 Scotland`s greatest song
Topic Originator: Raymie the Legend
Date:   Mon 16 Nov 09:51

A competition to find our greatest song has been going on across the Greatest Hits network over the last few months. They have now settled on the final 10 which are:-

Dignity: Deacon Blue
Whole of The Moon: The Waterboys
Loaded: Primal Scream
Tinseltown in the Rain: The Blue Nile
Baker Street: Gerry Rafferty
Sunshine on Leith: The Proclaimers
In a Big Country: Big Country
This is the Life: Amy MacDonald
Black Eyed Boy: Texas
Somewhere in My Heart: Aztec Camera

Good to see my old friend and big Pars man, Stuart Adamson, in there.
I can`t see any Jambos voting for the Proclaimers or many Hoops fans for Amy MacDonald

The public will now vote with the result to be announced on St Andrew`s Day

My top 3:-

Baker Street
Whole of the Moon
Dignity

Dignity, Whole of the Moon and In a big country for me.

Strange not seeing Travis, Biffy Clyro or Eurythmics/Annie Lennox in there.

As a piece of popular music I`d probably go for `Baker Street` with that classic sax riff.

My favourite Big Country song is `Chance`.

Of the songs on the list it has to be ‘Baker Street’. Gerry Rafferty wrote some really beautiful, heartbreaking songs. Two prime examples ‘Her Father didn’t Like Me Anyway’ and ‘Whatever’s Written in your Heart’.

Hearts fans may not like it, but ‘Sunshine on Leith’ is another really fine song.

Take it we're not claiming AC/DC or Garbage 😉

There's a load of great Scottish artists but surprised Frightened Rabbit didn't make the cut. Never massively famous but definitely consistent.

An all time classic.

Don't think we can lay claim to Garbage or Ac/dc unfortunately.
Scottish connection definitely but not known as Scottish bands as we know it.

Baker Street is a classic, but not even Raffertys best song. Still, I'd have it in my top 3 along with Dignity and The Whole Of The Moon. ACDC, with 4 Scottish born members past and present have got to be claimed as a Scottish band. Big Country had less Scottish born members or their classic line up, only Bruce

As far as I'm aware when it comes to bands it's all down to where the band was formed and not the nationality of the band members .. Ac/dc were formed in Australia... Garbage were formed in the US.

There was a similar one of these things a few years ago and they included The Sweet, on account of one of them being Scottish.

Simple Minds are another superb Scottish band but they have loads of far better songs than Alive and Kicking, sadly they'll never make the grade like the big hits would.

New Gold Dream
Hunter & the Hunted
Changeling
I Travel
Book of Brilliant Things
Ghostdancing
Stay Visible
Moscow Underground

Could go on all day.

Certainly provokes a great debate!

Sitting listening to "Wid mountain thyme" being sung by The Byrds, it was a great favourite of the American folk singers, Dylan, Baez etc.

This made me think of other standards such as "Auld Lang Syne" how many recordings of this?

Surely the biggest record seller has to be "Sailing" recorded by many but famously by the "plastic Scotsman"đŸ€”

Karine Polwart has a couple of classic songs, Waterlily and Follow the Heron. Mentioned previously Wild Mountain Tyme The Silencers done a fantastic version and mention to Love and Money for Last Ship on the River amongst others. Screamadelica by Primal scream was one of my favourite albums as a teenager. No mention for Andy Cameron for Ally`s Army? :)

Most of the bases have been covered already. Here`s a few I have on Spotify

Alive & Kicking-Simple Minds
Don`t You Forget About Me-Simple Minds
Into the Valley-Skids-Surprised this one hasn`t been mentioned!
Walking On Broken Glass-Annie Lennox
Obsession-Ultra Sonic
Dignity-Deacon Blue
Power of Love Q-tex
Belter-Gerry Cinnamon
Come Together-Primal Scream
Wages Day-Deacon Blue
Chocolate Girl-Deacon Blue
Loch Lomond-Runrig
Your Love Gets Sweeter-Finley Quaye
Same Jeans-The View
Even After All-Finley Quaye
Movin On Up-Primal Scream
Sing-Travis
Say What You Want-Texas
Sunday Shining-Finley Quaye
Fergus Sings The Blues-Deacon Blue
Real Gone Kid-Deacon Blue
Annihilating Rythm-Ultra Sonic
Baker Street-Gerry Rafferty
New Shoes-Paolo Nutini
Belfast Child-Simple Minds
Give Me Your Lovin-Tom Wilson/TTF
Driftwood-Travis
Fratellis-Chelsea Dagger
Calvin Harris-We Found Love

Now there`s an eclectic mix! Actually got a few more too.Was surprised by the amount of Scottish influence in my music having looked at it.Sometimes even like a bit of Gaelic music-Julie Fowlis etc

Generally not my cup of tea but Calvin Harris is the most successful Scottish artist in terms of number ones and I`d imagine money generated too?

This is just a popularity contest.
There have been some fantastic alternative/indie Scottish band that have had fantastic songs but cause they are not mainstream have no chance getting nominated for something like this.
Sure the songs on this list are good and they are popular because they are good but there is so much more out there than this.

If I were to come up with a list of best alternative/indie songs these would be included.

The Associates - Party Fears Two

Altered Images - Happy Birthday

Arab Strap - First Big Weekend

Idlewild - Satan Polaroid

Urusei Yatsura - Slain by Elf

I think Baker Street and Whole of the Moon are the two `greatest` songs on the list, beating each other depending on whether you like smoother classic sounds or are a fan of the alternative spectrum (I`m the latter).

There`s a programme (probably a repeat) about Gerry Rafferty on BBC4 tonight at 9.30. It seems to be Scottish night as the Proclaimers, Annie Lennox, Travis and Emeli Sande are on later and Barbara Dickson and Rod Stewart were on earlier.

Well the G Rafferty programme was a repeat. I think it may have been shown originally just after he died. It was well worth a second look and if you missed it you should be able to pick it up on the iplayer. He wrote so many memorable songs.

Just saw this thread so thought I’d throw in a few;

Silencers - Scottish Rain
Kevin McDermott Orchestra - Wheels of Wonder (I saw them in Kirkcaldy years ago - they’d fallen out with their record company and played as “the Dolphins”)
Bluebells - Cath
Rab Noakes - When this bloody war is over
Lloyd Cole and the Commotions- Perfect Skin
John Martyn - Johnny Too Bad
Donovan - Hurdy Gurdy Man
Bert Jansch - Needle of Death
Goodbye Mr McKenzie - Goodbye Mr McKenzie
King Creosote - Diamond Mine
