No McCann in the squad today!

I would have started cooper, good luck boys we really need these points!

Disappointing to see no Tobi again. I feel he gives the defence so much more confidence but it’s just our luck he’s injured again. I’m not so encouraged with Mehmet starting…

It’s about time we played two up top but I would prefer to see Sutherland or Mebude up front with Kane for a bit of pace but we can only hope Wighton does enough to show why he’s starting.

This weeks mystery missing player is McCann then, there is always one.

Strange looking team……. Let’s hope we are not making three subs at HT today…..

What an opportunity we missed in 2014.

Only comrie and fogarty are recognised defenders! Is mcpake going to pull a Jimmy C 2-4-4 formation and go all out? Although there are 4 defensive midfielder in there if you include clay. Our squad just always seems short of the players we need regardlesss of how many mcpake signs.

No idea how that team will be set up? We look short of fit defenders again.

Shame the keeper looks like a crock, warning signs were there as he was constantly injured last season too.

God knows what formation that will be
Our players just disappear, Tobi had a niggle a few weeks ago, same with Ngemya. Now McCann has just dropped out.
Cooper not starting is baffling.
I thought we would get a result today but less confident after seeing that team.
Hopefully prove me wrong though.

Did you see last week`s game? Wighton changed the game and heavily involved in the goal. Him and Kane are both capable of scoring, hopefully we actually create done chances for them.

Infuriating to see Cooper on the bench, and I’d hoped Mebude would have started. Is he going to be a super sub?

I’d rather we flew out the traps than play catch up.

Disagree on Cooper. Despite the very good goal, in general play he lost the ball a fair few times in dangerous positions.

Joe, KRH and Wighton deserve their starts and Cooper can be a very effective sub today.

I would have started cooper and mebude just for the sheer buzz and to attack from the off! If the fans see attacking football we all get behind them from the off

It’s a really baffling formation

Agree on formation, but we`re starting with two strikers who are both capable of scoring goals given the chance. Pressure on Todd and KRH to make those chances!

Back to the back three. Young dropped despite being one of out better players the last few weeks. Either Comrie or Ritchie-Hosler going to have to play out of position at left wing back. No attacking width in the team. So glad I`m not going today.

When you`re feeling negative, this is the result. Strange take.

Young was poor last week, and he can`t complain on being dropped. He`s still raw and needs to be managed.

Why can it not be 4-4-2 with both Comrie and KRH in their natural position?

Oh, because you`ve decided. Have a think about it.

Totally agree. Blowing out his hoop after warm up last week. Sutherland is the one right now that should feel aggrieved he hasn’t had a start.

Massive game for Todd, if KRH more defensive it will be long punts up to the top 2 with Todd expected to support and link the play.

Hopefully airdrie still have all thier injury problems!

I predict a 4-2-3-1,

Mehmet,

Comrie Hamilton fogarty otoo,
Chalmers clay,
KRH wighton Todd
Kane

I don`t know how else you would shoe horn them all in.

Looks like he`s trying the dynamic twin strike force of Wighton and Kane. Are they up to it? I do hope so. Strikers hunting in pairs has always been my preference. Who could forget SAS? Maybe WK will form a wicked partnership ( in the best sense of the word of course. Just sipping a coffee in Starbucks adjacent to the Excelsior Stadium, which actually looks quite impressive from the outside. Let`s hope we can emulate the 4-3 game, without the 3 of course.

Hopefully he goes with a 442 and plays 2 up front with Kane and Wighton. I think they are very similar type players. Maybe not so many options. Can’t believe that 2 midfielders are going to be playing in the back 4. I like Fisher and it’s a strange 1 to send Breen out on loan.

I`m interested if Hamilton and otoo are in defence? If they are, I suspect that we will be more efficient going forward. I have always wondered if having the two of them breaking up play actually left us being less dynamic going forward.

Fans been put behind the goals instead of usual stand opposite the main stand.

Someone (maybe two folk?) already been drilled from a wayward shot in the warmup. Hope they are ok.

"Young was poor last week, and he can`t complain on being dropped. He`s still raw and needs to be managed."

He was as good and as poor as anyone. But the manager would rather play midfielders in defence.

"Why can it not be 4-4-2 with both Comrie and KRH in their natural position?"

It could be, but there would be no width on the left (it would either need to be Todd or - shudder - Chalmers there) and we`d have an unbalanced central midfield.

"Oh, because you`ve decided. Have a think about it."

