Big call on that side, no real out ball with Doak missing and Hickey is much better than Patterson defensively IMO.

Worried that it`s all going to fall apart which would be a real shame seeing how invigorated the nation is about the world cup. I`m hoping that Morocco will underestimate us and that our players perform like they can and do for their club sides.

We`re just not all that good are we? Like Wee Eck says we`re ranked 42nd. Hatai are ranked 83rd and you could see th difference between us and them. Morocco look like they could go up another fear or two if they want. I sincerely hope I come back on later to eat my words but it beggars belief that we gave Steve Clarke another four years. Turning up just to make up the numbers is only worthwhile if you are one of the blessed few that can afford to go for a booze fueled holiday.

Wrong tactics, playing for a draw against a team with skill, and carthouse Hanley fails again.
Why do we approach so negatively.
We are lucky to only be one down, let`s get some attacking flair, and try.
This is why the manager has been good to get us here, but also very lucky, and in the finals the luck runs out.
However it`s only 1 down, and with change of tactics, and teams who knows.

We just donβt have any conviction, or anyone that can make anything happen. Gannon-Doak is supposed to be an exciting option to create stuff, but seemed hell bent on doing anything but getting the ball in the box.
And sadly we just have nothing to offer in attack. Throwing on Dykes as a target man only for him to win absolutely nothing in the air for the entire time he was on speaks volumes.

Overall I think we did pretty well - we have our limitations - we`re ranked 40 or so for a reason, so I think we gave the Number 5 in the world team quite a hard second half.
I don`t get the criticism of Clarke, Gannon-Doak, or Dykes. They all gave it plenty. Unfortunately Adams got starved, and we were careless with possession too often, which had them running at us too often.
We`re not really a flair team - we`re gutsy. Morocco are top notch. We did OK. And we`re still in with a chance of qualifying even with only 3 points - by virtue of keeping Morocco to one goal.

Honestly that was a tough game against a team that are so much better than us in every way. We done good to get to half time only one nil down. Especially after letting in a goal so early. I would like to see us approach games with a more positive attitude. We were so much better playing a 4-4-2 and a dont believe playing for a draw or trying to hang on is a style of play that suits us. We just donβt seem to get our good club players playing at their best in an international setup.
Least weβre in a spot where we hopefully go balls to the wall against Brazil and we can make them look like Cowdenbeath.π€£ thereβs always hope π€π»

A narrow defeat against the 5th best team in the world, but look at everyone with their anti-agendas (pick from Clarke/Hanley/Dykes/Ralston etc etc).
The fact that there`s an expectation that we could (and should) have done more says a lot about this team and the manager.

Learned zero from the Euros
We clearly have as Morocco are higher ranked and better than Germany. Looked what happened there. 2nd half was decent.
I think decent is a stretch. It was better than the first half at least, and we had more of the ball certainly, but largely because Morocco were pretty happy to let us, safe in the knowledge we werenβt really going to threaten. And we didnβt.

The pundits on Radio Scotland are a lot more positive about the performance and result than the consensus seems to be on here. Whenever we lose a game folk come on here blaming their favourite scapegoat, blaming Steve Clarke despite the fact that his tactics and selections have got us to three tournament finals and questioning why some players were ever in the squad in the first place.
Not so long ago we were hoping we could avoid big defeats in our second and third games as goal difference could be crucial. Now it`s a disaster we lost by a goal to a team almost 40 places above us in the FIFA rankings.

Iβll give Steve Clarke credit for getting us to three tournaments, but weβve hardly done ourselves justice when weβve gone to any of them. Criticism for that is just as fair as praising him for getting us there.

I`m not sure any team would take their foot of the gas in a crucial group game when only one goal up, especially when they could make up to five substitutions. They looked a bit troubled when Doak ran at them down the right and were a wee bit lucky to survive two decent penalty shouts.

None of us wanting to be dumping on our national team. Yeah Morocco are in the top ten but Hatai aren`t in the top eighty. Between the two games we managed two shots on target. By any metric that isn`t good and it`s not some grave sin to point that out. We could and should be better than we are showing.

Youβre right, we could have had two penalties, could see those given for sure. And Gannon-Doak looked like he could be dangerous, and did put them a little on the backfoot, but his reticence to put the ball in the box when he got into a decent position summed us up as an attacking force for me.

