 Tonight`s game
Topic Originator: wee eck

Are the traffic restrictions around town still in place? I usually travel from the south to Leys Road car park. Is it still advisable to approach EEP from the east and park on that side of the ground?

Roadworks at Bothwell Gardens roundabout (bottom of Carnegie Drive/where the Brig Chippy is/by the railway station depending on what you prefer to call it) are still there and will be for some time. Going up by Touch/Garvock and going past the ground might be quicker even if it is a longer route.

not sure how far south you start wee eck but Elgin street from Rosyth and along East port to Sinclair gardens roundabout will miss the viaduct roadworks.

M90 and come off at Pitreavie usually, 68guns. I think I`ll maybe stay on the motorway until Halbeath. Thanks for the info.

Definitely go via the Halbeath junction if coming by motorway. If coming through the town just try and avoid coming up St Margaret`s Drive. There are/were roadworks on Whitehall Road just after the roundabout at Robertson Road. They`re not bad though.

Putting a team out still more than capable of winning tonight so let’s just get the job done and hope it all turns out alright, feel they’ll be needed for Saturday rather than tonight thinking about it so maybe that’s also in mind.

I was worried last season at the amount of time out / game management Kane needed and it seems the same going into this season… Wighton the same. Huge risk going into the season relying on these guys (even more so with Kane being our number one summer target.

Wighton is permanently injured, Breen another. Kane on a 2 year deal is very concerning…looked well off it when he came on. Let’s no mention the bench and no back up keeper. Repeat of last season is definitely on the cards.

I would suspect all 3 are just being managed after long injury layoffs. It’s not a game we need to take risks. The squad involved should get the job done.

We reminder to people of how many players we had out injured last season. Can`t really complain when steps are being taken to try and prevent this again. It`s Forfar in a league cup game. Not exactly an important one.

5 at the back home to Forfar is ridiculous
Kane in centre mid.

McPake complicates it too much. 442 and we`d win this easy.

I find it baffling we signed KRH, a wide player who can`t play rwb or centre mid where he has been shoe-horned to play because he wants to play 5 at the back.

We don`t have much on the bench but maybe 2nd half we get Hamilton into midfield and then the team looks a lot better. We don`t have a left winger though mind you

Comrie
Bene
Fisher
Ngwenya

Otoo
Hamilton
Wotherspoon

McCann
Sutherland
KRH

Serious concerns about this season with what we’re serving up tonight. So negative, with no creativity and no one willing to make runs into space. Again the squad is ridiculously light as well, which is a massive worry. Hopefully Wighton and Kane are available for the league commencing. Sad thing is; the league cup could potentially bring much needed cash to the club should we qualify. Our owners don’t seem to see it that way though…

wee eck - turns out the roadworks have been lifted! (Glad I was out and noticed this rather than being at the game)

pars no 1 - if Kane was fit, surely you`d have him on the bench, even just in case we needed a goal with 15 minutes to go? And given our financial situation, this certainly is an important game!

cammypar - it`s OK, we have plenty of depth at goalkeep... ah, no wait.

buffy - the Kane fitzpl referred to was Ritchie-Hosler, surely? Or is he just anonymous tonight?

3 at the back hasn`t worked for a while now; I`m not sure why McPake and McKay can`t see it. Hopefully the change to a 4 helps us turn it around

To be fair we have looked the better team but we struggle to create in the final third due to shape and tactics. Otto needs to be in midfield, such a waste in defence. We switched to a back four towards the end of the first half. We look way short on depth and quality. Going to be a very tough season ahead, we are going to be 6/7 at best on tonight’s showing. Badly need some quality loans in before the end of the window.

Da da daaaaaaa

Mens tennis singles. Fabulous sport with rarely a bad match. Carlos Alcaraz, just a couple of months into being 21 and already has 4 slams playing an entertaining swashbuckling style of tennis, and rarely without a smile on his face. Loads of other entertaining players on tour too.

Worth a look perhaps if you grow weary of football.

I would be getting McPake out and doing all to get McCabe in.

This is turgid. The squad is done. We are no unlucky with injuries we are signing boys who have track records.

Breen, Wighton, O’Halloran, Kane

Shambles

Who thought bringing in Wotherspoon was a good idea. He`s been muck. No point showing for the baw all the time and passing it out the park or lumping up to the invisible man. Be back in the seaside league again unless massive improvement.

