They are amazing people. They just saved my son. He doesn`t smoke but he got lung cancer. They removed two lobes of his rt lung but he got a clot and went into cardiac arrest. Hes on a ventilator so im off to Vancouver. If you are the praying type it would be much appreciated.

I`m not the praying type but I`ll make an exception for a few minutes over lunch to send all my best wishes in his and your directions.

I`ve been looked after a fair bit myself recently so I can 100% assure you that he`s in the best hands. The quality of medical care is unreal these days....it feels like they have made an awful lot of progress in recent years.

Thanks for the encouragement. I hear Vancouver General is world renowned for cancer care so that helps. Hes currently sedated and on a ventilator to let his body heal. Ill find out more tomorrow at the hospital. I dont want to ask his wife lots of questions, she will be stressed out

Bizarre thing is, a polish lass turned up at my daughter's church home group for the first time last week. Her sister works in Oncology at the hospital he is in.
Dunno any significance in that but its pretty wierd.

Sorry I seem to have hijacked this thread but its helping me cope with the situation.

He seems to be recovering physically but his brain is swollen. We dont know the extent of any brain damage. He had to be resuscitated 4 times. Its due to his general fitness and strength that he survived though the compressions caused damage to the newly operated on lung.
I fear he could be in an induced comma for a while but he is in the best place for treatment.

I understand a bit more what happened now.

He was doing well after the operation but after 3 days he went to the toilet and passed out. A clot travelled from his leg to his lung and put pressure on his heart causing the cardiac arrest.

He had 4 sets of chest compressions lasting 20 minutes in total. He litterally died 4 times and they got him back.

Ulthough they got to him quick a lot of the blood they were pumping was going into his abdominal cavity due to pulmonary trauma.
This means we dont know how much oxygen his brain was getting.

His whole body is swollen including his brain.
They have induced hypothermia to preserve the brain as much as possible. This causes him to shiver and use too much energy so they are giving him something to paralise him.

They reduce the doses regularly to check progress. It is very slow but there is some.

At the moment they cant distinguish between white and grey cells which isnt good but could be due to the induced hypothermia and paralisis.

I believe they are going to do an ECG today.

His kids are arriving today and it will be tough for them but their voices could help. We dont know if he can hear us.

The doc said yesterday that he will take weeks to physically heal and months for rehabilitation.

They are amazing. He is hooked up to 13 different gadgets with attached meds. They are constantly checking and adjusting stuff and giving him personal care and doing what they can to encourage us.
I love these people.
As wonderfull as they are thou, they can only work with what they have and thats the miracle we are praying for.

PARrot, I`m so sorry to hear he had to go through all that.

One positive is hopefully his age. When I was diagnosed the consultant told me if I was in my 60s I likely wouldn`t survive but in my 40s I had age on my side.

2.5 years on I`m living a normal life after some tough times recovering.

Obviously the cases are different, but all you can do is to keep positive, be strong for everyone and do everything you can. While we`ve never met, it is obvious from your posts that this is the path you will take.

You`re in my thoughts.

Had a difficult meeting today.
Graeme had his first MRI.
There are irregular signals from his brain which could indicate significant brain damage.
We dont know if it is reversable or irreversable.
They are doing another test today and we will get the results tomorrow. This test could determine whether the damage is recoverable or not.
It could be inconclusive so they will do another test.
They are preparing us for the worst but I dont believe this is the end of the journey. I believe it is just the beginning.

Praying for a positive result tomorrow.

Better news today but not out the woods yet.

There is activity in his brain so some recovery is possible. Still not sure about the extent.
He may be partially paralisedwhich could be temporary. He may or may not be able to communicate which again could be temporary.
He could get up and say. That was a good kip when is McDonald`s open.

The figure we are given is 1 to 10% chance of meaningful recovery.

Well they said his chance of surviving resuscitation following a pulmonary embolism was below 10% and he survived it 4 times.