It is obvious Morocco are a better team with better players (undefeated in 24 games, 3 defeats in 63 I heard), so if we had planned on going toe-to-toe with them for 90+ minutes we might have lost 4-1, and seriously damaged our goal difference, which could decide our fate.
I suspect Clarke was using the same game plan that Lennon used in the Cup Final - keep it tight for the first half and frustrate the opposition, stay in the game at 0-0 or 0-1 and then go for it in the second half. TBH it nearly worked, and our GD is still not negative.

Here`s my tuppence worth .....
We beat a diddy team in the first game (just) and it kinda went to our heads and we (the fans) thought we were better than we actually are.
The reality is , we`re not a great side, that`s it.
We`re decent on our day , ...but our days are few and far between.
This was never going to be an easy group to get out of.
I fully expect Brazil to thump us but we might get lucky and be one of the sides that go through on 3 points.
I reckon that`s our only chance
If that happens, great.
If not , hey we gave it our best.
Here`s a question..... How many teams at this tournament are ranked lower than us ?
Would I be right in saying it`s more than 10 teams?
And we`ve beaten 2 of them (recently) in Haiti and Curacao.

Absolutely this. Some folk overdoing the criticism today. Top 5 teams defenders stopped us til late in the second half where we rattled them. 0-1 to a top sides isnt a disgrace

A narrow defeat against the 5th best team in the world, but look at everyone with their anti-agendas (pick from Clarke/Hanley/Dykes/Ralston etc etc).
The fact that there`s an expectation that we could (and should) have done more says a lot about this team and the manager.
Well said. Some folk need a cold shower.

To be honest most of our players play to a very high standard for their clubs and in very competitive leagues but when they are placed in the same team something isnβt clicking. Yes we have had some amazing results and qualifying was great after years of disappointment. But we still seem to be at the same level as before and not able to make an impact in a tournaments. for me Clarke has and never will be the manager who can make a difference. Iβm not a fan of his tactics and Iβd wish weβd play to the strengths that suit the Scottish football style. Thereβs no way Morocco should bullying us off the ball all night. Even if they are a far better team. You need to get stuck in and compete more on a physical level. I donβt want to slate individual players as I not fully aware of circumstances but some are a poor representation of how good they are when they play for their league side. I not sure how we fix that but if we want to qualify regularly and expand that by getting through the first round then we need to figure it out.

I think our pressure in 2nd half deserved a draw, despite not getting that goal we needed. What I didnβt get was why he brought on Stewart instead of Shankland? Him and Dykes are effectively the same, and leaving our best goal scorer on bench when chasing a goal seemed strange.
And not going to lie, but what have Hanley and Ralston got on Clarke? Sorry, but Hanley was so far off it tonight it was embarrassing for him. And Ralston over Hickey? π

Bottom line, we weren`t good enough. I thought we set up not to lose a goal but those plans went up in smoke after 70 seconds. Sometimes you just have to go for it. The Scotland teams of the past when facing Brazil did that. I hope we can do that next week.

Hanley made a terrible error for the goal, otherwise, I can`t remember him making too many other mistakes.
Hendry was good again, Ferguson the pick of the midfielders (not the best sign as he is the most defensive one). Gunn had a decent game and looked more secure than normal.
We only got flashes from McGinn, McTominay and Christie in the 2nd half. The kindest thing I can say about Patterson is that he looks like a guy that hasn`t played football for 2 years. Tierney was ok, Robertson ok. Adams had absolutely nothing to work with.
Mclean added some composure when he came on, maybe needs to start in the Gilmour role. Dykes also did ok, pity about the header.
Mixed feelings for me. Can understand the tactics from Steve, and they kind of worked, I don`t think Morocco were particularly dangerous, but neither were we. I also feel that we are at our best when we are aggressive and press high. We might have got battered had we opened up earlier, but we might also have been able to push them back and attack more in the first half.
One more chance.

As much as folk might be happy at only losing by 1 goal to the 2022 semi finalists, the more worrying aspect for me is that it`s another tournament game where we`ve not made their goalkeeper work. We`ve played 8 tournament games under Clarke and we`ve probably registered about 6 shots in total across those 8 games, with even fewer on target (two deflected goals in Germany and a deflection v Haiti inclusive).