Not at the game tonight. But reports from friends who are there say we’ve not been in the game!! It doesn’t bode well for the start of the league season. No Chris Kane tonight,is his fitness going to be an issue throughout the season. Ditto with Wighton. I’ve always thought that O’Halloran was made of chocolate. He must be one of our top earners and he has never kicked a ball for us. I think Mehmet is also on decent money?? How we haven’t signed someone to seriously challenge him is a disgrace. The season has just started and it’s already looking like it’s going to be a hard shift.

It’s all comes down to not improving the squad which a blind man could blatantly see was required.
I called it weeks ago this squad will go down if it’s not seriously improved, half the team is made of chocolate as well.
We have 5/6 players that aren’t championship level we signed of multi year deals so are stuck with them this season as well

We have probably identified targets just waiting on them being injured before we make our move.

McPake has not improved us one jot, he’s full of contradictions.

League one - we won the league but we were dross
Last year football was crap but that was Mcpkaes style yes we also had injuries.

This year rotten so far, McPake couldn’t attract flies to shi*te

His love affair for Dundee also annoys me always loves to mention them.

He also said he wanted to loan players with the intention of them coming to us, show them what they could have eg Mochrie, Moffat but then doesn’t even consider them.

Far too much deadwood at the club including McPake

I`m not even surprised. We kept the same lot who almost got us relegated last year and have signed a guy who couldn`t play for 6 months and has struggled to play this season already. We haven`t even come close to getting someone even in the same league as Edwards. We keep with the 5 at the back. We keep on getting told one thing from the powers above and the product on the park seems to be the opposite.

Plan A this season was to improve courtesy of not having as many injuries by the looks of it.

Theres a chronic lack of invest, or should I say correct investment. What wage money mcpake has had he’s wasted a large chunk, we’re now stuck with number of high earning players who are either not good enough or injury prone and will struggle to string any sort of run of games together.

Mcpake dug himself out of a hole last season, do I think if we get off to a poor start he can do it again? I’m not sure. His tactics are terrible and the worst thing is he doesn’t even sign players to play that system!

We are such a poor watch at the best of times, you can hack getting beat if we gave it a go, but we’ve not even done that tonight.

The players and staff need to take a proper look at themselves, that was nothing short of an utter disgrace and the worst pars performance I’ve seen I a long time.

Mcpake did change the shape and made the correct subs in my opinion however he absolutely carries the can for that. I would say though that performance is on the players I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many players drop an absolute stinker at the same time.

Didn’t win a header all game. Didn’t win a tackle. Forfar didn’t have to get out of second gear.

Don’t care how skint we are we should never accept that standard of performance.

Also make no apologies for saying that Deniz Mehmet should be absolutely no where near this football club. I’d seen enough two seasons ago, he faced about one shot a game in the seaside league and decide that makes up from what we seen when he first came in??? We need two keepers ahead of him never mind scraping to find a back up for the guy.

There is a long list of players that are nowhere near good enough. Along with a manager who insists on playing a drab style of football.

Mehmet - extended contract, WTF
Conrie - bang average
Ngenya - every bit as bad as thistle fans said he was
Bene - near his sell by date
Otoo - the only asset on the pitch and a very good player who could get a lot better
Fisher - decent
Breen - missing more than he plays but decent
Charmers - I have no words
Hamilton - decent
KRH - league 1 standard, not good enough for championship
Weatherspoon - the only player that looks like he has a clue going forward
Ohalloran - no words
McCann - good lord he is rotten, no instinct or clue where to go and when
Tod - not ready, has a chance
Sutherland - will be a natural goal scorer but not ready
Kane - the only other player it’s half a clue going forward
Wighton - whoever decided to extend his contract needs locking up

Are we that bad of a prospect that these are the best or only players we can attract, we don’t have money to throw around but still a reasonable budget.

That squad will take us down, now I need a break away from watching that shower.

That’s as bad as it’s been under Mcpake tonight, seriously concerning from the word go playing 5 at the back at home against Forfar.

These games are a chance to change it up, have a go and play some attacking football and see where we go.

KRH playing central midfield and no width to the team is just absolutely poor. Wotherspoon tried to hard at some points. Mehmet, same old, same old. McCann again, not good enough. Don’t care what anybody says.

