenty of cash behind them and will fight their corners right to the very end.

But try your argument with the colleagues of the two firefighters who were killed and the six seriously injured in New South Wales last night.

Or the families of the hundreds of people killed and the millions affected by the severe floods in East Africa in recent weeks when two years of rain fell in 24 hours.

Or the folk in various countries around the world every day facing the effects of rising sea levels, largely due to melting ice caps.

Just three examples of many. This is the reality of climate change, not some easy-to-repeat crap from a conspiracy website.

It is happening but not all our fault as the world does have periods of higher temperatures. Just bad that we went mad as it started.I do remember fears of another ice age back in the sixties so we maybe stopped that I suppose.

The trouble is we think we know it all and the sun and earth are a wee bit bigger so they decide.

I do admit helping their decision by our actions doesn't help.

Keep smoking folks, it's cool and nobody ever died from it.

It's a scam spread by the doctors to make us pay more for fags, don't let them take your smokes!

Folk were saying stuff like that sincerely and seriously up until the 1990s. It's amazing what big business will perpetuate if it helps them cling on to relevance.

Can't say I remember hearing of an imminent ice age in the 80s or at any other time I've been alive. What I have seen though is plenty of data, plenty of images, plenty of evidence that climate change is having a massive effect on our planet. Whether it is plants maturing at different times, animals migrating, ice melting at the polar regions and in glaciers, increased abnormal weather patterns, etc. it's all out there. Yes there are natural cycles but it is undeniable that we are creating more carbon dioxide than ever, that carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas (indeed without any greenhouse effect the Earth would likely be too cold for us to live comfortably) and that doing nothing is going to make things worse. Quite why some people are so against trying to make our planet a better and healthier place for our children and their children is just baffling to me. At least the oil barons have the excuse of personal wealth and being scumbags.

I have yet to see a single climate change denier give one reason why clean air and recycling etc is a bad idea? So what if one billionaire gets richer, another one will get richer through inaction. Safe to say from Trumps America that most money is to be made from anti climate activity so that should maybe give another pointer to what direction we should be taking.
