 Release list
Topic Originator: 2004Par
Date:   Wed 7 May 14:04

From COWS-Following the conclusion of the 2024/25 season, Dunfermline Athletic can provide the following squad update.

Leaving the club at the end of their contracts are Aaron Comrie, Joe Chalmers, Craig Wighton, Rhys Breen, David Wotherspoon, Craig Clay, Michael O’Halloran and Omar Taylor-Clarke.

Would have kept comrie IMO and maybe Clay.

Wouldn`t have kept any of them other than Clay as Lennon seemed to get the best out of him but I`m confident we`ll get much better in next season...right?

Delighted with that, each player has played there part during their time with the club but now is the time to move on and let us build as a club pushing for promotion.

I assume Lennon will be announced soon as he would’ve had the final decision over who goes and who stays.

Why on earth are we talking to Wanyama and Oakley-Boothe?

Comrie would have been a good option to keep but agree with the rest leaving.

The opening post omitted this bit-

Dialogue remains ongoing with Chris Hamilton, Josh Cooper, Tashan Oakley-Boothe, Jeremiah Chilokoa Mullen and Victor Wanyama.

Young players Jake Sutherland Liam Hoggan and Ewan McLeod have all been offered new terms. Goalkeeper Lewis Briggs will be leaving the club at the end of his contract and we thank him for his efforts while at the club.

Lewis McCann has also undergone surgery following his recent injury, and the club will provide facilities for his rehabilitation and will remain in dialogue with Lewis. Further updates will be issued in due course.

Oakley Boothe is a bit of a shock, haven`t seen anything impressive from him really. Wanyama isn`t a surprise with the noises coming from the club, Hamilton didn`t have the best of seasons but I understand him being kept (as a squad option).

Delighted with Cooper and JCM, moreso the latter but Cooper has shown promise when given the chance.

No huge surprises in the departure list. Wish them all well in future.

A couple of things that do spring to mind:-

1 - Glad we`ve offered rehab to McCann. He`s a long serving player and deserves the support to get back with us or someone else.

2 - What has happened to Mebude? He seems to have disappeared since going to Septemvri.

3 - Slight worry that we`re negotiating with Chilokoa-Mullen. I had hoped that 1 year `option` would be a done deal.

4 - Surprised we`re negotiating with Wanyama.

Presumably because the manager might want to keep them, as will be the case for the others we are `in dialogue` with.

no mention of Mebude....

only surprise in the list is there arent more, the Mullen situation is a bit strange when they have the option already in place, thought thats what would happen with McCann because of the injury but the rest should be going also imo.

the kids, Sutherland and McLeod were a no brainer, didnt think Hoggan would be offered anything though.

edit: the "dialogue" might be come back for preseason and we will see, it might not mean they have all been offered a new contract.

I would imagine the negotiations with Mullen will probably be to do with the length of contract. Rumours are we had a one year option but I’d imagine the club may want to increase that.

Can’t say I’m surprised at the list. I think they’re the right players to be leaving, although Comrie might feel hard done by (assuming it was not his choice) and I did wonder if Lennon saw a future, in some capacity, for Clay.

As has been mentioned, I’m surprised that Tash is in talks. Can’t say that I have seen much to suggest he is a player that will cut it, but Lennon has mentioned him a few times in interviews and obviously sees something he can work with and develop. As for the others, I’m neither here nor there about Hamilton, but have said before that Cooper could develop into an asset. Wanyama, we’ve all said it, give him a pre-season and time and he could rip this league apart, let’s hope that’s the plan.

By and large, I’m happy…..still leaves a lot of spaces to fill and the overhaul has started.

I`ll miss comrie he`s been a fantastic servant to us but ultimately time to move on, back to St Johnstone perhaps?

The rest is the right call.

There`s something I like about Oakley booth and maybe with a preseason he might be more effective but I`m yet to be convinced. Wanyama is done imo. I`d take a chance on Cooper.

I love Hammy but I`m not sure he gets you to the next level. Mcann is the same, although in a free scoring team he might finally be worth the wait.

Yeah I would keep Hammy he is very good at breaking up play when he plays in front of the back line and that is in my opinion his best position. Needs to improve his passing but he also is a benefit to the team with his versatility.

There are 24 players on the Wikipedia list. Assuming it’s accurate, I’d expect a few of the younger lads to go out on loan and maybe lose a couple during negotiations! That’ll leave 6-8 spaces to fill with the quality we need to get into contention.

