It`s sad,as Stephen`s has been involved with the Pars a long time ,but unfortunatly they have let their standards drop

It`s time for them to up their quality or move on ,

I would like to see Gregg`s as they have a bigger selection

There’s no way you are complaining about quality and suggesting that Gregg’s is a better alternative.

Baynes need to step up and get in there…..much better quality than both the “big names” and fresh made every day! Plus a discount would be nice!

Anything would be better than Stephens. Dropped from best by far to worst by far in only a few years. I don`t know how long our contract with them is, but they could do with an awakening. Lived off their reputation far too long.

I`d like to think it`s one of many revenue streams the club will be reviewing at the end of the season.
You only have to look across at the wee team to see what a massive increase they`ve had since changing supplier to in house.

Stephens steak and haggis pies are excellent. They also do an excellent cheese and broccoli pie for the vegetarians.
Their fudge donuts and millionaire shortbread are up there, too, but none of that is available at EEP.

I am particularly surprised they have not been told to supply the vegetarian option. I prefer them to the current mince pies or steak bridies.

I agree. Think the best course of action is to take the match day catering in-house and aim to have the best match day food in the country. Loaded fries etc.....

I know from work colleagues etc that Stephens bridies are a big factor in deciding to buy an away ticket for EEP. There is no reason why we couldn`t bring the catering in-house and order bridies and pies from Stephens.

Further, if we were ordering a product it would be up to the club to complain about quality and I would hope we would not be subjected to the smaller/inferior bridie you get at the stadium compared to Stephens outlets.

D.A are the number one!

Is it publicly known how long the contract is with Stephens? As others have said it`s a shame as they were always well regarded in Scottish football, but the drop off in quality has been unacceptable.

I was told the bridies they supply to East End aren`t even made in Rosyth but brought in from their sister bakery in Glasgow.

No idea if that`s true or not but would explain the clear drop in quality between shop bought and the poor efforts we pay far more for on match day.

Really disappointing half @rsed effort from Stephens overall and has been for some time.

I had a Bridie yesterday as I always do and I`ve got to say they are and have been for months very poor about the thickness of a £5 note and basically just all pastry.

Baynes would be a great shout. As long as we do t go back to doing it ourselves that was a shambles.

Stephens has some great options in there shops

In fact even if you eat meat, hotdogs for example are processed meat, which are among the least healthy foods you can eat!

I don`t believe they have access "tap" water in the stands, so it will likely be bottled water they are putting in the cups and selling

People suggesting to bring the catering in house must have short memories.
The service was as slow as a week in jail, took the whole of half time to serve about 10 people. Folk still queuing 10-15 minutes into the second half.
Please never go back to that.

What we want is to maximise profit made from such opportunities whilst giving fans tasty scram.

If Stephens aren`t doing it, I`d rather put the opportunity out there for a new vendor rather than in house. In house surely has too many extra costs attached to bother. Infact what club our size would do it themselves???

By putting it out the club are guaranteed an annual/monthly fee regardless of how many pies are sold. Selling drinks is easy enough but even with Buffy working overtime I doubt we`d be able to produce enough cakes and biscuits in house. I`d hope that crap catering wouldn`t put fans off but I know the younger fans may be more enticed to attend if promised a nice cake or hotdog.

What concerns me more than anything is the hygiene issues in the Stephen’s concessions. I used to use the north stand east till I saw hot water being brought in in a plastic basin poured into the water urn and used straight away for hot drinks, which needless to say were lukewarm. The cold drinks are sold out of unbranded plastic bottles having apparently been refilled off site somewhere. Nothing comes from proper dispensers like in every other ground I’ve been to, even in the highland or lowland leagues.

Its like a convenience tbh - buy stuff at the ground because going there and normally hungry on arrival due to commitments outside of the football. Always buy food pre match too so normally plenty food and warm. But the quality is so poor.

Can the club not look into other businesses for this or survey the fans? I wasnt keen on the in house food idea, and burgers/chips etc would be good if reasonably priced (unlike Hampden where its extortionate!)

I still reckon Baynes would do a better job and deliveries would be made day of game from local bakery.

^^ Not a bad idea Jake89
That way you are breeding competition, keeping prices competitive and hopefully improving quality and service.

May even attract extra advertising to the club that we can sell to the new concessions.

Discussions need to be had with Stephens but we need to be careful not to shoot ourselves in the foot and lose their advertising as well as concessions

Got to admit, the last few times I went to Stephens at the match it`s been a disappointment. Had a pie that was so burnt it was pretty much inedible, another that was soggy and had scolding hot fat running out of it, being given something different to what I asked for. Last time I had something was at the start of the season, a bridie with what was like a thin spreading of filling inside. Since then I`ve not bothered.

I used to spend about a fiver at the food kiosk, also buy a couple of tickets for the 50/50. Since that stopped being offered at the match I`ve not bothered with it. Programme quality has slipped too, so I`ve given up on that as well. I would say I spend about a tenner less on these things at the ground than I used to, which I wouldn`t grudge if the quality was good.
I would prefer to give money to the club, but I`m not a mug, I`m not going to give up hard earned money for a substandard product. If others are like me, the club should take note

While I don’t think there’s a great deal wrong with Stephen’s, other clubs seem to have moved forward in providing fans with more variety in recent years.
I get that Stephen’s can only provide what their owner can but even things like filled rolls should be on sale and Lentil soup like their shops provide.

They do sell lentil soup - and very nice it is too - but if you don`t get in quick (i.e. Well before kick off) it`s usually sold out. Filled rolls should be something they could manage though - all it needs is a water bath or something to keep the sausages and bacon warm like they have in the shops (and what Greggs have) or they can go in the big oven things wrapped in foil.

The hot dogs etc in Charlie D and legends didn’t last long, as they weren’t making money on them.