I would rather we went on the front foot against top opponents. Most teams in the competition seem to go out early after the first goal. Brazil scored 3 first half and sat back after that. The game was over. When you boil it down, what is the differencein trying to score in the first 20 minutes to trying to score in the last oyher than you are already a goal down.

I don`t know what instructions have been given to officials in this WC but it seems to me that the VARs are more reluctant to intervene than in, say, the English or Scottish Premierships. They appear to be looking for `clear and obvious errors` so won`t overrule any borderline on-field decisions. Last night`s ref seemed to be more tolerant of physical contact than most, otherwise we might have been awarded one if not two.

I donβt disagree but this hype over getting out of our group for the first time is a little diluted, imo, by the fact that third place was never good enough for past Scotland teams.
Only 32 teams qualified in the past. We now have 48 teams and 104 matches are played to get us back down to 32.

I think thats the way a lot of European leagues etc are ran by refs and VARs - I actually think the British group are well behind.
The issue is though that some contact warrants a foul, which last nights ref could not differentiate between for large periods of the game. Or was inconsistent with his decisions.
Now Ive looked back on it too, how on earth has the defender not seen red for bringing down Adams? He has got goal side, looks to be out pacing him, there is nobody else nearby and the ball is well outside the boxβ¦..

Must admit, I don`t know how the McGinn claim wasn`t a penalty considering some of the other decisions that were given as fouls and cards. The McTominay claim was much softer IMO. Ref was extremely inconsistent for both sides.
While we have some of the best individual players we`ve ever had and we`re overloaded at RB/LB & CM, this squad really lacks the balance that we had, particularly at GK, CB and ST, back in the 2010(?) era with the Smith/McLeish team IMHO.

The comparison with the Cup Final`s a good one. It was as if Morocco, like Celtic, had an extra man with their pace, movement and accuracy of passing causing us all sorts of problems. Fortunately they are not the most clinical of finishers. According to the stats they only managed one shot on target apart from the goal.

I think the McGinn one was a stronger shout that the Mctominay one. He knocks the ball past the man, the man puts his leg across and makes strong enough contact. If that happened at the halfway line heβs giving a foul. He had some other ridiculous decisions, the one where the guy threw his body into Mctominays legs and took him out was just outrageous refereeing.
On the day we just werenβt good enough. I donβt think Morocco put one high ball into the box other than corners, it wasnβt a game for Hanley. Big players like Mctominay have been invisible. Doak has looked our most dangerous outlet for months now, but again he was poor.. beat his man a few times then instead of putting a ball onto the target man in the box he checks back and tries to beat him again. Weβll do well to get out the group now as I fear a 3/4 goal hammering against Brazil. We simply canβt cope with players with pace.

That ref was letting those kind of challenges go unpunished the whole game which was fine but unexpected. Wouldnt surprise me if there was a prematch briefing where the var refs were told how he would officiate. I think McGinn`s slightly heavy touch counted against him as he wasn`t getting it before it went out. I do think it was a pen though.
Unlike McTominay`s which reminded me of the Paul Lambert penalty at EEP all those years ago where he chose to go down because he felt contact.

That first is factually correct but doesn`t stop any of us disagreeing with him. Or are we not allowed opinions anymore?
I strongly disagree we were rank. We started badly but grew into the game and finished relatively strongly, in my opinion.
Doak must start on Wednesday and give them something to think about. We have to start our best players.
Hereβs a question for you, Da. Why not start our best players against Morocco ?
Raymie I believe you`ve played the game at a decent level; surely it`s subjective as to who our best players are and also who the best team for that game would be? Otherwise why would that absolute dummy Oakley Boothe be on from the start in the cup final?