If Mcpake don’t get the backing and the signings through the door we’re in for a long long season and that’s a fact.

Usually try and be constructive where I can but that truly was abysmal.

Whole performance was just lethargic, couldn’t get past a player, win a header, even play a pass.

I’ve never seen Comrie have that bad a game before. Mehmet had one of his usual shockers but the first goal I think Otoo was partly to blame, basically got skinned twice by the winger with ease the get the ball in the box.

Person I feel bad for is Sutherland and if I was him would be absolutely fuming, an opportunity to start and we turn up with that garbage.

FWIW I’m shocked folk are calling out Chalmers in this game, he came on and was the only one that was playing balls forward and trying to do something.

O’Halleron as well, a lot of running with no meaningful output but the effort was there unlike any of the others.

This is a tough one to swallow, we have a great group in this competition and now in major bother of qualifying from it.

The whole start of the season as well has been tainted by poor recruitment, performances in preseason and tonight.

For those at Spartans and seen the first half, they probably wouldn’t be that surprised.

Just want to add as well, we weren’t playing five at the back so not sure where that’s coming from?

Ngwenya - not being critical of his play but he looks purely a defensive full-back so why was McPake so keen to sign him when his system is based on full backs getting forward to provide the width.

So many miles off it tonight, Wotherspoon for me still has plenty to offer but he needs to be doing it around the opposition box not on the half-way line.

McCann never seen the ball to feet once in the 1st half, and Sutherland was only able to get the ball when he went wide left again that`s not a criticism of them.

The system might work at the top level but we don`t have the players for it, it`s so easy to defend against when you aren`t able to play a penetrating ball or have any runners.
You really could go on all night, I`m hoping McPake hints at needing funds because everything is screaming that we are way short.

If he isnt being backed by the board, he should be sat down with Cook at this very minute saying “if you dont back me, I walk tomorrow”.

If he is being back by the board, he really needs to up his game, or he should be gone 3 games into the league season.

Zero positives and zero pass marks from tonight’s game. It’s going to be a very long season based on that. With our lack of activity so far, I was already dreading f this season but still expected us to comfortably defeat Forfar tonight. Forfar were poor and we gifted them two goals - both poor from Mehmet. We had zero threat going forward and it makes me wonder why we haven’t brought in any wide players yet. Hopefully our new keeper is worth the wait as well… There’s a reason Mehmet has never been a number one at any other club.

Credit to Forfar for the win, but for anyone not at the game it`s worth clarifying - they did not play a blinding once-a-season game against us. They looked exactly as I expected, a pretty average part-time lower league team, albeit a very organised one. However we made them seem so much better than that tonight. It could and probably should have been 3 if not for a good challenge by Fisher near the end.

Mehmet had a poor game and was at fault for the second, but as has been pointed out the first would never have happened if Otoo hadn`t been skinned down the left. To the fans sarcastically cheering when Mehmet made a couple of catches later in the game - really? He didn`t have a good night, but he`s your own keeper. Maybe save that for the opposition.

Credit to Wotherspoon, Otoo, Chalmers and MOH for looking for the ball and at least trying to play forward. Chalmers in particular when he came on.

However I`m afraid my patience is out with McPake and the utterly turgid, inspid football that we play under him. We barely threated tonight and looked lost on the ball. Between the tactics, the style of play and the constantly playing guys out of position to suite a rigid system, I`m done. This season looks like being brutal under him and we will spend it looking up the table. For that reason I will not be buying a season ticket and will limit the number of Saturdays that I expose myself to it.

Otoo got rinsed then Mehmet proceeded to flap at the cross putting into their players path, then fumbled the shot that he tried to save…….

Can’t wait to hear McPakes’ verdict on tonight’s performance.

Absolutely brutal from start to finish, no game plan at all, players look like they don’t have a clue what to do with that ball.

Otoo out of position, KRH wasted in central midfield. Get rid of this 3 at the back as it doesn’t work and hasn’t for some time.

What’s the script with Kane? Sign a striker for 2 years who can’t seem to get himself fit.

No depth in the squad at all.

Clearly don’t practice passing and controlling drills, passing was woeful tonight and that’s being kind.

Embarrassing stuff.

I’m afraid the warning signs have been there for quite a while now.

Club losing £1 million and losses this year will be similar. What has that money gone on ?

Owners not willing to suffer the same losses, which is understandable, so the purse strings are much tighter now. The result is hardly any signings made and a squad very light in numbers.