No real surprises there for me.

There are arguments that with better coaching, better team-mates, a better pre-season and a better pitch some might come onto a game, but that’s a lot of ifs, particularly for the older players.

Comrie may have been told that he’s welcome to stay but he’ll be behind Bray in the pecking order. Similar with Hamilton – good to come on to see out the game, but less likely to start. This may be the case with one or two others. Of course, this is all dependent on who the manager will be.

Wighton and Breen have not been in the plans for a while and the former has fitness worries. I don’t think Lennon will have seen Mebude much. Has he still got a few months left on his contract?

Wotherspoon and MOH have been disappointments. As has Chalmers, to a certain extent – although Lennon seems a fan (as were Tidser and McPake).

OTC looked a bit lightweight. I thought Clay offered something a bit different, but I suspect there are plenty like him in the lower English leagues. Perhaps the analytics can identify a replacement?. Better in a team that is having to battle, perhaps, than one which hopes to be on the front foot more?/

Clearly the loanees will go back to their parent club. Tobi certainly and possibly Fogarty might be worth trying to get back.

I guess Margetts may be lined up as the number 3 keeper?

It is quite a brutal business though. One moment you are a promising prospect, the next you are let go because there is someone still under contract and it is easier to bin you.

None of our loaned out players this season ended up at other Championship sides, which says a lot. Today’s statement feels like a clear sign the board and Lennon aren’t content with just surviving. Would have let Hamilton go personally, being a Pars man isn`t enough.

Granted I`ve only seen him 6 or 7 times this season but his use of the ball is arguably the worst in the squad and mix that in with too many silly bookings as well.

Hate to be negative around players but just calling it as I see it.

No surprised in who is defo leaving. Suprised at Oakley, he played like someone who is in year 1 of the 4 year deal, maybe Lenny thinking he can get him to show some interest. Would not offer wanyama a contract until he had done pre season and we can see if the desire is still there.

Feel like Hamilton should move on or at best he’s a sub, pars man and gives his all but lacking in stature for the top end of this league. If anyone who is free to leave signs on for next year it maybe suggests we’re not going for quite the overhaul expected.

Interesting on McCann, we haven’t simply triggered the year option as yet so hard to tell what they are going to do, good to give him the facilities for his rehab tho.

it makes no sense at all and more so when you look at what Lennon has said since he took over whether it be about lack of quality, attacking play or fitness certainly in Wanyama`s case.

you dont keep guys that are not any better than what is already under contract even if you are trying to move some of those on.

There wouldn`t have been offers from a championship club. As I have said before the statement shows intent on building something new. Out with the old, in with the future. The direction`s right, the mentality`s changing. Trust the process and look forward to seeing what Lennon produces.

I think the issue with Mebude may be that the Bulgarian league hasn`t ended yet? Presumably when his loan ends and he returns he`ll be thanked for his efforts and released.

Of the contracted players, I assume Mehmet will be away given his wee cheerio cameo at Cappielow, and there are obviously question marks over Benedictus and Fisher with the court case pending.

I’m happy with all the released players tbh, Comrie was a maybe.

Regarding Oakley-Boothe I think there’s a player there, with a full pre season behind him he could be a real asset. Lennon seems to rate him so I’m happy with that.

Be interesting to see who we actually bring in, that’s the joys of the summer. Thankfully it’s one we can enjoy as Pars fans with a few quality signings to strengthen what we have. Attacking players are a given.

Apart from that , they are all still under contract.

Oakley-Boothe is certainly a talented player. As has been said, maybe having better players and more movement around him will see us get more from him.

My slight concern with him has been his ability to play in a physical league, one with little protection from referees. I think he`s gone into his shell a wee bit during games after an opponent has clattered him. I want to see him show a bit more dig.

I think everyone is hoping Wanyama after a preseason will be much more up to speed. He’ll never be the most mobile now but I remember when Ian Ferguson joined us at the end of his career. Wasn’t the most mobile but was a good passer and would control the rest of the midfield. With the greatest respect to Ian Ferguson, Wanyama was a much higher quality player in his prime so it could turn out to be a good move 🤷🏻‍♂️ who knows!

I’m disappointed with Comrie leaving but not surprised either. I wonder if he called time on it himself? The guy owes the club nothing. Been a fantastic servant and I’d wish him well.

Exciting to see what happens with Mullen and co. Also to see who we’ll bring in. I’ve not been checking to see who’s available this summer but god damn I hope this summer is better than previous years 😂

Just talking to Wanyama suggests it`s only a matter of time before Lennon is officially announced.

