I see Falkirk have begun their summer deals by agreeing on a 1 year contract for Michael McKenna of Arbroath.

Bit out of left field.

He`s been part time pretty much his whole career, 33 year old now, runs his own business and just off the back of a bad injury.

Good player though no doubt about that.

Quite the list! Maybe going with the Dundee method of signing about 15 players for the premier league. Probably wise given their squad is largely the one that took them down.

I`d take Glass and Chalmers, we need creativity.

Logan Chalmers has always looked dangerous playing for Ayr against us and he crashed a shot against the bar from outside the box on Friday night which beat Mehmet by its sheer power.

Mcmann if edwards leaves and chalmers improves team/squad. Other young players worth a look.
Would also take Hanlon at Hibs, suspect Stevenson will end up at Raith.

Whilst researching Gavin Reilly`s career I got sidetracked into looking at Alex Jakubiak`s and was surprised to find he won two caps for Scotland at under 19 level. Although born in England he qualified for Scotland and also Poland through his ancestry.

Gavin Reilly has gone part-time and taken up an apprenticeship outside football.

Dobbie was top goalscorer. Reilly wasn`t even St Mirren`s top scorer, it was Lewis Morgan, who was also player of the year 😉

Last night I noticed the way James McPake talked about him a couple of times. I actually thought at the time "we`re signing him" as he was quite gushing with praise for him. He`s obviously an admirer

He`s fast, direct, strong, and skillful. I`d rather have him in my team than have to deal with him. He`s probably better than KRH atm. Bearing in mind on Friday night he was up against Edwards I thought both players gave a good account of themselves.

My opinion might be tainted by the hairband/rolled down socks look....like an Aldi version of Grealish 😃

I`m respecting your opinion. But I believe every club will be asking his agent if he would be interested, I`d be very disappointed if we haven`t made enquiries.

He will make any team in the league stronger and we are no different.

The problem with this transfer window is - do you stick or twist? The Premiership clubs are still playing but they`ll be shedding loads of players in the next few weeks, many of whom may have to drop down a level. You could dive in now and then find out later somebody better is available.

Partick are rumoured to be interested in George Oakley of Morton as well as Robbie Crawford. With Robbie Muirhead already bound for Livi that could seriously weaken Morton`s squad.

Oakley is out of contract so he`ll be in demand. Maybe we`ll have a look?

Partick may fancy a backup / alternative to Brian Graham.

Morton would want to keep him.

ICT are good at the back but don`t score enough goals.

Falkirk might be keen for an upgrade on MacIver.

Raith may think he`ll provide a better return than Hamilton.

If it was purely about football and where he thinks he`d score the most goals then Patrick or Falkirk would be my guess, both seem to get good service into a central forward.

What more do you want/expect? I personally think the last summer window was great seeing what Otoo and Fisher can become. And the winter window MFW and Kane came in and did the job they were signed for,

I`d be over the moon if we permanently signed another two players this summer with the potential of Fisher and Otoo.

That`s without mentioning KRH.

I hope this rumour is not true.

Kane is a pretty decent Championship level player, but his injury record is terrible and he’s not getting any younger.

After the season we’ve just had with injuries, McPake should be reshaping the squad profile to lessen the chances of a repeat next season, not permanently signing Chris Kane.

Kane would be an excellent addition to the squad on a full time basis. If our summer window comprised of Kane and MFW and the rest being loans I would class that as an excellent window.

Given the impact he made, I`d be more than happy for Kane to sign.
If MFW were to sign I`d be delighted. He looks a real prospect. Can`t see him playing at our level though unless he really values playing every week.

No way MFW signs permanently, the manager said at the supporters meeting that Aberdeen were watching him at every home game. He`ll be playing at a higher level than the Scottish championship next season.

Kane would be a great addition, providing that the medical data suggests that he can play 25+ games a season - based on his current circumstances. We would have been relegated without him.

I like MFW, but I am not seeing exactly what some others are. I would sign him but have not seen much evidence that he would stroll through a season in the Scottish Championship, that we`d be lucky to have him or that he would be playing at a level below his current abilities.

I`ve seen it suggested that he`s been miles better than anyone else on the park in some games - and I wouldn`t even have had him as man of the match on those occasions. He could well train on though and seems to fit our model.

Chris Kane would be a good signing. If we do sign him, I`d like to see us play to his strengths and play with two wingers ( and I don`t mean inverted ones either )
Let KRH play on the right and let`s sign a left footed winger and play him on the left

I actually thought McCann played well when out on the left and I like the sound of your idea. Unfortunately mcpake seems adamant to play with 3 centre backs ruling out wingers who aren`t wing backs.

