A competition to find our greatest song has been going on across the Greatest Hits network over the last few months. They have now settled on the final 10 which are:-

Of the songs on the list it has to be âBaker Streetâ. Gerry Rafferty wrote some really beautiful, heartbreaking songs. Two prime examples âHer Father didnât Like Me Anywayâ and âWhateverâs Written in your Heartâ.
Hearts fans may not like it, but âSunshine on Leithâ is another really fine song.

As far as I'm aware when it comes to bands it's all down to where the band was formed and not the nationality of the band members .. Ac/dc were formed in Australia... Garbage were formed in the US.

There was a similar one of these things a few years ago and they included The Sweet, on account of one of them being Scottish.

Simple Minds are another superb Scottish band but they have loads of far better songs than Alive and Kicking, sadly they'll never make the grade like the big hits would.

Sitting listening to "Wid mountain thyme" being sung by The Byrds, it was a great favourite of the American folk singers, Dylan, Baez etc.
This made me think of other standards such as "Auld Lang Syne" how many recordings of this?
Surely the biggest record seller has to be "Sailing" recorded by many but famously by the "plastic Scotsman"đ€

Jesus and Mary Chain Darklands album has a few classics. Also Kevin McDermott Orchestra with the album Mother Natures Kitchen. Karine Polwart has a couple of classic songs, Waterlily and Follow the Heron. Mentioned previously Wild Mountain Tyme The Silencers done a fantastic version and mention to Love and Money for Last Ship on the River amongst others. I could go on Scotland has given some fantastic music to the world.

There`s a programme (probably a repeat) about Gerry Rafferty on BBC4 tonight at 9.30. It seems to be Scottish night as the Proclaimers, Annie Lennox, Travis and Emeli Sande are on later and Barbara Dickson and Rod Stewart were on earlier.

Well the G Rafferty programme was a repeat. I think it may have been shown originally just after he died. It was well worth a second look and if you missed it you should be able to pick it up on the iplayer. He wrote so many memorable songs.
