"Nick" as he likes to be called, joined Dunfermline from the Hearts Boys club and made his debut in a late subsitutes appearance against Hearts. He also became the Pars youngest ever player to start an SPL game at 17 years, 5 months and 28 days old in an away game against falkirk. In March 2008 Phinn signed a contract extension to keep him with the club untill 2010.