It’s been some time since McCann played well in any position. If Kane signs I can’t see jak or McCann either staying or getting much gametime at all next season.

This is a good signing, just have to hope he stays fit.

Now to get some players in to supply him.

Shaun Byrne not offered a new deal at Dundee. Surprised its been announced now given he`s still got games to play at Rovers.

He`d be an improvement on Allan/Chalmers and a good player to have in the squad fighting against Hamilton / Otoo.

More likely to stay at Rovers though.

I`d prefer to keep Allan than Chalmers, but given we`re lumbered with Joe for another year then we need to let Allan go.

Can`t have both of them in the squad if we want to get into the promotion playoffs IMO.

They need to announce quickly if leaks are starting to come out otherwise not going to look great on the club.

On Allan, if he has gone, wish him all the very best but for DAFC it’s definitely the correct move. If we’re serious about making a good go of it next season, we need to free up some resources and bring in better.

News on contracts was meant to come out the week after the supporters meeting……so last week…….fair play if the club are still waiting etc, but communication again seems to be an issue.

I think a move for Paul Allan would be good for him too. He is a good player, if we had the resources he would be a good squad player in this league. 67 games, 2 goals, 7 assists in his time here. It can`t be easy for him only getting minutes here and there and the occasional start. Can`t really say anything bad about him on the hard work he put in here, or his attitude. He has reached the age where he needs to be playing regularly now. Maybe a move to somewhere like Kelty or East Fife would do him the world of good. Sometimes a step back to take a step forward

I like Paul Allan. Agree he needs to be playing week in week out. I think that he will improve with regular game time. He is no better or worse than anyone we have now so it depends on how he could improve next season and contribute in our push for the playoffs if he were to stay.

I think if anything we need to bring in another experienced pro in the middle of the park so that we have a thread of experience in all areas. The younger players need that support around them, particularly when we are up against it. I don`t look at fine margins in terms of points differential at the end of the season, more game by game, where results could have gone either way. We need a core of strength through the team to ensure we do not loose cheap goals. If we continue that next season we could easily be in trouble

Chalmers is the luckiest football at the club, that’s twice now better players have had to be let go to leave as he’s been the one under contract…

Allan was okay, but like McCann, he came through at the club so supporters gave him less slack but has been found wanting at this level, would be a good option for a club with ambitions of making the championship next season tho, ie a Kelty or even arbroath.

Back to being drenched in my own negativity….

When was the first time? Genuine question. When we went down, everyone out of contract was released. But he was also a very good option for league 1, as we found out. I’m also not convinced at all that Reece Cole or Graham Dorrans were better?

Then I don’t think we released any midfielders last summer, did we? He also earned himself a new contract with his performances last season anyway, which is hardly ‘lucky’.

Also, is Paul Allan really a better option? I don’t think either player is what we need to challenge in the top half of the championship. If they were both out of contract, I think both would be released. So I’d argue Chalmers’ contract situation isn’t the reason Paul Allan’s been released, as you’re claiming.

If Paul Allan has been released, I hope he kicks on in his career and goes on to fulfil the potential he had when he was younger.

Last season, we won the league with 5/6 games to spare. We had plenty of time to start negotiations and planning for the following season and I think we announced plenty of extensions between then and the end of the season.

This year, we didn’t know what league we’d be in until there was 1 game left, there’s a bit of a difference.

I think the one decision that has been made is the loan players returning to their parent clubs. I am sure players will be on holiday and as has been said on here we were not sure what league we would be in so doubt any negotiations have taken place. The fact tgat no announcement has been made suggests we are in negotiation with players, they are on holiday or we are carefully reviewing our options. Glad to see no panic decision making. The Livi situation perhaps tells you something with respect to their wage bill. It looks like they will have a bit of a rebuilding exercise to do with the number of players released, up for sale, or with release clauses.

Can see us regretting letting Paul Allan go. We’ve been lacking a decent crosser all season. He was excellent at set pieces.

You`ll struggle to get better players than paul and Alex for free in the championship, I`m disappointed for both of them but I`m sure they will pick up clubs of a similar level by next week.

As others have said I appreciate Allans efforts in his time here.

Think at his age he needs to go somewhere that he`ll play every week. His delivery from set pieces is excellent and wouldn`t be surprised to see him be picked up by a decent side.

We need to prioritise the areas we need to strengthen right now though so there will be casualties.