No, I was going by people at the game who were watching the warm up. Is that OK with you? Maybe you should think about things rather than jumping in with two feet?

hope we don`t cave in after that !
It has to be a worry for anyone playing in front of Mehmet knowing if you don`t get a cross ball when it comes into the box , there is no chance of him coming for it , it actually Pi55es me off
And how many times has Mehmet cost us points by not coming for a ball and not just this season ?

Great chance for the Pars as Cooper flicks on Comrie`s cross, which just evades Kane who is now down receiving treatment.

We really need a change. McPake is failing to take points in games we really need to win. Airdrie have been leaking goals and we fail to do anything in open play. Last week was brutal against an average Queen’s Park team. I can’t see us doing any damage to Morton next week with him in charge. The only thing I wouldn’t be surprised at is brutal football, hardly testing the opposition goalkeeper and struggling to deal with corners/crossed balls. It’s boring and predictable. Based on our season so far, relegation looks certain.

We play torrid football, concede from set pieces game after game and struggle to score goals from open play. As much as anything is there anything entertaining about watching a pars game now?

I`d hope a priority moving forward for whoever comes into invest in the club is bringing back some brand of attacking football, right now it`s really a struggle to get excited about the product on the field.

I don’t think the issue is seeing the game and judging the result based on that. It is coming away with only a point after a series of poor results. Is it one win in 15?

The squad is mostly fit and is just not performing well enough. 5 points in 8 games is relegation form. I think the blame lays squarely with the management team. I hope JMcP can turn it round but really don’t think he can!

That was a hard watch. Very little quality from either team but draw probably a fair result.

Both their centre backs looked suspect and with a mistake in them but we rarely worked them.

Thought Hamilton was our best player by some stretch and Clay had a decent game as well. Still badly needing a left sided midfielder/forward, KRH was virtually anonymous.

Slightly different personnel but same old story. Not enough championship level players and a poor management team.

Dapo the latest player in the door with fitness concerns to come in and we wonder why squad is unbalanced and lacking. Kane off injured again so will now be nursed for a month.

The only thing that will change this is a new manager.

Personally I think if you’re talking about the general performance during the game, you’re better to see the game. I’ll use the match v Ayr as evidence, loads came on here for a pop at the team afterwards even though it was a decent performance.

You’re 100% correct about 5 points though.
If form continues we’re on for a rip roaring season total of 22/23 points…

I honestly don’t expect to see him loose his job after today but surely the exit door is at least ajar

Mcpake couldn’t set up a direct debit. A manager who knows he can phone it in all season without threat of a sack.

He either doesn’t know a championship level player when he sees it or he can’t set up a team with championship players to compete at championship level. Which one is it?

Is there a fan out there who believes mcpake is good enough to get us competing at the top end of the league playing decent fitba?

The board has to rip the band-aid off!

You could argue he could`ve been sacked with no complaints after QP 0-3 last season.

You could argue he could`ve been gone after getting knocked out the cup by two part-time lower league teams.

The longer it goes on. The harder the task for the next manager.

Yeah I’d wager Grant had at least the same amount of points as mcpake currently has at the start of that season.

If the Germans were not selling then surely he would have been out by now? Feels like theres no leadership in the boardroom to take the responsibility and punt him, instead we think allowing him to sign more players is the answer.

Meanwhile the rudderless ship continues to slowly sink.

☝🏻 I think he’s correct.

As soon as I seen us I said we’ve got relegation written all over us. A couple of new signings, 2 decent performances had me thinking we were at least back on track but now it’s all heading the way it was. If we don’t finish bottom it’ll only be for the sake of Airdrie being worse.

Football is a disaster this year, yesterday we keep seeing glimpses of positivity eg v Dun Utd last year, 1st half v Ayr, v Raith.

I honestly think if Tobi was playing every week we would be so much better. He gets the team further up the park and hence we are more attacking. He also commands his box, Mehmet doesn’t and I don’t think the defence have confidence in him.
Mehmet makes us play from the back and we are quickly closed down by the opposition and then put under pressure.

We played a good first half against Ayr with arguably our best starting 11 and then made 3-4 substitutions and then fell out of the game. Why make substitutions for the sake of it? Surely these players can play 90mins.

JMcP really has to do better. I hope he turns things around but I can’t see it. I do think the biggest issue is with the keeper and I hope we get Tobi back asap (does anyone know when he is likely to be back) and then see some improvement in performances.

Really lack lustre stuff from us. The keeper was not at fault for the goal - it could have gone anywhere.

