On updates duty today but will keep an eye on the forum too.
Killie swept past Ayr last night in the league cup round - albeit it was a feisty encounter for the rugby park men ~ let’s see if we can do the same against the Staggies.
If ye get the team lines before me please post them thanks.

By and large we were awful first half.
We can only play this formation if the wingbacks can beat their man and get a decent final ball in, if not then it’s just boring turgid football where we don’t create enough decent chances to win game.
Look dodgy at the back a few times too.
Not enjoying this season so far if I’m honest. Came into it full of hope we could win the league but our first two league games have been very disappointing and we don’t look any better first half today.
Hoping for a big improvement second half.

We were making the change before the corner they scored from so not a reaction to going behind. That was just the cherry on the cake.

It’s early in the season. There’s a huge turn around in the squad but the core of the squad is the same. We’ll do fine this season. As much fun as the Scottish cup final was you could make the argument it hindered the league. I’m really not fussed about being in the league cup - I’ll judge us on the league.

I don`t understand what the plan is for going forward, and it often seems the players don`t either. Slow, sideways, then misplace a pass, moan at each other, repeat?
5 at the back doesn`t seem to be working at all. Not sure what A.Tods role is meant to be in the system either, is mostly anonymous, needed to finish that chance.
Amade had a good game, the subs made a difference.
Not seeing much improvement so far this season, I don`t think the system works and I don`t think the players are able to play their best.

We`ve got about 35 players on our books plus all these extra coaches bene etc. Instead of trying to unearth someone to sell on for a profit which rarely happens at this level, would have been better spending the wage budget on 22 players that can get us promoted then when your in SPL you can be Motherwell etc and trade players for money. It’s time to change that formation surely. The back three completely restricts us and means we offer nothing going forward at all.
We looked miles better after the changes in the second half, but then the defence just went to sleep for their second, which is a shame.
I’d like to see Cooper get a chance to start games. He always makes a difference when he comes on and made us look more dangerous today.
Also whoever certified that referee needs their head examining. Embarrassingly inept performance throughout.

It’s never going to work playing 2 strikers and Tod in behind. Tod just doesn’t do enough. Can’t wait for Abdulai to come back and the other Tod can drop out.
Plenty new boys and it will take time to bed them in but this is defo now Lenny’s team and squad and he’s got the biggest budget any of our managers have had in a lang time, he should be able to earn his money and put out a team that look decent and competes.
If we have to change out set up and formation every game it suggests it’s not working and is to easy to play against.
Plus point is Allan looked good, surely we’ll change formation to accommodate him in attacking midfield with Gilmour and amade going forward.

Dreadful. Outplayed by County for 80 mins who deserved their win. Our problems lie in centre midfield who are neither creative nor direct. Gilmour hasnt kucked a ball this season another poor poor contribution. Any player could have been taken off at half time. We need to strengthen our attacking midfield options.

Both Tods and Fraser really poor today. Can Fraser actually beat a first man with his passing/crosses?

Not sure why anyone thinks Lobban was good when he came on. Was at fault for the second goal and didn’t impress me at all.
Missed Cleal-Harding in defence.

Beaten by a team that was well organised and a lot sharper and quicker than us. The midfield three needs binned, although it looks like we’ve recruited with this formation in mind. We were completely overrun in the middle of the park, and to not address that at half time and then bring Morrison on is criminal from Lenny.
We looked better in a 4-4-2, but the snail pace of a back two cost us the second goal.
Amade and ox were probably the only pass marks for me today. Lobban looked better than Kearney when he came on as well. We were Very poor overall and miles off where we need to be. Still a long way to go, but there is a lot of work to do if we genuinely want to get promoted. Partick would have absolutely smashed us if we played them today.
This is Andy Tod`s world and we are lucky to live in it.

I`ve been saying we`ve been needing experienced players, leaders, organisers, people that know what to do to manage a game, by fair means or foul, for years. Until we get some in that have that winning mentality, players like the Rovers Scott Brown, Ashcroft at PT, even that Jason Holt who played well last week, we will be stuck in this division. Every signing we make doesn`t have to be 19 with potential re-sale value

"We have loads of players now but don`t seem to be able to fit 11 of them in any particular formation"
been that way for years.
"It will be back to 343 Next week though"
if it is it cannot be that front 3 and id add Rudden to it if Kane has done his hamstring, balance is totally wrong. people thinking that 442 is going to change things for the better didnt see the games last year when they started it and were just as bad and had to change, the same mistakes, poor play etc.
"Not sure why anyone thinks Lobban was good when he came on. Was at fault for the second goal and didn’t impress me at all.

So far nothing has changed from last season. We look like a team that will challenge for a playoff spot nothing more.
We love talking about the project were building but in fact were not going anywhere.
Agree.