That`s three first-team players Morton have lost to rival clubs - Muirhead, Crawford and Oakley - and hasn`t Strapp left too?

Wee eck - Strapps out of contact and been offered a new contract but hasn’t signed yet. Possible waiting to see who else offers him a deal. I’d imagine we’d be monitoring the situation as a replacement for Edwards.

Cheers, AA. I read somewhere that Morton`s budget is out-of-line with most in the Championship and that their board had given it a boost but it doesn`t seem to have stopped the exodus. It must be sickening for Dougie Imrie but he`s a shrewd operator. It`ll be interesting to see how he fills the gaps.

If we had played 2 up front last year (regardless of the personnel) we would have far more goals than what we ended up with that`s for sure.

Granted you need the strength in the midfield to allow the 2 up front however keeping teams on the back foot and playing with 2 wingers feeding a front 2 makes life torrid for the defending team.

Our players are more than good enough to do this if set up accordingly

Not sure how you come to that conclusion. For one thing, it would been the same strikers who weren`t exactly setting games alight. It would also had left us very light in midfield meaning we`d have less of the ball and therefore creating less. A 4-2-3-1 is no less an attacking formation as a 3-5-2 or a 4-4-2, and simply saying that two up front equals more goals flies in the face of pretty much every league and team around the world.

Ill attempt to give my reasoned thoughts. When playing with one striker they need to be good enough in many aspects of the game to be able to do it on their own. None of our forwards have all the attributes to be able to do it (until Kane arrived where he is faster, stronger, better touch, better link up play etc than the other strikers on our books)

Wighton has a proven record of being a goal scorer. When he was asked to play up front on his own, he wasn`t able to have the same impact on games as when playing alongside someone be it that other player holding up play, generating space, flick on etc.

Mccann is a workhorse but not a natural striker. He has shown he doesn`t have the attributes to play up on his own but what he does have is movement, guile and great strength.

The year we were promoted, many games we started with one up top and changed at half time to play 2 up. Eventually later in the season we started to play more with 2 up front.

I wouldn’t trust Nouble week on week to turn up. When Martindale desperately needed him to perform this year he was more often than not disinterested/ineffectual. Hasn’t been the same player since his rumoured big move to either Hearts or Hibs this time last year didn’t materialise.

Let him be someone else’s expensive flop.

It seems that it`s his decision. Isn`t he Rhys McCabe`s cousin? This is from the club website:-

May 26, 2024
Defender Fordyce moves on
Player/assistant-manager Callum Fordyce has chosen to call time on a successful five-year spell with Airdrieonians, and will move on this summer having left a huge mark during his time with the Diamonds.

Initially signed in May 2019, Callum brought his considerable experience to the backline and made an immediate impression on the Diamonds support, winning the Player of the Year award in each of his first two seasons.

Callum’s influence on the pitch was plain to see, and a spell as club captain followed before moving into the player/assistant-manager role in May 2022.

Consistently solid at the back, Callum leaves us having been inducted into the Airdrieonians Hall of Fame in his final season at the club, and we thank him for his considerable contribution and wish him all the very best with his next move.

Yes, Fordyce and McCabe are cousins, eck.

I`ve always felt that Fordyce was very unlucky to be released by the Pars. He was a good player when he signed from Livi and was immediately installed as team captain by AJ. He then suffered that horrible injury against Ayr. It was described as accidental, but Callum felt it was reckless, and I thought so too at the time. He was then rushed back for a game at Easter Road, where he was arguably MOM, but made the mistake which led to Hibs winner. In the next game, at home to St Mirren, he made two mistakes from which the visitors scored and he was hooked at halftime. Fortunately, the Pars were able to come back to win an exciting game 4-3. He was never quite the same player after that, no doubt because it takes time to recover, both physically and psychologically, after such a long layoff.

There`s a lot of speculation on the Airdrie thread on Pie and Bovril that Fordyce and McCabe have fallen out but that`s all it is - speculation, nothing definite. There`s also a feeling he`s on his way to the Rovers because of the Ian Murray connection.

Shaun Byrne is a man in demand after Raith Rovers` failure to win promotion via the playoffs.

The Dundee midfielder is out of contract this summer and won`t be offered a new deal by the Dark Blues.

Raith are keen to land him permanently, but face competition from Fife rivals Dunfermline.

Partick Thistle, former club Livingston and Northern Irish Champions Larne are also in the mix, according to the Courier.

Daily Record:

Stuart McKinstry has been offered the chance to extend his Queen’s Park stay by another two years.

The former Leeds kid joined the Spiders last October and impressed enough in his 21 appearances for the Championship outfit for boss Callum Davidson to slap a new extension down on the table.