It`s hard to think of a group of passes we strung together. It`s hard to think of too many successful throw ins. We put in some very poor cross balls. Some reasonably simple things we get wrong.

When we went in front they and their fans were down and out. But at no point did we dominate. If anything the longer the game went on the more confident Airdrie became - I wasnt expecting us to survive.

Confidence is seriously lacking but we do seem to lack a real leader on the pitch.

It has to get better soon.

Again wasn’t there today but another disappointing result in the long run.

His record is just as bad as Grant and Yogi who were (rightly) hounded out of the club - how long does he have left realistically?

I like to come on here to see folks thoughts on the game and compare them with my own but now I realise the majority of contributors weren`t at the game and post comments based on other games they`ve seen (or maybe not seen).

Suggesting that Mehmet makes us play from the back is a new one though. I presume that is laid down by the manager but today he mostly hit it long.

Hammy was excellent today playing at CB and he saved our bacon near the end when he appeared to be outpaced by an Airdrie attacker who broke into our box but somehow he managed to legally ease him off the ball so Mehmet could come and claim it. Wighton was also very effective dinking balls behind the defence and one of these led to the penalty. I also thought Matty Todd was sharper than last week and Mebude could cause defences trouble. I think he was fouled every time he got the ball.

Pretty poor stuff from us again. I think our only serious chance in the whole game was the penalty and the decision to award that looked an absolute joke to me. I`d have been furious if that decision had gone against us.

It was a poor game and nobody would be surprised that both sides are at the bottom. There wasn`t much in it early on, we got the penalty out of nothing then we really struggled from then until half-time. Just not on it as a team as the gaps seemed to open up everywhere, though Airdrie didn`t look very good either. You hoped that having made it to half-time we might get back into the game in the second half but it always had a feeling of holding on, even though we weren`t really under any heavy pressure.

The draw was fair enough, but frustrating we couldn`t hold on to win. My initial thought was that Mehmet didn`t do much wrong at the goal, but it was a shocking goal to lose for other reasons. How we can be pulled apart by a simple routine from a shy is ridiculous, and how we can have a man completely free at the back post is mad. I don`t blame Aaron Comrie for it, as my memory of it is that he was left 2 on 1 and had to take the man inside, which obvioulsy left the other free. In that situation, like the two goals we lost last week, it`s on the whole team to defend, not just those playing at the back. The repeated failure to do that can only be a failure of coaching.

Two poor teams on the day, and a refereeing performance enitrely in keeping with the standard of the teams.

We`re just not a coherent team and when you make so many basic mistakes on top of that, it`s hard to win. We did little in the second half, but had 4 chances to put balls in the box from corners or free kicks quite close together late in the game. Every one of the balls in was terrible which stops you getting pressure on.

Chris Hamilton had a decent game at the back, Maty Todd had a few runs that made me thing there might be more to come, Aaron Comrie was steady enough and Chris Kane had a few moments where he nipped into cause some panic, but that really was it.

I`m glad we managed a point, but it`s got to be better than that.

I think the poor performance last week cost us. On another day a point against Airdrie would have been a good result. The teams up to 5th in the league have only won 2 games. Ayr and Falkirk are obviously running away with it this season but every other spot is still up for grabs at the moment.

When Mehmet plays he passes the ball to the nearest defender. When Tobi plays everyone goes forward and he comes out 25 yards or so and punts the ball. The team are all further forward. No immediate pressure on the defence and no tedious trying to pass up the field and inevitably losing possession. Have you not noticed this?

There’s no question in my mind that Deniz Mehmet’s overall game is not good enough for the Scottish Championship but he can’t be scapegoated for the performances of the 10 in front of him.
Tobi is the 1st time we’ve seen a modern goalkeeper playing for us and the difference it made to us as a team was immense. He pushed the game forward and then it gave us more time and space at the back when we needed it. Only time will tell how successful he’ll be with us tho

Away! With the new keeper, the back line are starting at the half Way line any time he has the ball. You can`t be offside from a goal kick and tobi can clear the park from his 6-yard line.

The whole team starts further up the park and when we win 2nd balls, we are already In the opponents half.

Yeah, it’s moved us much further up the park but how we’re setting up defensively hasn’t really changed. We’re still not a high pressing team. When they get the ball we still tend to drop back and fall into a formation.

If we had any pace in the backline, we may have tried to be much more high pressing. I actually think young and foggarty look like they may be quick enough but I may be wrong.

