Maybe Kane and Ngwenya are down as trialists tonight?

Ngwenya was wearing No.3 training top in his interview. Kane could of taken No.30.

Livingston listed the majority of their squad as trialists the other night, something about players can`t be registered until the 1st July, despite already being announced as signings.

One attempt Ohalloran running aimlessly with the ball, so no change there then. Hardly been in East fifes half, never mind the final third. Chalmers has probably been in the ball the most. Midfield non existent.

Pre season is about more than just fitness and game time. Its about team cohesion, confidence, willingness to get a start in first competitive game, showing folk should invest in season tickets etc…..losing 2-0 to a team two leagues below isn’t exactly inspiring…..

Glorified kick about or not. We got outplayed by East Fife. Had a chance either half, and a cross into the 6 yard box. The goalkeeper looked a Bomb scare, when he came out and started dribbling, then lost the ball, 10 yards passed the 18 yard box. The rest of the trialists, can’t see them in the team, for next season.

And I`m 100% correct. If you want to read anything into a game where we made 11 substitutions at half time then that`s up to you.

I don`t defend mediocrity FWIW.

Saying, `its only a friendly` reminds me of what has been said about Scotland in the long period since we last won a competitive match. It`s ok, it`ll be different at the euros when it`s a `real` game...

This is our first friendly though so plenty of time to improve.

What I would like to see/hear in these friendlies though is that there has been a marked change of style and we look more creative.

I gave up going to pre-season friendlies years ago. They are simply a means of attaining match fitness and that will particularly be the case if you have one within a week of starting pre-season training. The results are rarely an indicator of what`s going to happen in the season proper. The main downside tonight seems to be that Matty Todd has picked up an injury.

Nothing builds team confidence and spirit like a 2 nil gubbing by a league 2 team, hey it`s only for building fitness , not patterns of play or getting confidence in stuff worked on in training .

We never had anything like a first eleven on the park in either half. Different friendlies will be for different purposes - tonight was more about getting minutes in the legs than anything. Hopefully in future friendlies we move towards trying to get the best first eleven, maybe try out a few different formations and the performance levels will be of more importance.

Just thinking this through. First week back at training and they`ve been working them hard. As part of building fitness he decides to play East Fife on a Friday night and give more or less the whole squad game time knowing that that they have the whole weekend to recover before starting to push them again from Monday.
While not the best strategy for getting a result it seems a pretty decent one otherwise, no?

I just think a professional coaching team at this level know what they are doing more than the rabid fans in a chat room.

It may have been a glorified training session but it was still a little disappointing overall – you hope for a few more positive signs, or glimpses of your new signings. Instead we got a clear demonstration of the cumulative effect of having several weaker players or players slightly off form in your playing eleven.

We lined up with a 4-4-2/ 4-5-1 both halves, one of the forwards more wide left

First half:

Mehmet
Comrie, Young, Bene, Trialist 1
MO’H. Chalmers, Trialist 2, McLeod
Wighton, McCann

2nd half

Trialist 3
Hoggan, Fisher, Breen, Trialist 4
KRH, Hamilton, Tod, Todd

No sign of Kane, Ngwenya, Rowe. John Tod was in the stand. Wasn’t he meant to have broken his leg? I couldn’t see any sign. Who else do we have? Edit - Otoo, of course - sorry Ewan.

I noted the 2nd half team didn’t warm up pre-match but instead came out en masse for their warm up midway through the first half. The 1st half team had a substantial warm down (which I presume usually happens only the fans tend to have gone home beforehand).

I didn’t recognise any of the trialists although no. 4 could be Flynn Duffy.
Trialist 1 seemed to take a while to settle; looked better going forward
Trialist 2 started well but seemed to be blamed for the goal – a bit harshly IMO, and drifted out of the game as the Pars reverted to channelling things through Chalmers. Facially looked a little like a younger Steven Bell
Trialist 3 was quite entertaining – he liked to play the ball with his feet – there was one comical moment when he raced 20 yards from goal, didn’t clear properly then had to chase the ball out of play by the dugouts – scampering back to his line before East Fife could get a shot on the empty goal. He had one spectacular fist clear when he also managed to clean out Hammy.
Trialist 4 saw a lot of the ball, but frustratingly never got it in the box.