Pre-season friendlies were worrying but some chose to ignore the performances.

Injuries already starting to mount. It tends to be the same players. Another worry.

A 3-0 win over Spartans certainly flattered us. Again, some chose to ignore the performance.

Tonight’s performance would suggest that something is rotten in the state of Denmark?

It’s going to be a long season.

That performance was as bad as some of our displays in the late 70s. I have tolerated Mcpake’s style of football for two seasons but it is increasingly painful and joyless .
The game was played at a slow pace , there was a complete lack of urgency on our part and movement off the ball. Forfar deserved to win but we should not be losing at EEP to a team two leagues below us who didnt even need to play well to beat us.

That was very poor tonight, Forfar were better than us all over the park.

Pass marks for Otoo, Wotherspoon, O`Halloran and Chalmers but everyone else was brutal.

Comrie and Benedictus looked well off the pace tonight, so slow, beat for pace a number of times. Chris Hamilton isn`t really good enough to play in midfield. He`s actually better at Centre Back but too small to play there. Kane Richie Hosler also isn`t good enough, one decent game last season but Jakubiak made him look good in that game. Ngwenya is never a Championship player. We`ve got nothing up front. If we had managed to get a decent ball into the box, there was no way any of our players were going to win it against proper men.

I hate to say it but unless decent signings (and I can`t see it) are made that improve the first team, I can see us going down.

The new owners seem to be putting the first team together on a shoestring. I thought the squad 2 seasons ago was small and we were lucky to get through the season with hardly any injuries, that came back to bite us last year, and I can see this year being as bad.

When you look back to the squad we had when Stevie Crawford left, that was better than we have now, every year the squad looks worse. The level of entertainment been served up is awful as well.

I`m not very impressed by the way the club is being run, and I don`t think the fans have the patience to see a long terms plan come to fruition

tbf I can understand sticking to a back 5 tonight if that`s the way we`re set up for this season. The players need to learn the system as much as possible.

However if it`s not working against ****** Forfar then it`s not going to work against the Championship teams.

With Edwards being away I can`t see any reason that we have to play with wingbacks, especially when we constantly have to have players out of position. Can Bene only play in a back 5? What`s the thinking there?

KRH at wing back or centre mid is absolute nonsense btw

Oh and Hamilton was CB on Sat, we kept a clean sheet, tonight he`s in midfield, Otoo gets put CB and gets rinsed. What is going on?

We really need to ditch this 5 at the back and go with a 4.

Mehmet was a decent keeper in league one but that’s his level, proved the season we got relegated he isn’t championship quality and it showed again last season. We really need a new number 1 amongst other areas, left back being one of them Ngwenya isn’t convincing me at all, at one point he was playing centre forward?? and defensively looks all over the shop.

Although we all agree it was a honking performance there seems to be some disagreement over whether we were playing 5 at the back or 4. I thought it was 4 with Fisher and Bene between Comrie and Ngwenya with Otoo and Hammy in midfield with Wotherspoon. KRH seemed to be more on the wing than on Saturday.

To be honest when every player performs below par it doesn`t really matter what formation you play. I can`t remember seeing so many misplaced, underhit or overhit passes and so many missed headers or tackles in one game as I saw tonight. I know some players are more demonstrative than others but Wotherspoon seemed the only one visibly frustrated by his own mistakes. Of the starting XI the only one I would give pass marks to was Sutherland who never gave up but his frustration usually ended up with him chasing lost causes. The subs did inject a bit more energy and effort but it was too little too late.

The second goal was 100% Mehmet`s fault but I wouldn`t blame him for the first. It was a wicked cross after the winger skinned Otoo and a decent save from the initial shot but the ball fell kindly for the Forfar player who smashed it into the net.

There`s also disagreement over whether McPake is misusing the resources at his disposal or whether the board is depriving him of the resources he needs. I think the jury`s still out on that one.

The shambles at the turnstiles wasn`t confined to the Norrie. I only got in to the South Stand at the third turnstile I tried.

Agree with that doesn’t matter what formation we use , if no one turns up then we’ll get beat regardless. We always look at our best with a back 4, personally don’t see what good the 5 is but that’s for the manager to decide. Boring slow passive football is now on the cards 3 seasons on the trot, and with our top summer signing picking up injuries all the time, can’t see where the goals are coming from, yet again been an issue for 3 seasons now and never been addressed yet

We played 5 at the back until they scored the first goal.

