I will take a while to get over our painful drawn out exit

Where on earth will Scotland look to now to lift the team (& hopefully make a raft of positive player changes?) a proper team reset of both players & mindset is neededâŚâŚâŚpffft

He`s an honest guy and he knows what went wrong. He had a new contract and he could have stuck with it, but he chose to go (probably).
It`s time for a new manager to build a new squad. SC got us to the championships, but he couldn`t get us any further. Can anyone else do any better?

Thanks for getting us to 2 major tournaments in a row, it`s been a blast (until the actual main event). Got to give the guy credit for quitting as I think that means that he won`t get a pay off??? I don`t think the SFA would have sacked him, not because they`d have to fork out a small fortune but because their is no obvious replacement that will automatically make us better.
The Scotland job is a bit of a poisoned chalice so I can`t see us getting anybody that will excite the fans. In all honesty, I doubt even Guardiola or Klopp would make us any better. We simply don`t have much in the way of quality players.
I`d see if Harry Redknapp wants to come out of retirement. If Pochettino was available I`d fancy shovelling cash his way but I couldn`t see him wanting the gig. It`ll be a recently out of work SPL manager.
No way Moyes will quit the EPL for the national team.

I donât think the criticism of Steve Clarke (from elsewhere, not in the posts here so far) are merited. Alex Ferguson couldnât get us past the first round with Sounness, Strachan, Archibald, Narey, Miller, Cooper etc. what chance did Clarke have with our current crop ? But our players let themselves and our country down. They certainly didnât give the best account of themselves - even without being world class.

I can`t see Ange being interested, to be honest.
He`s managed an international side alreadyâAustralia. He transformed a moderate group of players into a technically strong, attack-oriented side that won the Asian Cup and emerged from a very tough qualifying group to reach the World Cup finals in Russia.
On the plus side, he knows Scotland well, is generally liked in the country, and it would be a hell of a coup for the SFA if they did manage to bring him in. He would certainly put an end to the Largs Mafia and rebuild Scotland in a very different manner.

But you cant win 1 in 9 games at the tournaments and expect to keep on going.

As I said on the No Scotland No Party Podcast, our World Cup problems are all on Steve Clarke for me, but Iâm genuinely shocked he walked away, and although Iâm nervous about whoâs next, I do think itâs the right decision. Clarke was the right man at the right time, but I also think itâs the right time to hand over the reigns as the dynamic of the squad is changing and heâll always have his tournament failures hanging over his head.
He gave me some of the most enjoyable nights following the national team and Iâll always be greatful to him for the job he did and getting Hampden full again. Itâs shouldnât be overlooked the absolute mess he took over from. However, attending games have been a snoozefest recently and it was moments that got us to the World Cup, not performances. I was dreading the Nations League campaign and the subsequent Euro Qualifiers under him.
Moving forward, I donât know who will get it. Prior to his move to Rangers, I would have said McInness and would have been delighted with that, but it ainât going to happen. I hear people saying Ange, I would love that but doubt itâs realisticâŚ..so who?? I think the only realistic option within Scottish football at the moment is McGlynn, or we go down the foreign route as even the Scots who are managing south of the border are out of our reach at the moment, for one reason or another. Iâd rather not go foreign, it never sits easy with me that you have to be Scottish or have Scottish heritage to play for the country, but anyone can manage usâŚit just doesnât sit right and Iâd just rather not.

He turned Hampden from a half empty stadium into a cauldron of noise. He gave us brilliant nights and unforgettable experiences. In time, qualifying for the World Cup could become another unforgettable memory.
Sometimes, though, you have to accept where you are. Do I think we`re good enough to qualify? I`m not so sure.

There genuinely doesn`t seem to be any realistic suitable Scottish managers available.
I always thought Moyes would be a shoo in once he is done with Everton - too early though, I don`t think anyone is leaving the English Prem to manage Scotland.
I kind of wanted Clarke to stay on, but I recognise our record in the finals have been grim. The truth is, that`s the story of Scotland - I`ve just finished Archie McPherson`s book on Scotland in the WC, and my own thoughts are, it`s all excuses , at all the tournaments it`s our own fault- either not as good as we think we are, or basic errors in preparation
We have a real problem too with the lack of quality younger players coming through.

I think we all recognise that whether or not Clarke had stayed in post, a major rebuild of the team is needed - it`s been a bridge too far for the present squad.
One problem is that unless we are fantastically lucky (and with Scotland`s history that is unlikely) the younger players coming in will pick up a string of defeats, which would see us tumble down the FIFA ratings and make it even more difficult for future qualifications.

Ange and Moyes won`t be interested, as both could get jobs of a much higher calibre. It`s a real predicament for the SFA as to where we go from here.
Clarke did what was asked of him, which was to qualify for tournaments, and the SFA welcomed the financial boost that qualification brought.
As a Scotland fan for many years, I just don`t think we`re capable of playing the exciting, attacking football that so many seem to crave.
With a squad in which many players have probably played their last major tournament, and an Under 21 side that can`t even qualify for major tournaments, I look to the future of the national team with a great deal of scepticism.
I think we`ve had our time, and I fear we could be heading back to the years before Clarke, when failing to qualify for tournaments became the norm.

I don`t imagine it`s remotely likely to be any fantasy football managers like Ange, Frank, etc.
Given Moyes` comments on the current squad capabilities and the lack of talent coming through there is no way I see him packing in a PL job for Scotland.
You`d like to think that the SFA would know the reaction of the fans if they even think a Malky McKay type appointment.
Lennon will be purely football forum talk. Whilst he`s close to our hearts just now with the Pars connection can you imagine the reaction from the other side of Glasgow? SFA would need to be crackers.