There`s no doubt he has a long kick, but I actually don`t think we used it enough in the games he played. Both keepers have recently tried to play a mix of long and short stuff from the back so it`s just not true to say that one plays long and the other short. It just seems one of these over-simplifications that people seem fond of - the other recent one was people who were convinced that 3 at the back was the problem, sometimes coming after games when we hadn`t even played 3 at the back.

I don`t think McPake doesn`t try to win games, I just think there are so many deficiencies in his team that it`s difficult to do so.

We`re generally poor as a team when we need to come back from a goal down. We also don`t handle games that well when we have a lead, though part of that is probably now panic because we`ve won so rarely. I hate short, slow, ineffective football so trying to be a bit more direct is welcome and stops us giving the ball away so often in stupid positions but it`s difficult to get far with it because we don`t have a credible direct option. We haven`t for years and it`s a team conditioned into playing over-passy rubbish for at least 3 managers in a row that then has little to offer when the style has to change. We`re utterly incapable of hitting teams with quick, direct attacks. Our players have been conditioned to think about playing slow and keeping the ball, and so even though we are a bit more direct than we`ve been, they often just aren`t minded to do anything quickly and fall back to going slow and backwards, or stopping and taking a second, when what is needed is a simple quick pass.

We`re now also losing some pretty terrible goals, and that`s a combination that`s going to make things pretty hard.

As a team, we look utterly bereft of anything. We need a lift and a change pretty soon. But I do think people often want to over-simplify things which puts the focus on things that are only symptoms.

It’s not just about playing Mehmet getting the ball up the park, although there is a massive contrast between him and Tobi.

It’s his positioning in the box, his inability to come for balls, flapping when he should be catching. He seems to be disconnected from the defence and this is leading to errors and the lose of stupid goals!

No one is talking about a higher defensive press!!

The backline is further up the pitch with the new keeper.

The whole team/game is played further up the pitch with the new keeper due to his style and kicking ability.

It`s funny how an on loan player with such strengths can dictate how a team plays. Especially when he won`t be here permanently

Our best performances, in my opinion were against Ayr and Raith, and in between we beat East Fife. Tobi played in all those 3 matches. Mehmet came back in against Partick.

NO! They....and the rest of the team are 15-20 yards further up the pitch. Anytime the new keeper has the ball, our back line are STARTING at the halfway line.

When Mehmet has the ball they are between the halfway line and 18 yrd line.

Jesus suffering man....its fundamentals.

They are closer to their own goal and further away from ours by default. The whole team is further up the park....and get this....the game is played that wee bit further away from our goal!

All because a keeper can kick a ball the full length of the pitch and is comfortable as a sweeper.

Now are we playing a high pressing game or do we prefer to hold a formation and try and contain them?

That depends on the situation.

But I don`t know why you are widening the topic of conversation. We are talking about the defensive positioning, not the philosophy.

Press only really works from front to back. So, losing the ball in midfield as the result of a 2nd ball means that a press won`t normally work. Unless you have Kante.

I’m not widening the topic of conversation, I’m talking about defensive positioning. The defensive strategy hasn’t changed.

Anyone who says our players were "excellent" yesterday is clutching at straws. Hamilton was probably our best player but he was far from excellent. Yesterday was another poor performance with our only threat being the penalty. We looked like relegation candidates at the start of the season and there is no evidence after the 8 league games to change my mind.

The build up to their goal out on the wing was poor. Again we won the ball but put it out of play. We thought at the time they stole a ridiculous amount of yards with their throw and they did - but got away with it.

I didn`t see the goal as the fault of Deniz. There were three Pars players ball watching in the box with the Airdrie player in acres of space at the back post.

I thought our two best players yesterday were Chris Hamilton and Ewan Otoo and I had the opportunity to tell Ewan that this morning because I met him and two friends walking down Kelvinhaugh Street, in Glasgow. Think he was slightly surprised to meet a Par there.

McPake had a couple of selection headaches – no Tobi, no Ngwenya, no Bene, no McCann; Breen, the Tod brothers, the younger Sutherland, McLeod, Hoggan and Rowe all away on loan. Some of the solutions were obvious; others less so.

I think there are some truisms about selection:

Young players (pun intended) are inconsistent – they come into the side and look promising, make a couple of errors then are rested to learn and come back better;

Competition for places should force an improvement in performance;

It can take players a little time to regain match sharpness after a spell out, so Todd, Dapo and Clay might not last the 90;

And often there is clamour to start players who came on in the last game and looked good for 15 minutes against a tiring team sitting back and defending a lead. Do they deserve a start? (It’s a different ball game after all.)