During the warm up Ngenywa Otoo bene Fisher and Comrie were in a line doing headers.

At 0-1 he moved KRH out to the right and otto into midfield for a 451.

I think the most worrying thing is there going to be an Incentive for players to play well. Regardless most will be starting week in week out, as we don’t have the squad to drop players, even if they play badly, except maybe, 2 or 3, changes. With no competition for places. We need 3 or 4 in, badly. Memhet is a liability at the back. If this is our style going forward, playing from the back, we are going to concede silly goals, And as for another goalkeeper, it’s looking like an unknown from somewhere, another Max little type player, who won’t be good enough to even compete for the number 1 spot. Another bench warmer, to make up the numbers.

We never played 5 at the back, we played 3 at the back with Comrie and Ngwenya on the wings.

I agree the lack of competition for places is a real worry.

It was just the attitude for me, this was only the second game of the season, first game at EEP and they didn’t look bothered in the slightest, and whenever the ball was lost they just stood and felt sorry for themselves.

There’s no excuse for that, they come out in their tracksuit tops looking all professional, then out comes the awesome away top, and then we get served that.

Agree with the poster as well, Forfar weren’t bringing up trees with their performance, tall physical and well set up, and we were snookered by it for 90mins.

Thought I’d be better having slept on it but it was that bad it has planted a lot of seeds of doubt for the season ahead. I’m expecting a big performance on Saturday.

So after listening to mcpake from last night saying senior players were "put to shame" by the younger ones. Ultimately as a manager you live and die with your decisions on who to keep around.

If you look at this seasons squad we have offered deals to players who have got us relegated already from this league and weren`t too far away from the same accolade last year. Wighton, breen and kane both don`t seem fit enough to put a run of games together couple this with the decision to run with a small squad you`re just asking for trouble. We also have no back up goalkeeper to a keeper in Mehmet who looks overweight this season and isn`t good enough.

Mcpake got a lot of loose leads after winning league 1 but after a shocking season last year the run up to Christmas will be massive for him. If we are lingering around the foot of the table or propping up all the others we won`t get the fans through the door it`s as simple as that and after making a 1m loss we really can`t loose any source of income.

It`s all good putting down an astro with a few cabins around it but we also need investment on the pitch last night shows that. We keep hearing things from the BOD but in reality we don`t seem up to the task on it. This was a cup the BOD targeted as a valuable source of income and it seems like we will fall at the first hurdle. So where do we go from here, Scottish cup ? Where we will struggle to get past lower league opposition like we have in this competition never mind getting a glamorous tie against the big boys.

Mcpake really needs to change it up in terms of tactics it`s already going to be a long slog of a season let`s not make it even longer. Change the system or it might mean a change of management.

c'mon the pars

That was a very concerning performance.

McPake deserves plenty of stick for starting with a back 5 with both wing backs are out and out full backs, hardly a surprise we had no threat. It`s going to be a very long painful season if that is the game plan.

The players also deserve criticism, very few offered anything. KRH was pretty active without much joy, Wotherspoon also tried and showed some flashes but didn`t create anything. For all their faults, Chalmers and O`Halloran gave us a bit of an improvement, but too little too late. I know it`s only 1 game, but McCann and Sutherland didn`t look like they`ll form much of a partnership, probably needs to be 1 of them beside Wighton/Kane - but again with their injury record, another concern.

Saturday needs to be a massive improvement.

I was considering getting a season ticket, I was 50/50 on the idea, as I will miss a lot of games. My experience last night has put me off the idea. On and off the park there was a lack of professionalism. No ticket kiosk in operation, so had to buy it off the shoddy website, while waiting in a queue at the Norrie snaking up the side of the Main Stand. At 19.40 someone finally got the gumption to open up a second turnstile, and the only steward that seems local had to try and tell the guy how to search bags at the turnstile.

I`m not sure where they are getting the stewards as well. I used to be a steward back in the 90s and we were all local, well trained staff. Surely they could do this again. I`m also hoping these stewards are legally entitled to work here and not being exploited by gang masters.

The board seriously needs to give themselves a shake. The whole experience of visiting East End Park is not good

I wasn`t shocked ,surprised or even angry last night that wasn`t a one of performance at East End, Like folk have said there actually isn`t any pleasure in going to East End and it`s been like that for years.

