 NASA moon launch
Topic Originator: buffy

For us space nerds it’s -0:14:18 mins til Artemis II lifts off for its journey to the moon. It won’t be landing on the moon but orbiting it and will be breaking the distance travelled record.

You can watch it live on BBC News from 11:24pm our time and also on NASA’s you tube channel.

Why they have a manned space flight and not even land on the moon is bizarre.

If you read about, it you’ll understand why. It’s been 50 years since NASA has sent a spacecraft into orbit so it needs to navigate this first before further test flights can be conducted.

From NASA ~ This mission is to lay the ground for a lunar landing by astronauts in the Artemis IV mission, planned for 2028.

Ahead of that, Nasa plans another crewed test mission, Artemis III, in 2027, to rehearse Orion`s rendezvous and docking with one or more lunar landers and to try out the new spacesuits if they are ready in time.

Nasa has picked two rival commercial landers for Artemis: SpaceX`s Starship and a craft designed by Jeff Bezos`s company Blue Origin, and will decide closer to the time which vehicles fly which missions.

When Artemis IV finally flies, the astronauts will be heading to the Moon`s south pole.
After this, the aim is to have another landing later in 2028 with the Artemis V mission, to build up the capability for a sustained human presence on the Moon.”

Some absolutely phenomenal stats after launch......10000 mph after 5 minutes........15000 mph after 7 minutes.

I can understand why some will feel like "why?" but I find utterly fascinating.

Fingers crossed it all goes to plan and they return safely.

They go at up to Mach15 which is 11500 mph.
Or 18500km/h

I was at the final Shuttle launch and it was incredible. The feel of the rumble of those solid rocket boosters that vaporised the clouds that day was amazing as the ground was shaking. I can only imagine was it was like yesterday.
The feeling of touch and go that day due to the rains that disappeared just before the launch made it even more special.

I think NASA used to be terribly cautious, particularly with the Apollo program, presumably after the Apollo 1 tragedy.

So Apollo 7 was "merely" a manned earth orbit.

Apollo 8 went round the moon with Tom Hanks as command module pilot - they were there at Christmas which seemed a big deal. Less than a month later the Pars would play West Brom, for context.

I think Apollo 9 was just another earth orbit to test the manoeuvrability of the Lunar Module, Apollo 10 got close to the moon`s surface, before the eventual moon landing with Apollo 11.

Then it got a bit boring, although Tom Hanks (him again) perked things up with his "Houston, we have a problem" moment. I love that film.

This all takes me back - to the days when the Cape was Cape Kennedy, and Mission Control was at Houston which I imagined was nearby (why, I don`t know). My neighbour came back from Shetland with an American accent because he`d spent so long watching the TV coverage.

I was also confused by a Top Cat cartoon when he talked about "Cape Canaveral" - it seemed so old fashioned. (Also confusing was the cartoon being called "Boss Cat".)

All these 60s memories get quite jumbled.

Yeah didn’t even notice it at the time. Apparently Top Cat was a known food brand in the UK so they couldn’t use it.

Saw a launch from Cape Canaveral on a cruise ship a couple years ago and it was quite impressive, didn’t quite get to film it as my son nearly knocked over my cocktail and I had to prioritise

Quite excited to see how it all goes but a bit difficult to keep track with the time difference.

I would be curious to know a bit more about the manufacture and testing of the vehicles as the missions were more frequent back in the 60s/70s but obviously production capabilities have changed a lot, vehicles are a lot more advanced and testing is a lot more rigorous these days. Likely this is a factor in how frequent missions can be, but I would have thought that the private sector being involved more in the design might have sped that up a bit.

Very curious to see more about how the Lunar base will come together too and I would assume that it would be intended as a preparation for a Martian mission.

Funnily enough, quite a common line I`ve heard from Mainland Chinese here in Hong Kong is that America never went to the Moon and that China proved it. Funny thing is that the opposite is true: the Chang`e missions took high resolution pictures of the sites which showed the landing sites. One of my bosses pulled it out the other day and reałly struggled to not laugh in the guy`s face!

They do, all this pomp and ceremony to "go round the moon" when apparently decades ago we were playing buggy races on it.
How did tech regress so much between then and now?
Seriously,what utter nonsense.

Most people who do not believe we landed on the moon don`t know why we "regressed" with rocket technology.

The reason is actually more infuriating and unbelievable than you could possibly imagine.

Go find out yourself, or ask Buffy, she seems to know.

Only in the minds of the politically indoctrinated can such conspiracies exist.

In my experience, it`s only Maga nutters and Communist sympathisers that believe the moon conspiracies. In the case of the latter, it`s quite hilarious because the Communist societies have generally been terrible at innovation and rely on IP theft, which was the case with the Soviet Union and is the case with China.

How you are supposed to create a Social Utopia without having an economy to support it and necessary technological innovation is something that has always puzzled me. Particularly when the most successful countries are Social Democracies.

These loons always feel like the biggest liar`s paradox..... everybody is lying to you but trust me as I`m clearly seeing the truth that everybody else is missing. And I`ll talk to you like you are stupid while I`m doing it.

Perhaps everybody with an Astrophysics PhD signs an agreement that they`ll keep this a big secret from the stupid sheep amongst us.

Were all the Apollo missions faked or just the moon landings? Is this one legit? Have the Van Allen belts been switched off?

I don’t think it was ever a question of technology, more motivation. I’ve had the technology to go to Ibrox for 40 odd years, but I’ve been before and I’m in no rush to go back.

With space travel, the public got a bit bored and coupled with the huge expense (perhaps the oil shock of the early 70s was a factor) attention shifted to Space Stations, Space Shuttles and not doing very much at all. The Challenger and Columbia disasters didn’t help.

I don’t think the physics has changed. If you apply a constant force to a body, it accelerates. If it goes fast enough it can escape the earth’s atmosphere. Then it’s just a matter of making sure you are pointing in the right direction. It takes a lot of fuel though - they use most of it on launch – the rockets are heavy because they carry so much fuel. I think the Soviets used to go with less fuel and lighter rockets. RyanAir may adopt a similar principle.

It’s not rocket science...

What if you believe we have been to the moon and also that America isn’t bringing freedom to all?

I don’t see NASA as some big government department, hell bent on cover ups and conspiracies to mislead the public.

Although saying that, Im not as enthusiastic about it as I thought Id be, as I did love Apollo 13…