So Hamilton and Otoo started the back, Todd got the nod on the right, KRH started on the left, and Clay and Chalmers were in the middle, presumably with the former doing the running and ball-winning leaving Chalmers to do the passing. Ahead of them came WIghton – a bit deeper than he might be used to, but potentially useful.

I thought there were noticeable differences in our play – maybe subtle, but an improvement in attitude – less faffing about at the back (I noticed Mehmet taking charge a couple of times and insisting on the long ball), Chalmers seemed faster in thought and action, although his natural instinct is still to pause and look for a pass, and Wighton played some nice dinks into the box, one of which led to the penalty.

Todd made one or two nice runs, but KRH seemed a little on his heels with our best (virtually only) chance of the second half.

Kane going off was a big loss – he puts defences under pressure and it seemed odd to put Spoony on instead of Taylor although the latter got a run-out eventually. Suddenly we lacked a bit of height (Dapo seems a very small 6 foot 2 from a distance)

Airdrie were more insistent on building from their own 6 yard box – when it works, it looks good – there was one move in particular where they worked the ball down the park; I’m not convinced it’s a sensible tactic at this level – it seems more like an attempt to mimic world class players, and we did put them under pressure.

It was another bad goal to lose – where was everyone? Someone in front of me was bellowing for Comrie to cover the wide player – in my view he correctly chose the player in the 6 yard box, so Hancock was left on his own. Mehmet hesitated a fraction, I thought; perhaps if you ask a forward to anticipate a mistake, then you should ask the same of a keeper, but I think it is better for him to act as if he has a reliable defence in front of him. The back-post problem seemed to affect us at the other end of the pitch as well – several times we put a ball in deep but there was no-one there….

In conclusion I think the point suits us more than it does Airdrie – we look more like a relegation play-off team rather than a bottom of the table one, but in a tight division someone’s got to finish last.

As Socks hints it may be difficult to change the habits of a lifetime overnight – we are showing more forward intent and more urgency but improvement is a bit glacial, like going from a 5/10 to a 5.2/10 rather than the 7 or 8 we are looking for.

Should we bin the manager? It’s an expensive way to introduce a new broom, but something has to change. It is said that sometimes something as simple as changing the colour of the paint on the walls can improve productivity in an office environment. I’d change back to black shorts (it’s probably against the kit regulations); perhaps Dapo can provide the catalyst. We need a spark from somewhere.

Meanwhile, it’s Kelty next week who are 2 places below us in the pyramid and on the back of a big win in Dumfries. I’d make them favourites right now, but another defeat could spell curtains for the gaffer.

Finally – any news on the lad that was stretchered out before kick-off?

If we get beat at home again off a league 1 team he better be sacked by the end of the day.

Do we have new owners yet ? Nope.... As I`ve said above it will cost our actual owners more if and more likely when we get relegated than it will to keep him as he is completely out of his depth and so is his team.

If we get beat of Kelty at EEP McPake should walk as that is embarrassing…if he doesn’t walk then should be told to resign.

We play Championship teams though, cammypar and AE; Kelty play League one teams, which might have a bearing on why they look good. They maybe wouldn`t be doing any better than us or Airdrie in the Champ. Therefore .... I`m no even gonny say it - fingers, toes, legs, eyes, my heart, you name it everything I can cross is crossed - that we beat Kelty.

Mcpake will probably play a mixture of first teamers and those on the fringes ,to get their minutes topped up ,sick of hearing that phrase, and lose to kelty , but the narrative of not being a first choice will buy him more time .
That and the lack of money to pay him off .

Be amazed if it`s anything other than a full strength team - from those who are available - next week given the situation we are in.

Regarding the guy who was hit with the ball in the warmup on Saturday.

He was knocked out cold and went into a seizure as a result. Taken to hospital and checked and all OK now thankfully. Must say the Airdrie medical staff and first aiders were over in a flash and no messing about so much credit to them.

Mcpake hinted at giving others game time to "top up their minutes" in his post match interview on Saturday. Id also be amazing considering we are not playing until 7 days after so it`s not like we need to look after players etc as some do if they play Saturday Wednesday.

They`re top of League 1 now but it`s pretty tight with only 2 points separating the top five. Although they`ve won their last two games they lost the two before that and drew the two before them.

McPake would be mad to play anything but his strongest team against Kelty, given we find it so difficult to beat anyone at the moment. The trouble is, I don`t think he has a clue what his strongest team is.

Surely for mcpake the strongest team is the one which gives us the best chance for a clean sheet.
