We appear to have one of more field mice who have taken up residence in our back garden.
I'm planning on capturing them and letting them out in a local field.
Online advice appears to suggest 2 or 3 miles away. Seems a bit excessive. Anyone released some closer to home without them coming back?
It is turning in to Dr Doolittle's place around here as we also have snakes in the garden and garage as well.

Field mice will return if you release them close to where they are caught, after all you will be releasing them where they have been looking for food in recent weeks. Altho you think you are being humane by releasing them, at this time of year you may be taking a mother away from thier young who will relying on her milk to survive. If they aren't entering your home the best thing to do is leave them be. Unfortunately field mice don't hibernate, so come winter they may enter your house for warmth.

Cheers. I was worried about the mother and child piece. I'll leave it a while and keep an eye on numbers.....kids are worried about them spreading some jerms to our remaining elderly rabbit.

Unfortunately rabbits can catch a few infections from field mice, best way to minimise is to clean hutch more often and remove rabbits foot at night

I was about to report him to SSPCA !!!
That aside - I`d be more worried about the snakes in the garden !!!
East Anglia must be a dangerous neck of the woods !!!

I also have a field mouse in the back garden. The cat brought it in as a present. What damage do cats do to wildlife. I have had 3 birds and 3 mice and they are only still practicing their art. How many do they not bring home.

Parsmad , they reckon cats have around 5x more predation than wild animals in the same area