The standard of football is shocking I said to the person i sit with how do you encourage youngsters along to East End to sit through that.

Dodging seagulls for 90 minutes as well can they not at least try and do something about it.

I`ve got the season ticket and also travel to all away games but if that`s the football we are going to be serving then this is the first time I`ll consider other options.

The worst thing about this situation is I don`t see how we get out of it the extra signings we require is just not happening.

Sad times to be a pars fan

The worst thing is, instead of freezing the season ticket prices (like most other clubs did) we put the prices up.

For what? They have a hard neck to charge fans extra for relegation candidates in the championship. Fleecing fans yet again.

There is no two ways about it. Someone will pay for the results on the park. It will either be McPake or the board. The result and overall performance last night just isn’t acceptable for what we have to pay.

As a club we’ve been taken backwards since the take over. On and off the park. We are a total laughing stock. Everywhere you look on social media, people can’t believe how bad we are.

Forfar’s first goal came from a long goal kick ( albeit with some good play from the winger in between) . The guy who won the flick on also the guy who hammered it into the net.

Second goal came from us trying to play out from the back, Mehmet passing straight to them.

But at least we’re trying to play “ the right way”. So that’s good.

We are desperately needing reinforcements, the board need to do something. This can’t go on.

We are severely weaker than last season and that was horrific.

As far as i can make out and correct me if I’m wrong.

Keeper wise we are weaker in terms of only have one since Little was released.

Defensively we are miles weaker having lost Fagan-Walcott, Welch-Hayes and Edwards (who all were first choice second half of season) and only brought in Ngwenya (who looks miles off it in every aspect)

Midfield Allan out and Wotherspoon in as a replacement.

Attacking I would say we are shocking. Kane obviously loan into permanent but he’s likely to miss more than he’ll play, Wighton again another injury and will again no doubt miss more than he’ll play, McCann is McCann he’ll play amazing one week and not show up for the next 9/10 games and Sutherland is just a young lad who I believe will become a key player for us in the years to come but compared to last season in the attacking sense we have lost Moffat, Summers (who wasn’t all that) and Jakubiak. So although they weren’t outstanding it gave us options.

Now realistically at the moment we can have KRH on the right if we choose, McCann or Sutherland upfront and on the left.

We are so weaker than last season and that is a massive worry.

I was all set to come through to Dunfermline last night as I fancied taking in the game. Was thinking lets see what we`re about this season as a season ticket purchase was pretty much riding on it. I didn`t enjoy it last year - both the football and the EEP experience. I am so glad now I had a last minute change of heart. Going by the above comments I think I`ll keep my hard earned money. We`ll be heading straight back down if we continue to sign "sick notes" to an already thin squad. Major surgery required (not going to happen) but we start with McPake. Clearly he needs to learn Plan Bs. They are boring to watch as it is.

It`s odd hearing people complain about investing in the academy for long term sustainability but then also mention players who have come through the academy. I get that it`s frustrating not getting players in but the academy money is now spent so there`s no point thinking about it. The question is how can we support the club to find better players? The only hope right now appears to be some loans.

Aye, it was absolute mince last night, but it did look like we were using it as a semi-friendly. There was no real attempt to chase the game in the second half, in a way that surely would never happen in a league game. I`d have been absolutely raging if we`d lost a league game like that, but was just a bit miffed that we were poor last night. I`ve been quite hard on McPake over the last 8 months or so, but I`m prepared to make some allowance for that one, especially since we maybe suffered last year by having such a hard first friendly and a derby in the first league cup game.

As to the system we played, I agree with those saying it was a back 3 initially but changed to 4 at the back in the middle of the first half. And positions of players seemed to change quite a lot, as might happen when you want to try things out.

The main worry for me is that we insisted on playing that mind-numbing passy rubbish again, and presumably have worked on this in pre-season. A few times, it looked like we were scared to put the ball in the box. So many times we just wanted to play some perfect pass to open up a defence and it never came close to happening. However, I`ll give credit to Forfar for being well organised.