^^^ The league format needs complete over-haul and the SPL and SFA need incentives to play and promote Scottish players.
An AI search shows that the Pars have 73% of their players are Scottish whilst Celtic have 3 and Rangers 2 and this needs addressed.
Additionally there are 20+ Scots in the EPL and 8 in the Italian League.
The Scottish premiership needs expanding to 20 to allow smaller teams more opportunity to play at a more competitive level.
The old firm monopoly need to be broken.

If the Scottish Premiership was more competitive would it be likely to produce better quality players? Most leagues in Europe are dominated by two or, at most three, clubs and they seem to produce more international class players than we do.
We do seem to recruit an awful lot of players from abroad now but are they hindering the development of the top Scottish youngsters? Won`t the cream still rise to the top? Some of the best Scots seem to get picked up early by Engish or maybe even continental clubs but isn`t this likely to help them develop rather than hinder them?
This situation`s been the same for years and we`ve never got to the bottom of it. There`s also the argument that Scottish kids are less active and spend more time on compuetrs and other devices but are they really any different from kids all over the world?
I do find it odd that clubs like ours no longer have a competitive reserve team. The need to have a 20-man first team matchday squad probably means having a full squad of at least 25 but there`s no way they`re all going to get regular game time. The whole syatem seems crazy.

In a worldwide survey in 2020, kids aged 10 - 15 from 38 countries were asked lots of health related questions. They were then ranked according to how healthy they were. Scotland came 38th. The survey found that Scottish kids sleep less than those from other countries and undertake less physical exercise. They were top for screen time, however... đą

I couldn`t agree with you more, wee eck. It would be far more beneficial for youngsters to play against men in reserve games than play other youngsters in youth games.

Big dunc would be my choice but that would require him and the sfa to put aside their differences which I canny see happening tbh if itâs malky McKay then weâd be as well no bothering with international football because we would be going backwards at an alarming rate of knots

One man with a Pars` connection who has been mentioned is Alex Neil, manager of Millwall.
What is big Dunc doing now apart from pontificating about the WC on ITV? Wasn`t his last job helping to get ICT relegated to League 1?

A fair few lower ranked teams made it through the group stages, fair enough we had 2 top 10 sides in our group but look at Cape Verde. Not one of their players is playing anywhere near the top level but they somehow manage to hold 2nd ranked Spain to a draw and scored 2 against the 16th ranked Uruguay and saw their group phase out unbeaten. The new manager needs to study how these lower ranked teams play against bigger teams, as they`re clearly doing something different from us.

Watching the S Africa v Canada game just now, you`ve got to acknowledge that teams from Africa, North and Central America and Asia have improved significantly over recent years and left some of the countries from more traditional footballing areas, like Scotland, behind.

Whilst other countries are improving,Surely the Weather conditions need to be taken into account?. How many of us were struggling with the heat a gew days ago, never mind trying to play fitba in it.....and against players acclimatised to it.?
Still think it best for him to quit. Way too defensive.

I don`t think we will be able to attract a manager of any great standing in the game. Who would want the job? It`s an aging squad, and there are no real young talents coming through. The fans that wanted rid of Clarke got their wish, now we will have a conveyor belt of managers that can`t get us to a major tournament. We might grace a World Cup again by 2054

Still gutted. Best manager Scotland has had. 3 tournaments in a row compared with 28 years since we qualified for a world cup.
Not convinced those who helped boot him out undestand how long that is. Those of us over 70 who were lucky enough to get to tournaments almost ever 4 years do.

Predictably, the SFA are getting it in the neck already before the recruitment process for his successor has even started. They`re getting no credit for appointing SC at a time when we hadn`t qualified for a major tournament for over 20 years and he managed it 3 times in 7 years.

Thank goodness he`s gone . I just hope we get rid of his prehistoric brand of fitba as well . Even tho they didn`t make it to the finals , both Wales and Ireland play a quicker , more attacking style of fitba than us , and i`m sure would have made more of an impression in the finals than we did if they`d had the same luck (yes luck) in qualification that we did .

Clarke has taken Killie to 3rd place in the Premier League, been appointed to the Scotland job, qualified for 3 tournaments and resigned - all since Ireland last qualified for anything. Not sure they`ll be quite as smug about their style of play in comparison to ours.

Itâs also interesting to see that when Clarke took over as manager Scotland were 44th in the FIFA ranking. We came into this WC at 42nd. Seems to suggest we have basically stood still this past 7 years!

Can`t argue with his record, but he`s had a pretty solid set of players so was it all to do with his coaching? Could another manager have done better?
The squad certainly could have done better and, as has been said for years, we need to be developing players. What are the SFA and Scottish Government doing to encourage more kids into sport? How could the SFA and SPFL improve competition in the Scottish leagues given most prospective Scotland players will start at their local club or regional academy? Quite a few of them current crop of players won`t see the next world cup so who is coming in to replace them? It`s great to see the likes of Tod getting a chance to train with the Scotland team but what else is being done to encourage and developer Scottish players?
Finally, how can we chuck Celtic and Rangers out of Scotland? No doubt Rangers will ruin Shankland and he`ll end up at a run of the mill English championship team.

Who figured out how to use McTominay in an attacking role?
Who figured out how to use Robertson and Tierney at the same time?
Clarke got the most from this group of players.
Scotland was hosed at the WC draw, having to play 3 non-Euro teams, all of which are comfortable in hot and humid weather and 2 in the top 10. Also, drawn to play Haiti first didnât help â unlike Senegal, which got to play Iraq after playing France and Norway.
The odds of Scotland getting to 4 pts were very long. And yet they almost did it against Morocco, except we were undone by the ref who called fouls only if the defender didnât attempt to play the ball. Clarke and the players did as well as could be expected.
