Started his career with Shrewsbury before returning home too Brechin City. He played 41 games for them, before he was spotted and snapped up by Willie Miller at Aberdeen when he was only 18. He was a tipped hotshot at Pittodrie, and after 15 appearances for them and one goal against Falkirk he decided to move on.

He moved onto the wee team in 1996 where he played for 3 seasons, making 56 appearances and scoring 4 goals. He signed on for the Pars in the summer of 1998 by Bert Paton on a free transfer, and made his debut away to Celtic where the pars were soundly beaten 5-0. Has now made over 100 appearances for the Pars, despite injury problems over the past few seasons.

A utility player, playing the best football of his career under Jimmy Calderwood, after starting his career as a striker, but now plays for the Pars in defence, Nipper as he is called was also named club captain in 2002/3.