Raymies mention of the pitch and the struggling squad is spot on.

The Iain Ferguson comparison is a good one, although I`m undecided whether a full preseason will make Wanyama a good addition or not.

Brother will have the summer to beef up a bit,and may well come good with better players around him,as well as a new pitch.

2 new keepers (hopefully with Tobi returning) are now a necessity. With Mehmet as 3rd choice.

I hope the released guys find themselves a new club but don`t come to haunt us.

Not sure on the comparison between Ferguson and wanyama.

Ferguson was a consummate professional who set and expected high standards from others and although he had lost a yard he still have the brain and kept himself in shape. wanyama rocked up having not looked after himself for the best part of a year and was pretty much retired and coasting.

Wanyama needs to show he’s prepared to change his lifestyle and get back to full fitness before we should offer him anything. He’s a Lennon fav so he’ll likely get a deal this week if he wants it. He’ll be worth millions so spending the summer and the next year doing the hard yards without a holiday for a few thousand a week it a big test!

I’m in the minority on Oakley-Boothe, I think there is definitely a player there.

Thought he got a bit of a hard time all because he wasn’t running about everywhere but whenever I’ve seen him he’s looked good, and his football brain just seems better than others.

Difficult to stand out in a poor team so think better players will bring the best out of him.

Good luck to all those who are leaving, and thanks for your efforts. Some will have been expecting to leave, for others it might have come as a very unwelcome shock.

It`s a harsh business, but there are lots of examples of players released from one club who go on to have good careers with other clubs.

Maybe it`s a sign of the times but I`m just not that fussed about any of the released guys, Comrie apart. Really disappointed in guys like Wotherspoon, expected much more from him. The rest seem like good guys, but most have had a decent run with us and time after time have been shown up as average at best. I`m sick of spending good money watching us p1ss about in 8th or 9th all season. It`s unacceptable.

Looking forward to new signings that can really light the place up.

I don`t know how accurate this is, but a mate was told that Comrie was offered a new contract and turned it down. He`s been travelling through from the West for a few years now, and it may be that his agent has found him a club nearer home.

All the best, Aaron. A consummate professional and a fine player who has always given 100% every time he stepped on the pitch. Not least, a warm, humble and very likeable young man.

Pretty sure Comrie now lives in Hamilton with his partner and young child. Morton, Partick or Accies if they can sort themselves out might be good options for him.

Agreed on Oakley-Booth.

You could see he was used to perhaps playing at a higher level with better players.

Quite a few times he would have the ball in decent positions and you could see him visibly frustrated that team mate(s) weren`t where they should be - or at least where he expected them to be - in terms of their positioning to move the ball onto them which would often result in him being closed down or forced into having to go back the way or even losing possession and end up with the fans on his back.

I assume Comrie will get a good club, I hope so, he`s a very good Championship player and wouldn`t be out of place at a level up.

Is Sam Young not on the list? He didn`t make the cut at Forfar, I thought his contract is up.

I honestly think he`d struggle in a top 4 Championship side. I get the sentiment around homegrown players, it`s always nice seeing one of our own come through. But sentiment doesn`t win games. If we`re serious about improving the squad and our league position, we need better quality.

No doubt Oakley is a very good player who could play at a higher level but has lost the hunger for the game, hence the reason he ended up at the bottom end of the Scottish championship.

As mentioned tends to start games well, the opposition then position a guy near him then he disappears completely and stops showing for it. originally put it down to lack of matches but it persisted. Not sure this league is the right one for him as you get kicked and don’t get the time on the ball.

He may improve with better players that can take it into feet but needs to be far more active and have more fight for me.

It’s getting close to last chance saloon for him to play at a higher level, perhaps a 1 year deal where he gives it a real go and he could end up getting a move back up the leagues even if not with us.

I agree with Berkey there. Oakley-Boothe does look like he has some quality, but for me, doesn`t look like he has the heart. Strikes me as the sort of player that had too much too young and has been coasting along on past glories for a while now. If someone could get something out of him (and if anyone can, it`ll be Lennon), then there`s a player there, but I bet there are a lot of managers that have tried and he`s not repaid that faith

Nice deflection.

We are not talking about any other managers. This list is Lennon`s choice.
Do you really think you are better equipped to assess the players?

He knows his plans, what support he has, and the capabilities of the players. He can also assess how they will fit with what he brings in.

Time to bin the past.