Despite that early lapse in concentration, I think we did okay over the piece against the 5th best team in the world. We could have had a point out of that if VAR had done it`s job and awarded that penalty. Key players like McGinn and McTominay haven`t really played as we know they can so far in this tournament, not much Clarke can do about that. I actually prefer Antony Ralston in a Scotland shirt than Patterson or Hickey, yet to see them have a good game at international level.
I think for all those having a go at Clarke, short memories, we hadn`t qualified for a major final since 1998 when he was appointed in 2019, since then we`ve qualified for the UEFA Euros 2020, been promoted to the UEFA Nations League A, qualified for the UEFA Euros 2024, and qualified for the FIFA World Cup 2026 where we still have a realistic chance to progress. We`ve had some fantastic results along the way, Norway, Spain. Denmark. He`s developed a fantastic team spirit, they are like a club team and got a 47% win ratio.
For everyone that wants rid of him, be careful what you wish for, do you fancy not being back at a major tournament until FIFA World Cup 2054?

I`d happily take that chance if it meant getting rid of Clarke. We are averaging a shot on target only once every 65 minutes over the Euros and WC so far. That is utterly horrendous. 7 shots on target since we kicked off against Germany.

Losing a goal within the first couple of minutes.. .
Dubious refereeing and being denied a clear penalty whilst finding it difficult to manage any substantial attacks on goal...
Remind you of any other team?

Expectations eh?
We did extremely well to hold the 6th best team in the world to one goal, and might even have sneaked a late equaliser. That might just let us get through in a 3rd spot. If so, job done - qualifying from the section for the first time.
I donβt disagree but this hype over getting out of our group for the first time is a little diluted, imo, by the fact that third place was never good enough for past Scotland teams.
Only 32 teams qualified in the past. We now have 48 teams and 104 matches are played to get us back down to 32.
I think you have to start our best players. No doubt we will have to score at keast one goal against Brazil to come away with at least a point. I thought we should have had a penalty and a sending off for thr foul on Adams. These are unfortunately "what ifs". The bottom line is we need to score and go out on the pitch with that mindset

The officials were very inconsistent and awarded fouls against Scotland`s physical tackles whilst denying the very same against.
I was in the stadium and was confident at the time that it was a penalty. Now looking back on it, I am totally π― convinced.
We were a few bad decisions away from gaining a point, possibly even winning that match and it hurts.
Clarke got us to this tournament and I am grateful to him. He has to stay and I don`t support the Clarke-Out Brigade and suspect there reasoning is massively flawed, small-minded and bizarrely ill-timed π

Clarke got his tactics spot on last night.
Go out to attack them first half , we would have lost 3-0 minimum.
I was very heartened by our team spirit second half and the only team holding out by the end were Morocco.
We have to (as fans) realise our level in football terms.
Stevie knows our limitations and played to our strengths.

I fear Euro 96 again where we miss out by one goal. We need to avoid a spanking against Brazil. If we can keep it down to 1 or 2 then we might scrape through. We did well to avoid a battering after losing an early goal.

It is subjective and there are such things as horses for courses and what you want to achieve from a game. You then have occasions when the manager gets his team selection wrong or the players he picks donβt perform to their levels.
Folks on here will know that I am not a Steve Clarke fan. Heβs a pragmatic and primarily cautious manager. I think the Scots could be a little more adventurous. He is the Scottish version of Gareth Southgate, who did well, to a point. Southgate copped criticism in similar ways to Clarke.
It`s bloody tough being a legend

McGinn was definitely fouled inside the box, and to me
that`s a penalty all day long. The McTominey one was
50/50, Celtic and Rangers would have been given a
penalty in both incidents. The foul on Adams should
have been a red card, not yellow. Yes we were poor, but
a crap referee doesn`t help.

That makes even less sense. Whatever their motivation they didn`t manage to increase their lead. When you lose an early goal against such a higher ranked team you expect the roof to fall in, so maybe we deserve some credit for staying in the game for so long.

Of course they deserve credit. It was a decent 2nd half performance and I think McGinn should have got a pen. I felt at the time we were not positive enough but on reflection we were having a go at a time when conceding on the break would have been worse for our prospects than sitting in to defend the 1-0.
At a goal up though, Morocco didn`t need to do anything except keep a clean sheet - unless they conceded. And knowing that they have their easiest group game to come. Even you would concede that`s a bit different to our situation, no?

I`m not clear what point you`re making. The way I saw it both teams were trying to score . Morocco had a few chances to finish the game but didn`t take them. I think poor finishing is a weakness of theirs. Apart from the goal they only had one other shot on target.