Stephen’s has went downhill, £2 for a small iron bru which is pre-filled
From a large Aldi bottle lol!

Tv in the food areas would be good. Watch the match while you queue. Folk would spread out a bit, making it easier to get served. Diddly write that well but sure you know what I mean.

People suggesting to bring the catering in house must have short memories.
The service was as slow as a week in jail, took the whole of half time to serve about 10 people. Folk still queuing 10-15 minutes into the second half.
Please never go back to that.

Why would you think inhouse catering now would be the same as it was back then?

Why do you think it would be different?
Stephens for all their faults are a professional catering company. The people we got in last time we run it in house were utterly clueless.

Get it in house. Big supply of chips, vat of curry sauce and a vat of gravy. £2 a serving and club would be raking it in. Hot dogs, various pies. Anything`s better than Stephens offerings at EEP currently

Van idea sounds good from a customer prospective, but if I had a van at one part of the stadium, would I make enough in such a short time to cover my costs and rental fees,
There would need to be several vans and I don`t think there would be enough to share the profits.

The new “fan zone” at Carlisle United has been a big success (unlike the team, sadly). It’s set up outside the main stand on the club’s land. There’s a licenced bar, a chip van, a burger/Cumberland sausage van, an ice cream van and various others, canvas awnings for rainy days and a giant screen showing the early game in the EPL. It opens at 12.30 on match days and there’s always at least a couple of hundred folk in there by half two, spending money.

You keep going on about past events. I’m fairly sure the club has moved on since then in lots of ways but why you think in-house catering would remain the same is anyone’s guess.

Fair question. It would likely need supported as part of a bit of a fan zone area whereby people are encouraged to turn up earlier, get some lunch or stay longer after the game. Something that could turn into a bit of a routine like the old getting some chips on the way home after a game. I`ve no idea on the margins on these vans though. I assume they have their own food licences so that would be fine provided they were on club owned land rather than a council road or pavement.

I was in the rugby club next door and wandered up the lane which brings you our right at this and even on a chilly Feb afternoon it was really busy. looked like a bit of a "tuck shop" set up with stall set up with bottles of pop etc for kids but then as you say food vans/bars/Big screen showing the lunchtime KO. Not sure we have somewhere at EEP to set up such a facility.

That`s a great asset but could be extended so it also covers good and drink. Though perhaps not as the current fan zone is very focussed on families and younger kids.

Quite a few incorrect assumptions/statements made here.

Firstly, it`s bottled water in cups, they can`t pour from the taps in the stand, and they aren`t allowed to serve bottles under the stadium rules.

The club provides estimates of crowd size and they order accordingly, usually with a bit of extra on top. This is based on previous crowds against those teams with estimates based on things like league position, whether it`s a midweek game etc

They aren`t going to bring way more because as soon as it goes in the oven, it can`t be resold and will go to waste if not sold on the day. If you want a pie, don`t come after half time, this has been the case in all the 40-odd years I`ve been going to football.

The reason some stands have not had enough pies on occasion, like the kiosk in the main stand for example, is because changes have been made as to which stands are opened that is different to what was planned for, on the day of the match, by which time it`s too late to order more and it`s a case of spreading around what was ordered. Totally outwith the control of Stephens.

The pies sold at east end are made in Rosyth. Fresh, the night before.

The ovens at East End are ancient and as such, they are put on at 1030 and take a while to get to temperature on a match day, and replenished as often as possible, but the more they sell, and the closer to the match they go in, the less chance they have of being hot. Stephens have no control over this whatsoever, but it has been a brought up with the club.

Lastly, some folk really need to realise none of the complaints mentioned here are the fault of any the kids working behind the kiosks, so please bear that in mind before you go radge at a teenager, which is a common occurrence.

There are more things I could answer that are incorrect but they`re not for me to say or share publicly, I don`t think I`ve betrayed any confidences in sharing what I have.

Before anyone asks, no I don`t work for Stephens, no I have no influence over any of the above, and therefore can`t fix any of them.

There is an email address you can send concerns to and every one of them is looked into and answered, but no I`ve no idea what it is. Any correspondence sent to the club is forwarded on and dealt with in the same way.

Cheers for the info Digs. One thing of note which might have bright this to the fore was that on Saturday in the Norrie, on the stroke of half time, there were no pies, steak bridies or sausage rolls left/available.

I think the football experience in Scotland is a wee bit backwards compared to other parts of the UK and we all know the main reason why.

We are lucky that we do have Charlie d`s and legends but it would be good to be able to buy a pint in the undercroft of the norrie and get a decent bit of scran.

Off on a tangent but i remember about midway through the 2nd half mark you always saw a young lad or lassie walking along the sidelines from the NW and disappearing into the changing room area with a massive plastic baker`s tray filled to the gunnels with steak bridies and other treats.

Digs, you wrote a page long post correcting people. What’s the point of people trying to have a discussion on a topic if you’re just here to point out their errors.

Look at the length of your post, and the part at the end when you said “there’s more to be corrected”.

I don’t understand why you felt the need to come on to this forum and write all that. I found it patronising.

So let me get this straight, a discussion can only exist if it contains only conjecture and misinformation? Facts aren’t allowed? Whether you think they are facts or not, is neither here nor there.

What has the length of my post got to do with it? I didn’t realise there was a limit on post length. I also gave a reason why I wouldn’t correct other stuff, it’s not arrogant or patronizing to post an opposing position debunking something that isn’t true.. You can say what you like about it being patronizing, it’s not, and you feeling that way is a you problem. It’s none of my business.

You’re speaking as if I’m not allowed to post here because I admin another forum. I still read this forum, I just don’t post often, I’ve been reading and posting on here for nearly 25 years, longer than you actually, being part of another forum doesn’t preclude me from that.
