He had a breakthrough year in 2021. Reached the Australian Open semi-final and must have jumped 100+ places in the rankings.

Probably better for Murray to lose in 2 rather than win another marathon session in 3.

Thought he was going to lose after being pegged back in the last set?

Never gives in, though.

What about the moronic element loudly booing during his post match interview?

Was it not the God awful Ronaldo thing that seems to be leaking into other sports. They were at it during the Kyrgios match as well.

Yeah seeing it more and more, especially in sports where you may support someone but it’s not historically tribal (like football). For example:
Formula 1 seems to have attracted an element that boo other drivers (stoked up by max v lewis)
Darts - any non English player was getting boos when going for doubles and cheers when they missed if playing anyone English - again this putting folk off like that all the time is new
Tennis as mentioned

I can understand football support rivalry (on the field) to an extent, but I never get the mentality of supporting someone in individual sports just, and only because they were born within the same political boundary as you

It appears the `boos` were in fact `siuuus`, copying Ronaldo`s celebrations after scoring a goal! I must admit I was totally unaware of him doing that.

Surely fans supporting someone from the same country, or `born within the same political boundary`, is not surprising, especially if it`s a small country where people share the same culture and will have had a lot of common experiences growing up? In that situation I think fans see the sports person as representing them, just as they would in a national team sport. It seems a perfectly natural thing to do to me.

Fair point, I suppose It’s down to perception…

for example I don’t see Lewis Hamilton, Tyson Fury, Gerwyn Price, Peter Wright, Andy Murray etc as somehow representing me on the world stage - they’re representing and competing themselves as individuals
(I’m picking folk I’ve heard being boo’d recently)

…and even if I liked them as individual sportsmen (which I do for various reasons) I certainly wouldn’t by default want them to beat everyone else simply because they have the same flag (putting indy views aside for one minute)

I think it’s the tribal attitude I’m not really getting to the same extent as in things like football)… in fact, as a big F1 fan, to use the max v Lewis scenario - it actually felt like a bunch of football fans got in on the rivalry and treated it like they were on the terraces and not in a sport where people primarily want to see a good race - kinda regardless of who wins

I wouldn`t say that is an indicator of how strong men`s tennis is. Andy Murray is ranked 113 in the world now and his days of going deep into `slams is long gone. That`s not a criticism its just the reality of age and injuries taking its toll.
In my opinion the fact that for the past fifteen years three players have dominated the game isn`t a sign of strength in the sport but a sign of weakness. Djokovic, Federer and Nadal should have been pushed out of the equation long ago had the next generation been up to the task.

Prior to his injury Murray thrashed Daniel in the Davis Cup 6-1, 6-3, 6-1 in less than 90 minutes. I hope his expectations aren`t too high now, he enjoys his tennis and isn`t causing any long term damage.

You can have strength-in-depth without every player being a potential Grand Slam winner. It`s always amusing seeing fans passing judgement on players who, as evidenced by their record of achievement over a long period of time, have a completely different mindset from the average punter. No one will know better than Andy Murray what is a realistic target in his last few years competing at the top level.

I feel for Emma Raducanu who will soon take over the mantle of expectation the British media and fans love to put on promising sports people. Andy Murray had the resilience and character to deal with it; I hope she does too.

The body has to give sometime and several 3+ hours court battles must take its toll over the years .. Its not like a team game where you can maybe hide for a wee bit to try and recover .. Should he decide to retire I wish him all the best and thank him for providing us with great pride while watching him

The fact that Federer, Nadal and Djokovic have 60 grand slams between them isn`t a damning indictment of any batch of `new` players.

It is because they`re the 3 best players of all time, they`ve all been on the scene at roughly the same time and, until recently, have managed to keep free from injury for their entire careers.

Dunno, Djokovic must be riddled with injuries since he has always gone down with one when he is losing or in trouble in a match 🤔

I thought I`d resurrect this thread from a year ago after Andy`s two unbelievable wins in this year`s Australian Open. It`s absolute madness that players are asked to play until 4 am and the winner is expected to play again in less than 48 hours. Goodness knows what condition Andy will be in on Saturday.

In a way he was the victim of his own reputation. The organisers obviously want to feature a big name in the last match of the day but, if it`s a long one, the winner is inevitably scheduled for a late start in the next round to help his recovery. When they`re finishing at 4 am though it must mess with sleep patterns and the biological clock.

Now he`s in the final of the Qatar Open. As usual Andy did it the hard way, winning the first set 6-0, losing the second then winning the third set on a tie break after saving five match points.

Tsitsipas has a doubles match scheduled for tomorrow which may affect the timing of the resumption of the singles match.

Top 40 in the world and won 2 tournaments in the last month. He said he was the fittest he`s been since 2016 and he looked it too.Tsitsipas is number 5 in the world so there was no disgrace in losing a tight match that only had 2 breaks of serve in 5 sets.Nobody would begrudge him if he wants to retire but if he wants it I see no reason why he couldn`t come back as a seed next year.
It sounded like Claire Balding wanted to retire him too, he`s earned the right to go out when he wants to.He is a week older than Djokovic.

I think it`s a tremendous indicator of his character that he is willing to carry on competing even though it`s very unlikely he will ever go deep into a Slam again. When he was rising to the top of the game there would have been many a hardened warrior veteran that would have been dispatched by a fitter, better, Murray. Now it`s went full circle, all glory is fleeting and he is going to pay his dues back to the game. Kind of inspiring really.

I don`t think us lesser mortals will ever fully understand the dedication .. practice ..wear and tear on the body .. mental strength .. injury and pain barrier that these top tennis players go through .. or indeed any top athlete .. Andy always seemed to make it difficult .. No doubting his ability or mental approach but over the years he has had some very long hard slogs and injury`s .. Credit to him .. I hope he keeps going .. his body will tell him

Great post, BPP, but I can`t agree with your last sentence. If he keeps going, he could end up almost a cripple. He`s had an excellent career, has nothing to prove to anyone and doesn`t need the money. For these reasons, I think he should retire from top level tennis. He could still have the odd knockabout if he gets withdrawal symptoms. 🙂

I think it`s the competition against top-level opponents that he craves so a knock-about with friends or family isn`t going to satisfy that but as he gets older the harder it will be to emulate the standards of the best players. I hope he has been taking medical advice on the long-term effects of continuing to play at the highest level.

I think it`s the competition against top-level opponents that he craves so a knock-about with friends or family isn`t going to satisfy that but as he gets older the harder it will be to emulate the standards of the best players. I hope he has been taking medical advice on the long-term effects of continuing to play at the highest level.

I get that, wee eck, but he needs to be sensible about it. If he doesn`t seek medical advice, in case he hears something he doesn`t want to hear, that would be foolish in the extreme.

Not your average Sunday League player.

Who thought we`d be re-opening this thread a year after the last post? Dan Evans is an excellent partner for Andy as he has that same never-say-die attitude and has had to overcome a few setbacks in his career. The two tie-breaks tonight were unbelievable.

Thoroughly enjoyed the game last night. Thought it was done and dusted, then they did a Lazarus.

Well done!

Watching tennis will never be the same again, at least for us Scots.

We can still follow Duncan Scott though! About to go in 200m individual medley semi-final.

Feel lucky to have been able to watch Andy in his prime over the last 20 years. Some of my favourite sporting moments in my lifetime have been with this guy. He`s an absolute legend. Enjoy your retirement Sir Andy!
