A few wee sticky moments in the second half. Chalmers misses an absolute sitter to finish them off but 2 great goals to kill it.

3 points and a clean sheet is good. Great to see Sutherland get a goal. Spartans grew into it 1st half but thought we were in control 2nd half.

Three cracking finishes! Loved Wotherspoon`s faints and dummies, wee passes into space; just what we`ve been missing. Ngwenya`s a unit, maybe not as keen to get forward as Edwards. TS is probably the most natural goalscorer we have; manager says he`ll be going nowhere despite numerous requests from other clubs for him to go out on loan. Kane looked fine for the 45 mins he was on the park.

Bene took ill overnight; Wighton had a knee issue. We got away with the goalie situation; apparently Mehmet wasn`t feeling great before the game! Maybe that`ll persuade them to resolve it by Tuesday. Todd to get an op on Monday.

That`s a solid win given bene dropped out with illness. Backline was a little exposed in the first half but managed to keep a clean sheet. All three goals were well taken and hopefully can do more of that on Tuesday night

Goals usually get posted at midnight, all three were great strikes too! Very impressed by Wotherspoon, not just by his vision and passing ability but got around the park and covered a fair distance throughout the match.

My mate messaged me post game stating it was the same old, uninspiring and he still hates the tactics. Just his opinion of course but he’s been a Pars fan for 30 years so I will take it.

The goals were good, but certainly not “great” strikes. All 3 given too much time and space to get shots off and wont get that much in the Champ. Sutherlands goal looked a good finish for a young, raw striker though.

Clean sheet a bonus and a win on Tues means a big step towards qualifying.

McPake wasn’t too impressed with the performance in his post match interview. Was really happy for Taylor getting his goal.

I see Forfar had a total of 3 subs for their match against Livi.

A 3-0 win, first competitive game of the season against a tricky Spartans team, a good start.

The result isn’t a fair reflection on the game though as Spartans held their own for the majority and had their chances.

First half, McCann scored early and the attack actually stemmed from Hamilton pulling off an important goal bound block, credit to the players and ref who decided to play on whilst Hamilton appeared to have winded himself as it was that phase that McCann scored a great goal on the counter. I agree he had plenty of time and space to take it but still a decent strike and great for confidence.

Rest of the half was pretty poor to be honest, no tempo, Spartans had a fair bit of the ball, hit the post (going by JM interview sounds like Mehmet got a touch on it), they had a call for a penalty for handball which was difficult to see. They had numerous corners as well, a free header but ultimately none of them troubled the keeper. You know it wasn’t great when you’re looking at the clock constantly and relieved when it got to HT unscathed.

Second half was better, we controlled the game and had the majority of the ball, unfortunate not to score through a really decent run from
McCann to tee up Chalmers who ballooned it. I wouldn’t put it in the sitter category as the ball did bounce at his feet a little but there is no doubt he should’ve done better and he knew it as he trundled back to the halfway line.

KRH goal came from a short corner with Wotherspoon, given bags of time to line up the shot and curl it into the net and for those that were in attendance, it was relief that went in as it secured the points really.

I don’t want to hype Taylor too much but when he came on, he has bags of potential, the way he moves, takes the ball, decision making, driving and the way he took his goal was excellent.

MoM for me was Hamilton, predominantly for that first half that kept that clean sheet as he did pull off some last minute blocks. Not too dissimilar to those Bene did against Dundee.

McCann did well, despite folks thoughts on Wotherspoon as he signed, he was really good (that away top he had long sleeved looked awesome!) and others were solid (Comrie in particular).

Ngwenya, it’s clear he is not the same type of player Edwards was, hoping for him to run at players more and make more of an impact, I remain a little reserved on him at the moment.

I gave Chalmers credit for his performance in the St
Mirren game, thought he was slow and really poor at Spartans.

Anyway, good to get 3 points. Livingston won as expected as well and a good few decent sized scores across the competition so getting 3 on GD could also be important.

On to Forfar!

Having seen the highlights I think Mehmet may have touched that cross on to the post. Taylor Sutherland is a natural goalscorer, a guy whose first instinct is to have a shot if the opportunity arises. At his goal he didn`t even take a touch to position the ball which was farther from the goal than he was. He just swivelled and adjusted his body to get his shot away.

Just seen the highlights, that third was instinctive, a great finish.

First two goals the keeper might think he should have done better.

No doubt that Mehmet pulled off a great save. Could easily have been an OG off McCann after it came off post. We got lucky there.

What an opportunity we missed in 2014.

KRH`s goal showed great technique as well. He actually side-footed it and, allowing for the angle, that must have been around 25 yards. Combinations involving him and Wotherspoon could be quite fruitful this season.

There seems to be a fair degree of consensus about this, which I would agree with.

Beforehand, I might have taken any sort of victory in normal time; 3-0 was a little flattering with a couple of late goals adding gloss to the scoreline. However, it maintains the steady but slow improvement we have seen in pre-season. And I’m sure the Spartans will be a little disappointed which may tell us something.

The absence of Bene and WIghton meant the bench looked a little light, but then it always is for these matches before we bolster the squad with some loans. And having no keeper on the bench looks amateurish. Last year we had Collier as backup for the SPFL Trust Trophy; not sure why we couldn’t do the same here.

We had the usual 3 CB and 2 WB set-up, with Comrie and Ngwenya very high up the pitch. I’m not sure who was meant to be supporting McCann who seemed a bit isolated – perhaps KRH although sometimes it was Comrie getting up there.

Otoo and Chalmers offered a contrast in styles – strength and drive on the one hand, passing on the other. Wotherspoon looks classy. Not that we created a great deal. After the good early start, it was pretty even for a while (although you would expect the Spartans to be up for it). We seemed to control the game better later on – just like our division one winning season.

Comrie looked a little uncomfortable at LCB in the second half, but he is a wise enough head to be able to adapt. Maybe Young would have got a chance had we been 2 or 3 up. (This is a side-effect of our style – while we may control games, we are rarely out of sight when we can blood the kids).

As for the goals – well done to the ref for playing on when Hammy went down (he does that a lot, maybe it’s the way he plays) and a superb finish from McCann – his celebrations seemed to say – “how dare you doubt me – could you have done that?”. KRH’s was a good hit, but I felt perhaps a better keeper would have kept it out? Taylor’s goal was class – I think wee eck nailed it – when he gets in the box he is looking to get a shot away and looking to score.

Finally, was that Nipper Thomson I spotted? (Obviously the Tods were there as usual)

3 decent goals, the Sutherland finish the pick of the bunch as he didn’t have time and freedom afforded in the build up in the first 2 goals.

It bodes well and you can only beat what’s in front of you so another comfortable result against Forfar and then we can see how well fair against opposition at our level.

If Todd out the next few months, here’s hoping we can bring in another central midfielder.

we need another central midfielder even if Todd was fit.

"Otoo and Chalmers offered a contrast in styles – strength and drive on the one hand, passing on the other."

its a better balance although usually the main problem with those two together is their reluctance to use their right foot.

"Comrie looked a little uncomfortable at LCB in the second half"

it highlights again the need for a left footed centre half in the squad if Breen is unavailable.

"McPake wasn’t too impressed with the performance in his post match interview."

lost too many headers, didnt defend the box well enough....well when its a smallish team with not particularly great headers of the ball, that will happen a lot.