It’s difficult to assess any of them on 45 minutes in a pre-season friendly, particularly when you know you are only getting half a game, but none stood out for me. (To be fair, this applied to a lot of the first-teamers as well…)

Todd walked off using his jersey as a make-shift sling. Why didn’t the physio have one in his kit-bag? Ironically we had used 11 of our substitutes at that point so played a good period with 10 men. It must have been tempting to move the triallist keeper up front à la David James and give Margetts a debut – it would have been no less farcical than the rest of proceedings.

Long gone are the days when we’d go to Levenmouth and score 7 in a pre-season friendly, but the old failings are still evident – a reluctance to get forward quickly, and a reluctance to have a go. Most of our attempts at goal were on the highlights – MOH intercepting a loose clearance, then doing I’m not sure what – trying to chip the keeper? McCann being gifted the ball then doing his best with the trialist to try and lose it before McLeod dragging his shot wide. A good effort from Tod just past the post, and a wild shot from Jake. Maybe a couple of blocked efforts from MOH and KRH,

Taylor has very quick feet, but we need people in the box in the right areas – not all at the front post. He was the best of a bad bunch IMO.

They had a cash gate though – hand over a tenner and you were in – very quick. It’ll never catch on.

It may have been a glorified training session but it was still a little disappointing overall – you hope for a few more positive signs, or glimpses of your new signings. Instead we got a clear demonstration of the cumulative effect of having several weaker players or players slightly off form in your playing eleven.

We lined up with a 4-4-2/ 4-5-1 both halves, one of the forwards more wide left

First half:

Mehmet
Comrie, Young, Bene, Trialist 1
MO’H. Chalmers, Trialist 2, McLeod
Wighton, McCann

2nd half

Trialist 3
Hoggan, Fisher, Breen, Trialist 4
KRH, Hamilton, Tod, Todd
J Sutherland, T Sutherland

No sign of Kane, Ngwenya, Rowe. John Tod was in the stand. Wasn’t he meant to have broken his leg? I couldn’t see any sign. Who else do we have?

I`m only qualified to answer one of your queries.
As a first aider for around 50 years, improvisation is key.
Farting about with a sling could cause more discomfort. The shirt was quick, easy, and perfectly adequate.
The fact he did this rather than use a sling which he most likely did have in his bag showed experience.

Also, if he had to go for an X-ray, they would have to p*** about with the sling again.
The physio was spot on.

Players will be getting hammered fitness wise this week so not unsurprising to see a flat performance and not that bothered.

Be good to hear what the latest on Todd is, be a big win in itself if that turns out better than expected.

Nothing builds confidence like a 2-0 defeat , really , are we saying a defeat is acceptable, along as it is used as s training exercises.

Oops we are wrong to criticise at 2-0 defeat because the Rovers drew against the same team ,

It`s our first pre season friendly for gods sake. It`s a glorified kickabout

Yep of course, lose our best midfielder for 2-3 months but it shall all be fine and there is no reason to panic

So what`s the answer? Don`t play any friendlies? Avoid physical contact, even in training?

Go out with some attacking purpose and feckin win the game or at least have more attacking intent than Scotland in the euros

The result is actually second to building the fitness levels surely?

Honestly don’t see what the uproar is about man, first game of preseason and already a meltdown brewing. Sad state of affairs this forum has become.

McPake has come out openly admitting the players have went into that game tired, playing two different elevens each half, difficult for anyone to build momentum, it’s just topping up players minutes. Watching the highlights it looked very much like a kickabout.

Facebook memories tells me that 8 years ago East Fife went one up on us in a friendly. Ok we went on to win 2-1 but ye know just saying 😂
