That's almost exactly what an Italian priest said when an earthquake struck southern Italy on a Sunday evening in 1985 and flattened a church during Mass, killing many children who were in attendance.

"Where were you God, when we needed you?"

There's no doubt that the faith of those who have it, will be severely tested at times like these.

Oh come on GG there has been no religious leader come out and talk?

Actually, the Pope has asked his faithful to pray for all those affected by Covid-19 and their families all over the world. He usually addresses his audience from St Peter's every Sunday morning. Normally the square is packed with pilgrims, but now those who want to have to watch it on TV.

Would he not be better getting the faithful to pray that God simply makes the virus stop infecting /killing people?

Ach EEP that is a bit extreme and unfair I am not religious but to say they are not normal people is wrong ...who are and what is normal ? ...certainly not you or me thats for sure

Religion is a great comfort for many and as long as they do not try and convince us then I do not see anything wrong with them being religious

Live and let live EEP

Take care Stay safe

The whole religion/Gods existence argument is a moot point and I have a very pointless degree in Religious Studies.

People who believe in an omniscient, omnipotent God live in a different form of reality to me.

I learned very quickly that debating the subject is pointless, to the point that people who overtly criticise the religious are as daft as those who preach their religious beliefs. Organised religion and a belief in the supernatural, including God, is a nonsense, no doubt about it but the arguments against it are as over done as the arguments for it and so its a waste of everyones time.

I don't really want to get drawn into a religious argument or about the existence of God, that should be a private, personal matter, imo, but I'd like to make a few observations;

Believing in a Creator and/ or an afterlife, helps to ease the fear of dying for some people.

The fear of going to hell/ missing out on heaven, helps keep some believers on the straight and narrow.

Having a firm belief in a faith or religion is a source of comfort for many people.

I realise as I post this that some will ridicule this, but I worked alongside many devout and religious people, whom I was able to observe and listen to, so my observations have not been plucked out of thin air.

Think the key word here is *some*. I know someone who goes to Church, is a member of all the Church groups and is married to a minister. They can be incredibly unkind and I know they nicked a bottle of hand sanitizer out the office! Not what you'd call very "Christian".

Can we sum this thread up my simply listening to XTC's classic Dear God?

There is thousands that have died around the world and the religious state have been quiet? Where is the guy Parrot that used to spout about religion on this site?

Parrot is actually one of the decent ones who does good for the sake of doing good not for some perceived reward.
While I think Parrot is deluded as far as religion goes he is still a good guy.
He certainly doesn't want to force others to live by his beliefs.
The 🦇💩 crazy Evangelical who used to post was called Ritchie, now he is a completely different kettle of fish.

If you beleive in religion you're absolutely mental. Like, there's absolutely nothing anyone can say that paints it in any other light.

What's worse, being mental in your eyes, or being totally intolerant?

The problem is a lot of religious people are both.
Not being prepared to tolerate their intolerance does not make you the intolerant one.

I get this 100 per cent. I've watched people die who have had a strong faith and belief in something else and can see what a comfort it is.
It's actually a comfort knowing they have it.

But from grant's post you can't help but see his intolerance. Which ironically is something religious people get associated with, as confirmed by your post.

Working with people who have had the most horrific and difficult lives imaginable has shown me how religious faith can have a genuinely positive impact on people's lives.

There's a lot of intermediate steps but essentially faith in an ineffable but loving higher power can help folk come to terms with things that have happened in their lives so they can focus on a more positive life path.

I don't seem to have it in me to believe in that way but most humans do have that and it's there for a reason - it's no coincidence that every single human society has developed something that we would recognise as religion.

I've met many a-holes in my life. Some are religious, some aren't. They only common factor is that they are an a-hole.

Having Faith doesn't make you a good or bad person.

Feel free to beleive in the great big magic sky fairy, however if you mention you beleive in a great big sky fairy and some cave dwelling goat that presides in the earth's crust, expect some laughter.

Religion can be OK in certain circumstances. The world would be a far better place without it, if you can't act like a rational, fair and good human unless you beleive your actions are going to have a direct consequence on your afterlife then you're probably not a very good person.

I'm not intolerant of those who are religious, I just think they're utterly wrong on the subject of what happens after we die.

<<< I actually think this is hell we are in now.... >>>

You say 'we' not 'I', so I guess you're referring to lockdown and maybe the current government?

No, I think I'd suffer lockdown and this government rather than being a sex slave or starving to death, or suffering from Coronavirus. I think some folk might rightly say they're in hell but by comparison, my life is a picnic - food deliveries, garden, sunshine, ready access to dotnet, great memories of something I used tae like - fitba' they called it. Is it really so bad for you EEP?

Anyway, religion - whatever you and I say, it's gonna be around for a few more years. may as well chill and have a biscuit:

There's a whole host things that make people happy that are quite rightfully criticised when they come to light.

Get religion in the bin.
