Well, not the first day that England would have hoped for anyway! Will be interesting to see what England can offer in attack without Broad and Anderson.

It has happened once before I think, Raymie, way back in the 1930s.

Well that didn’t last long!
Unfortunately for England, the two batsmen who looked comfortable at close of play yesterday didn’t get time to get back in the groove, a Century for both was in reach.
Jings must have been hot though - Sun was right above them, the players’ shadows could be measured in inches.

Big day for England in day 3 if the 2nd test, Australia had the best of day 1 and 2 helped by England putting down catches at vital times .
Australia 473-9 Dec England 17-2
Mallan and Root need to have big day even to salvage a draw .

Limited overs cricket means there is a real lack of what is required to play test cricket.

How often do games last 5 days, assuming no rain interruptions ?

Emphasis on the limited over game seems to be particularly strong in England. I read one comment that, because the County Championship games are played at the start and end of the season, players aren`t used to playing `proper cricket` on pitches in high summer when they most resemble the type of pitches Test matches are played on. I wonder if the broadcasters might get involved. I can`t imagine they like showing one-sided series like the Ashes has been in Australia recently.

Broadcasters in a difficult position, They`ve hyped white ball cricket like hell and have got the viewing figures to justify it. But well fought test matches are still what draws the most interest.

The problem is county cricket is poorly attended. It is limited over cricket that brings in the finance. Each county gets a decent chunk of cash from the ECB from the central pot but limited over cricket is bringing crowds in. I used to go to cricket a lot in the 80s mainly the Sunday league and I started going to the T20 games untill they started moving the start time about. County games get hundreds watching where the limited over games will have thousands at them.

Scrolling through press sports sections every criticism in the alphabet is getting hurled, starting with abysmal, atrocious, appalling…
The biggest humiliation though is some Aussies feeling sorry for them!

Day 2 of 4th test , Australia 416-8 ,England 13-0 , England on the back foot again , the weather may be England savior .

Before the test started, the draw was the lowest odds, so the weather had been factored in.

Crawley was lucky not to be out for a duck this morning - Starc stepped over the bowling line by an inch and Crawley got a reprieve

England`s openers looked really nervous - They won`t make it to lunch tomorrow

I think claiming a 4-0 result for Oz is quite harsh for England .. surely it should have been 4 and a half to a half ?