Long way to go and lots more tests but there is hope.

Its hard watching him gag violently hoping he can`t feel it then realising you actually want him to be feeling it. Hopefully they will be able to get the tube out soon.

He opened his eyes and looked around today. He is still partially sedated. He was frowning and seemed to get a bit distressed. Dont know if he recognised our faces or voices, or just the discomfort of the tube.
We will fnd out a lot more over the next 48 hrs.

Thought Id give a wee update on Graeme jnr. Its been an eventful week. I just copied and pasted this from my fb to save typing similar again.

Another positive day yesterday. Very slight but encouraging improvements.
It is good to see Graeme more comfortable with the tracheostomy. That ventilator was brutal. He was continuously struggling with it.
As he improves control of his own breathing and secretions they will udjust the trach so the exhaling goes through his mouth rather than the tube. This will enable him to make sounds and eventually speak.
He has been moved to another ward and is occasionally sitting in a wheel chair and they have begun physio.

It is still very difficult watching the different expressions on his face and wondering what he is thinking.
Frustration, confusion, determination and sometimes he looks really upset.

It is all thouroughly heartbreaking yet encouraging at the same time.

Danna says he recognised her and the boys yesterday and smiled.
Thats just fantastic.

When Louisa and I were with him later I was talking to him about how he was improving and he lifted his left arm about 45 degrees and wiggled his fingers.

He once told me, before he went to bible school where he met Danna, that he didn`t have a testimony.
Well he has one now.

A few weeks ago he had a 10% chance of surviving resuscitation following a pulmonary ambulism. He survived 4 resuscitations.

A week ago we had a meeting where we were told his chances of surviving were 1% to 10% and if he did survive it was almost certain he would be in palliative care until nature took its course.

Now we see daily improvements, small but significant.

What a guy this is. What a fighter. I am so proud of him.

With his strength and determination, the expertise and dedication of the staff at VGH, the support and prayers from his many friends he is beating all the odds.

There is a long way to go but he and we are encouraged and supported by your prayers.

Thank you all for your support.

He is remarkable. He tries so hard to talk and gets so upset and frustrated, but he gets there. Its exhausting.
Soon he will be able to drink normally. That will be a huge relief for him.
The best things are he recognises his family, knows who he is, and responds to questions.
Very slowly and gradually. A full recovery may be possible in time. Having family around him as much as possible is key.

Yes we do thaat and sometimes he does. Before he could do that we asked him to blink but were never sure if his blink was a response or just a blink. He couldnt follow blink twice.
Now he is making sounds and some are understandable. Sometimes rarely though, he gets a word or two perfect.

Thanks Rhino.
Updates are normally posted on my facebook page below but the past fortnight has been so hectic I haven`t posted much.
Graeme was settling into rehab and starting to work with the specialist neuro physios in the gym.
He got a throat infection which was really bad. He couldnt swallow so pureed food was cancelled and he could only get a stomache feed. He also lost the very limited ability he had to make sounds ams say the odd word or two.
He then got an injury in his urinary tract due to a burst catheter balloon which ended up filling his bladder with blood clots. He also lost a lot of blood and had to get 2 units.
The blood clots were causing extreme pain for days. He had to go back to vancouver general hospital
For an op to empty his bladder clear the clots and check for bleeding etc.All of this was done and the infections fixed. He was in so much pain though i litterally had to wrestle him to contain him while the nurses did what they could. I dont know where he got the strength from he could barely move beforehand.

He was ready to move back to rehab last week but he got held back due to an outbreak of norovirus at the rehab hospital.
He got back yesterday and was in the gym. He managed to stand and walk a bit with aids.
He isnt making any sounds yet but the speech therapist will see him today. She will also do a swallow assessment to see if he can resume pureed food.

Unfortunately over the past fortnight, last week in particular, he has become quite subdued and depressed. We are working on that, and being back in the gym will help.