However, the Queen’s boss faces a nervous wait, with the 21-year-old also attracting rival interest from Partick Thistle, Dunfermline and English League One side Carlisle.

Scotland youth internationalist McKinstry was released by Leeds last summer having spent the previous campaign on loan at former club Motherwell.

They have, but he doesn`t play for the 1st team, he`s in their youth/reserves. Not sure of his contract status, but could be potentially a loan.

2+2=5 of course, but maybe Ian Murray is about to leave Rovers and Rhys McCabe is being lined up to take over? Would maybe explain Fordyce not wanting to be tied to a new deal at Airdrie. He could now do the player/assistant role at Rovers.

How many coaches do Raith need?

Looking at their bench on TV last couple of games, never saw Potter, Cameron was there plus someone on Murray`s shoulder that I didn`t recognise.

John Potter isn’t strictly a coach, but a Technical Director working on implementing their long term strategic objectives and overseeing their football operations.

Im not sure of the legalities of that…..feels a bit like the football version of insider trading if that happened 😂 imagine he moved and McCabe decided to stay! Or Murray didnt leave 😂

I really rate Byrne but with Hamilton, Chalmers and Otoo on the books who can play that role, we’re well covered in that position.

Have to agree with Alter Ego. If we are serious about achieving a Play-Off spot or going for automatic promotion we need better players than Joe Chalmers. He sat on the bench the last few weeks and never got a sniff, all the while when Allan was fit he was chosen ahead of Joe.

I think we go at the moment with O’too and Hamilton the midfield paring but really think we need another couple of central midfielders amongst other areas which need addressed.

Byrne would have been an upgrade on Chalmers as would Alston who has been mentioned. Alston with his experience would slot into that midfield area as a valuable squad member.

I’m pretty sure a few of these guys including chalmers would be free to leave if they wanted to.

We let go of all out of contract players which suggests more would have gone if they were not out of contract.

We just have to hope a few of them fancy playing so move on.

Too old too slow, they can carry on signing players like that. great news for the rest of the league. They can crack on with the slowest defence in the division they’ll sink like stone.

I was thinking Raith might not have a pot to p1ss in after having such a large squad this season. It felt like it might be promotion or bust for them.

It`s looking like they still have money for signings though, Lewis Stevenson wouldn`t come cheap. I`m glad they`ve got him and we didn`t pay what will be big wages for a player of his advanced years. They seem to have the total opposite signing strategy to us, going for 30 year old experienced players that are at their peak with no real sell on value, while we are going for up and coming players. I know what I prefer, although a few experienced heads would help.

I note that they have more than doubled their average crowd to around 4,180, which isn`t bad compared to sub 2,000 crowd the year before. Our average of 5,444 is also up, best average crowd since 2005. Good to see that even with them having a great season and us struggling we are still by far the big team in Fife

They have a fairly structured wage policy where most of the players are on the same salary, only difference will be bonuses

Unfortunately we have at least 4 players on a higher wage than any of the Raith squad....

You wouldn`t have signed Brewster then? Brian Graham just won player of the year at 36 and Stephen Dobbie and Charlie Adam have also won it in recent times at that age.Luca Modric will probably play in the Champions League final this weekend and he is going on 39.

Raith seem to have it more right on and off the park than we do at the moment. People would be surprised to know they don’t have as big a budget as us even last season. Stevenson will do a job for them but not sure he will last two years. As for Chalmers we should be offloading him if we want to improve

How would "offloading Chalmers" help us improve, Gus? And why would he agree to go elsewhere when he has a contract with the Pars and is highly regarded by the management team and his teammates for his contribution both on and off the pitch. He`s a model pro, trains well, helps the younger players and contributes to the harmony and camaraderie of the playing squad.

Still think we`d be better to get rid of him?

Yes. He`s not good enough if promotion is our aim.

The rest is commendable but it`s on pitch contribution that matters when budgets are tight.

So many posts seem, one way or another, to get round to a discussion of Joe Chalmers. He just isn`t the liability on the park that some suggest he is. He may lack some qualities that others have but he patently possesses qualities that no-one else has. If he works on some of the qualities he lacks, he can still be an excellent player for us. Everyone has a dip in form at some stage of the season and Joe is no exception. If we have more of a spark up front, taking the weight off the midfield and defence I`m sure Joe will flourish. He deserves that chance.

The best anyone can do is have an educated guess at budget/spend. There could be a difference there between the teams but really who knows.