I was more annoyed about the shambles to get in than the game its self. I specifically checked the website before the game and it said tickets could be bought at the portacabin, yet arrived there and found it closed and no notice as to where to go. Why are we consistently so bad at doing the most basic thing of getting people into the ground? I had enough time to make it in on time, but for it to take 20 minutes from arriving at the ground at 7.20 to getting in is really poor. It`s fundamental to watching a game and it just happens far too often. Ultimately, this is David Cook`s responsibility - I don`t like naming anyone, but it`s such a fundamental thing and he, personally, must either do better or make sure that others do better because it is not acceptable.

We shouldn’t be treating it as a semi-friendly, we’ve already came out and said we are looking for a long run in this competition.

Players looked off the pace last night and there was zero movement at the top and of the pitch.

Possibly the worst I’ve seen Comrie play, he was playing RWB and never ran in behind once, always came short. One moment in the first half Fisher was looking to pass down the channel but Comrie never made the run. No point playing wing backs if they don’t run in behind.

The whole system consists of putting square pegs in round holes.

I`ve said before that it`s a joke that a full-time club in the Championship didn`t have a substitute keeper on the bench. I also thought it was a joke that we didn`t have our own training facility until recently. I don`t see them as alternatives

Got to agree with RMGpar’s Forfar mates assessment on us. Not once that I can think of did a Pars player outpace or get in behind a Forfar player and they in all brutal honesty were a well organised bunch of part timers with a couple of beefers in there as well.

There were others but for the level that OHalloran has played at and the salary he is on he tried but did not get past the left back once.

A truly shocking performance that seems to sum our club up at the moment and for the last while. Blame whoever we like, there is blame to be apportioned at all levels but for which I believe the manger will carry the can.

For instance we have seen enough of McCann up top to know he will never be a striker with a strikers instinct, there must be lower level players in the English minor leagues that would be worth half the shot he has had, Falkirk regularly picked up unknown strikers sometimes on loan from obscurity that come up and gill there boots in Scotland (Lyle Taylor)Why are we so unattractive as a club to players, which I think we are.

Whether you know the actual salary or not, I`d say its quite safe to assume it will be a lot higher than the average Forfar player.

I just don’t think we have the contacts. We gave facilities to wotherspoon as he asked and we are central Scotland club while he weighted up his options across the country.

Even Walcott from Cardiff had been on loan at Dundee although was injured. But for every Walcott there’s a Benjamin. I thought Moffat and summers were very meh and rarely contributed last season. Some of the loans were out of pure desperation too.

If we’re relaying on the young raw loans to bring us on this season we’ll be disappointed. If we bring in 5 maybe 1 will be able to hit the ground running and contribute on any semi consistent basis. Who’s to say they will even fit into the formation mcpake wants? It’s not a prerequisite for signing players it seems

Meanwhile we’ll be going for tried and tested strategy of McCann upfront as wighton and Kane are made of chocolate. As per every other chance he’s had before, this will fail and we’ll continue to look dodgy at the back and weak upfront.

The post below replying to me is by one of .nets finest champions of mediocrity!

Strikers like Brad Holmes?

I`ve said it before and I`ll say it again. We could have brian Graham up front and he wouldn`t score many for us.

It`s the system and coaching not the players.

Exactly my point weemike, they dig out Lyle Taylor we dig out Brad Holmes. They either do better homework or are a more attractive option.

When was Lyle Taylor at Falkirk? 6, 7, 8 seasons ago? Why not pick Dennon Lewis, or Rueben Sammut?

That was pretty bad, but not totally unexpected.

It was largely self-inflicted, and although we had a lot of possession we never really looked like we were the better team, which is concerning. And we’ve probably blown a good chance to progress.

I think it started as a 3-4-2-1; from Saturday Otoo dropped back to replace Breen; Hamilton moved forward to midfield as the ball-winner; Bene came back to the heart of defence. Chalmers was dropped, KRH came into the middle as playmaker and Taylor started up front.

Half-way through the half, we changed to a 4-5-1. Otoo moved back to midfield, KRH went to the right, Taylor to the left and McCann ended up as the striker. So at least we made a change, it just didn’t work any better.

We made a triple sub – on came Tod and Chalmers for Otoo and Hammy; KRH went to the left, Taylor more central and MOH on the right with McCann going off.

Generally I am impressed with how organised most teams are and how everyone seems to know their roles and where they should be and what they should be doing almost without thinking. I assume this is the result of hours spent on the training pitch. However this predisposes against spontaneity (and hence excitement). And last night we also gave the impression of players being on different wavelengths.

