Makes sense to bring McKenna and Gilmour in where we are likely to have more of the ball. Gannon-Doak obviously is a no trainer in a game where we`ll need to break down a stubborn defence. I`d have changed up the strikers myself but hopefully Bowie and Hirst get a decent amount of minutes rather than a token few minutes at the end.

Last 20 qualifiers in group stages (WC 2022, Euros 2024, WC 2026):
P20, W13, D5, L2.
For the record, I don`t think we`ll qualify for the World Cup but I also don`t think there`s a better option out there who would increase our chances.

Clarkโs come in and stopped the cap handout parade and actually built a proper squad with a clear idea behind it. Folk forget we went dacades without qualifying for a euros , and heโs done it twice on the spin. Performances at the finals havenโt been what weโd all want, but at least weโre there. That in itself is progress compared to the revolving door of failures we had before. And I was at every game of both euros finals the performance wasn`t great but still progress.
Hanley was excellent in Copenhagen and there are folk sitting behind keyboards questioning him who clearly donโt watch the game properly.
Wouldโve bitten your hand off for 4 points from this camp and thought we looked organised in both matches. Shows Clark can set us up different ways and the players buy into it.
Massive October coming up, but I fancy us at Hampden with the crowd right behind them.

His loyalty can be frustrating, we go into future games/campaigns risking "no experience" when we have chances to build experience in guys like Lennon Miller but we end up seeing Kenny Mclean and running guys like mctominay/mcginn into the ground by asking them to play 90 mins every game.

Our midfield 5 last night was:
McGinn (30 years old)
McTominay (28 years old)
Ferguson (26 years old)
Gilmour (24 years old)
Gannon Doak (19 years old)
I don`t think there`s any massive worry about them all retiring en masse due to old age and leaving 19-year old Lennon Miller as the elder statesman marshalling round a bunch of kids.
Also, it`s Clarke`s job to get results now. At no point (until maybe the 90th minute when Miller came on) were we guaranteed to win last night. Belarus always had some semblance of attacking threat.
If he brought on an inexperienced player with 15 minutes to go, he makes a mistake, it goes 2-1 and then we end up in panic mode and draw 2-2, there are not many people who would be looking at the silver lining of us blooding a youngster, which could yield dividends over the next couple of World Cup campaigns.
The Nations League or friendlies are better places to integrate young/new players for the first time - as we did with 21 year old Max Johnston, who started last night.

Whilst I agree with most of that there is no doubt Clarke has been massively helped with the Euros now having 50% more teams in it compared to his predecessors. When we qualified in 92 and 96 there were only 8 and 16 teams who qualified and now we are at 24. Under the current criteria we would have qualified more under previous managers?

Heโs hardly running them into the ground though, is he?
Letโs be honest, if heโd started all the โno experienceโ and weโd taken a hiding last night, the pitchforks wouldโve been out before the final whistle. People need to accept where the Scotland team is at the minute and just enjoy the fact weโre having a bit of success and the recent results have put us in a great position to qualify for another major finals.
Miller came on and looked sharp, fair enough, but it was only a cameo. Ferguson had to bide his time before breaking in and heโs all the better for it. Thereโs nothing wrong with easing players in rather than chucking them into the deep end just to apese the armchair managers.

Great post Cammy and totally agree, however I would like to pick out this part.
As someone who probably hasnโt missed a home game in 15 years (Covid seasons aside), then I can honestly say that the Hampden Roar and the crowd being right behind them, is as big a myth as the Loch Ness Monster mate.
Time and time and time again, Hampden is like a library, full of lots of negative loan voices. Why the SFA have never put together a singing section or worked at improving the atmosphere is beyond me. Yes, there are exceptions (the Spain game as an example) but thatโs not the norm in my eyes.

Totally agree Buster. Atmosphere at Hampden has been poor for years. There will be occasional moments against the bigger teams if we`re doing well, Spain, England, but more often than not it`s flat.

I think Hampden is no different from anywhere else in terms of the mood of the crowd. Its all down to the team. If the players are up for it and playing with purpose, the atmosphere can be fantastic.
At the Greece game, you could sense the deflation in the crowd when the team was announced. You could see we were beat after the first 10 minutes and the crowd basically didn`t make a peep after the national anthem. I think the roar is still there, but you have to give them something to shout about.

Running track was always there at the old Hampden, didn`t stop the great roar at games, especially at the "Rangers " end.
New stadium stopped the "water" falls and the dust storm from the ash!

The Stadium in Copenhagen last week was really impressive, close to pitch with steep stands etc but didnt feel "intimidating" or particularly loud even though was sold out.
prospecive view of how hampden could change based on recent Stuttgart (usual questions to who funds it etc given this cost c 140m euro )

The SFA had an opportunity to do this a few years back (along with the dodgy dealings with Queens Park and Lesser Hampden.) They opted to keep Hampden which is a terrible place to watch football imo.
I`d rather just move games depending on the opponent to a club stadium but that would cause another uproar as well.

Best Scotland games i`ve been at for atmosphere were both at Parkhead, think it was Latvia during redevelopment and maybe Faroe Islands more recently (cannot remember why that was moved?). Both were miles ahead of any experience i`ve had at Hampden.
Best atmosphere I have ever been in, for a Scotland game, was the ROI game at Parkhesd when Shaun Maloney scored that goal. The place was absolutely bouncing all night.

I was at that one, but hard to beat the 3-1 win over Spain when Dalglish curled one in from the right hand side into the top bin

Scotland v Czechoslovakia 1973 qualifying for the 74 World Cup. Iโve never heard noise like that following Joe Jordanโs goal. You couldnโt see the pitch for 10 minutes after because of all the stour created.

The Ireland game was great as well, lovely corner kick routine.
Sadly a boy died about 20 metres away from us on the way out of the game, thats my abiding memory from that night :-(

The Faroes game was moved as Robbie Williams was at Hampden.
The other recent games at Ibrox and Parkhead were because of the Commonwealth Games using Hampden.

Yeah, that was a very special night, left L/gelly midday, after picking up my future wife from Cameron Bridge Hospital, she had been admitted with meningitis.
Must have been love as she`s still with me 52yrs later!โค๏ธ

Hampden is pretty poor but donโt think itโs to blame for atmosphere, itโs simply different times and different generations. There is the expectation of instant gratification and probably demand for more entertainment (which while fair is in short supply at Hampden). The turn out and shout yourself hoarse for a couple hours generation is aging out.

Agreed. There was a drunk guy hanging over the stanchion beside me on the terracing, how he had got into the ground I have no idea. He had been virtually unconscious with drink from the start of the match and hadn`t seen any of the actions, but when Jordan scored he threw his hands in the air, shouted "Ya Beauty!" then collapsed again over the stanchion. He might still be there.