What I would say about Rovers is that the accessibility of funds (either in the bank of fed in ad-hoc by their wealthy fan investors) appears different between the teams. When Raith need someone they seem to move far more quickly than we do.

The thing about money and investors is they`re happy to chuck it about when the sun is shining but quickly close up shop when the rain starts and the reality hits that there is no money to be made in Scottish football unless you`re in it for the long run.

`Lost a fortune`? We`ll have to wait and see the results for the current year, which ends today.

Obsessing over a rival is the very definition of a `wee team` in my book. Let them get on with it and see where it takes them. They`ve made mistakes, just like us. Imagine if we`d signed Zak Rudden instead of Chris Kane.

Hamilton and Falkirk are better than what went down so we will need to improve the team to make sure we keep up.

I think we have the core of the squad so agree I think we will only bring in 2-3 players at most. I think this is a big season for McCann. He is still raw but has the physical strength needed for this league. I see Craig Chalmers as an integral part of the squad too. We lacked movement up front last season so never got the best from him. We have options at the back even if Edwards moves on so I don`t see too many problems there. I think one in midfield and another full back are the more pressing needs. Maybe one or two loan players to make up the squad would be all I would expect.

Can we take the sting out of this please.

Anyone who knows Buffy will be aware it was tongue in cheek and no ill intent at all.

That doesn’t make it right before people jump the gun and folk are quite right to disagree and challenge where they see fit for any wrongdoing but please don’t turn this into a mob mentality and using phrases ‘absolutely disgusting’ ‘absolute clowns’ ‘outrageous’ ‘feeling a bit sick’.

Please be more constructive and a little more considerate in responses as I’m very worried that Buffy will be reading those posts above and will be becoming very overwhelmed and lonely for what was intended to be a harmless (albeit ill judged) light hearted comment to Jake. That isn’t right either.

Admin - would be good if you can just close this thread and enable a new one to be started in its place.

Absolutely spot on Berry. A totally embarrassing over reaction by some.

It`s the over reaction though isn`t it? Had someone said something about physically admiring a female player and then someone posted about how they were clutching their pearls and `feeling a bit sick tbh` because of said comment I`d also feel that would also be over the top as well

And although my eyes were open
They just might as well be closed

Nope I don’t accept this at all. If a man said this everyone would be up in arms, why is it acceptable because a woman said this. Absolutely outrageous and it’s clearly double standards, anyone who doesn’t think so is clearly a clown and can message me privately so I can tell them how much of an absolute clown they are.

Since I failed to convince you with my reply to your post, I`ll add the bleedingly obvious comment that "offloading" Chalmers would only improve the playing side of the squad if we were able to bring in a significantly better player who was unlikely to disrupt the current harmony of the dressing room,

Ask yourself. Is such a player readily available? Can we meet his wage demands? Is he willing to join the Pars? Is he under contract with another club and are they prepared to release him? Does another club want Chalmers and and are they willing to at least match his Pars wages?

Not as straightforward as you seem to think, is it?

What a condescending reply.

I think everyone understands how a transfer window works mate. That doesn`t change the fact that, IMO, Chalmers isn`t going to take us to the next level.

Apologies, DBA. My post does have a condescending tone when I read it back. It was certainly not my intention. I just find some comments `re Chalmers frustrating. Absolutely nobody has suggested he will "take us to the next level."

The manager and CEO believed Chalmers was worth an extended contract, whether we agree or not. He accepted it. What makes folk think he can just be "offloaded" just because they don`t rate him? Should he be actively looking for another club, in your opinion?

"Really? It was embarrassing. Obviously folk like you and all the Raith fans must be easy pleased."

Embarrassing? Not a fan of Bryan`s Gunn then? I enjoy his output I have to say, and with 120k followers on Twitter and mentions on Football Clichés, Guardian Football Weekly and the Totally Football Show, it seems I`m not alone. It`s OK to admit you have no sense of humour or are an old man shouting at clouds you know? You don`t have to label things you don`t understand as "embarrassing".

If that was said about a women’s team it would be viewed as sexist and disgraceful and rightly so. No excuse just because it’s about men. Absolutely disgraceful and anyone who thinks otherwise is an absolute clown.

Myles Hippolyte signs for AFC Wimbledon. Still only 29, for some reason I was expecting him to be older than that.

So sexualising men is just ‘banter’, but I wonder what the reaction would be if it was said about a woman. Absolutely disgusting and unacceptable. Yet it’ll be brushed under the carpet. Admin should be stepping in and barring Buffy from using this site, otherwise it appears they condone this behaviour.