To give one example – in the first half KRH had the ball, McCann made a run, but the ball never came immediately, so he stopped, at which point the pass was made. I think this is down to the management philosophy. Our first instinct now is to keep possession, not to attack, which is fine if you are any good at it, but yesterday we weren’t – we seemed intent on hitting passes firmly, but often not in the right direction. It`s as if goals are not a priority, but a by-product.

Later on Chalmers showed more urgency than I’ve ever seen from him – getting the ball forward quickly, but the quality of delivery from then on was poor, and the positioning of the people in the box seemed suspect. I had hoped that the acquisition of Kane and perhaps even Wotherspoon would help our forward play, but there is little evidence so far.

We did create some decent chances – a very good save from McCann, a decent one from KRH, Bene should have scored from Spoony’s cross and Comrie might have done better with his chance. And Spoony and Otoo came close. Two bad goals given away – maybe one of those things, but against a Division 2 team you would still hope to be able to score 3 if required.

I know you have the choice between picking the players to suit the system, or picking the system to suit the players and a good manager should be able to do both, IMO. What we seem to have is square pegs being forced into round holes, as Ahoy!Ahoy! has already said.

Not sure what happened with the ticketing – my regular seat was allegedly not for sale, but it sat empty. And why were most of the turnstyles closed?

Just to finish:

I think we’re all beginning to lose patience; I note Gareth Southgate may be looking for a job, but I’m not sure he’d be any better…

Why TF does he persist playing with three at the back it does nothing for us, we have two good dcm`s in otoo and Hamilton to cover a back four. Play a 4231 it would be ten times better and. More effective for the players we have.

We played with two CBs after they scored. It didn`t improve things.

Spot on 4231 would work ideal in theory with the players we have.

I think most people can see that except McPake. I genuinely think the reason he persists with a back 3 is to accommodate Bene, he looks well off the pace since his injury last season.

I think at the end of the day, we shouldn`t be losing games at home to part-time teams two leagues below. That`s poor by anyone`s standards. There is a long season ahead, and it`s going to be a challenging league.

A bit of soul searching is needed for some of the players, I think. One swallow doesn`t make a summer, so Saturday will be a big game. I always think you have to start how you mean to go on. We never got started.

Yes and I would say it worked because we had other players who fit into the system.

Now last night we move Otoo in the defence, Hosler into centre mid when it would of made more sense to play a back 4, keep Otoo in midfield and Holser on the right.

Mehmet
Comrie Fisher Bene Ngwenya
Hamilton Otoo
Hosler Wotherspoon McCann
Sutherland

(Rotate McCann and Sutherland)

I think that line up last night would have been a better solution, I just think he doesn’t trust Bene in a back 4 and sacrifices other players to accommodate him.

Just my personal view on it.

I think he plays 3 at the back because he was a center half himself and it makes life easier for the CB`s if there is a spare man.

The problem is that man comes from somewhere, and by playing wingbacks, you only really have 1 man out wide. We need 4 at the back with 2 wingers from midfield with overlapping wing backs.

1 up top and 5 in midfield or a classic 4-4-2.

5 in midfield probably keeps it tight, but then we are back to low scoring as the 1 up top is isolated.

There is no happy medium, but sacrificing a forward-thinking player for a CB is the wrong way to go. Unless your CB has a license to roam forward with the ball, but everyone has to move up at the same time

I agree, weemike. Wing backs have to be exceptional players with the defensive qualities of a full back and the attacking qualities of a winger. There aren`t many of those around.

What’s frustrating is, on paper, this league is as open as it has been in years where the majority of the teams will have an eye on promotion chances.

It’s a great opportunity for us to do something this season, but instead there’s a lot of pessimism given the lack of signings and performances. Make no mistake Forfar was honking, for those at Spartans, it wasn’t much better.

This season is going to be the closest Championship in a while I suspect.

There’s no BIG fish this season if you like and I can see it being a 3 horse race, unfortunately I don’t see us being involved.

Everyone has strengthened and will be having a go.

I think it’ll be between Rovers, Partick, Ayr for Champions.

I`d possible add Falkirk to that list. Will be interesting to see how their promotion bounce goes compared to ours.

I did think about them but didn’t add them for that very reason. We already know Rovers, Partick and Ayr are going to be better, their promotion bounce could go either way and time will tell.