Need to start with a 4-4-2. Good rigid system and then change through the game if needed. Imo we have to many players now but it’s good competition in training.
Lennon has to make up his mind the strongest team to start week in/out.
And let’s remember consistency is a problem or we wouldn’t be in the Championship and playing higher.
I still think we will be up in the top 3 but Lennon needs to sit down with his staff and work out our strongest team to start every week.

Worst I’ve seen us play in months of football today.
No cohesion
No end product.
Lost nearly every 50/50 ball until late on.
John Tod had his worst game I’ve seen him playing to date.
Amade was about our only saving grace.
How Cooper can’t get a start is beyond me.
All credit to Ross County today.
Nice to see Hammy come round the park before the match to applaud the fans.

Hard to believe we`re in this state at this stage of the season.
I mean, what identity have the team got, how are we meant to be playing ?
I know the formation but we`re not good at doing it, but he still persists.
I can`t get past seeing...start the game and keep it tight, (playing mainly 💩), we`ll change thing`s early 2nd half and go for it the last 10. That`s all it seems to be

That was garbage and embarrassing. The referee was a joke, inconsistent and frequently wrong. Not wrong because it was an interpretation, but wrong because did not follow the laws of the game. We are practising for the dashing white sergeant, fwd, back, side ,side back fwd, side back
I dont understand why we keep going wide to players who cant beat the full back and also can`t get a cross in, and on the rare times we do get a cross in it`s usually awful.
This was bothering kane in the first half he was getting v cross that no ball down the middle. What happened to a ball to the front, who the lays of to the midfield who are supposed have moved into space, but dont.
Our golden boy Andy Todd. Does not contribute enough, nutmegged the defender first half the hit it within the keepers reach and the header sitter in the second half oh dear, he must not be an auto start. He needs to up his work rate and strengthen up. And morrison well, runs lots but adds no value, I would loan him out to a Sunday league team.

Morrison provided the cross for Andy Tods sitter. This narrative that he provides nothing is just false. Provided more than Fraser.
How was Lobban at fault for 2nd goal? Where was the centre halves? Thats right, John Tod was at the half way line losing the initial challenge for the ball.

You know it’s bad when I agree with one of da no 1’s posts.
Some have been dreadful so far this season.
I’d wager Abdulai in for John tod and Allan in for Andrew Todd but sitting a bit deeper and we’ll be so much better with movement in midfield and pace and power.
Let’s be honest apart from finishing and having potential Andrew Tod is not a championship level footballer in every other aspect of his game and yet we persevere with him in such an important position so we’re a man down most of the time. His brother has taken a step back from even last season.
Agree on not having an identity, Lennon married to a system that doesn’t work or suit half players we have signed. We’ll improve I’m sure as we bring in the new guys but hard going if they are hamstrung by how we’re set up.

he just signed a new contract, i think that answers that question......
couple of quotes from Lennon
“I’ve got problems both ends of the pitch at the minute and it’s been rankling with me since the start of the season,”
“Maybe it’s because there’s a turnover of players and new players coming in and bedding in.
“But that performance is unacceptable. No question.
“I apologise to the supporters for that.
“But I have to find the solutions and it’s both ends of the pitch.
“It’s a punch in the face and it’s a big opportunity missed.
“We only have ourselves to blame. Nobody else. Not the referee, not the opposition. We only have ourselves to blame.”
maybe its the wrong players that dont add to what was already here and a different type/quality was needed, that goes back beyond this summer too.

My second time seeing Donnelly today and I`m yet to be convinced he`s any better than Davidson or Sam Young. He didn`t win enough headers and looked questionable chasing back for me.

GSJ 8 of the 11 were players here and playing last season.
Who’s setting the standards on the pitch? Gilmour is struggling for form himself just now but he’s hardly going to put a rocket up Andrew Tod to get home moving about and into the game.
We’re currently carrying a few players and that doesn’t end well, couple of players to come back into the 11 which will help but no one should be guaranteed a start but it seems some are.

Subs and Amade no bad. Defence is a bombscare, and although Ox made some great saves, from my angle he should do better with the 2nd goal. Got a good hand to but went straight through him. Massive improvement need but NL does not know his best 11 or formation and that’s worrying as we have played 6 games.

and the other 3 that were signed do they fit the system next to the 8 other starters, certainly up front in Shaw`s case he doesnt but that will be Tod`s fault as well.
too many players have not turned up so far, the problems are not all down to 1 or 2 who seem to be the main focus for some.

Going through this thread I reckon that every one of the starting XI apart from Amade has come in for criticism from someone!
The shining light for me was the introduction of Oyirwoth who looks like the sort of player we`ve been missing - someone with physical presence who is capable of making an incisive pass. Sadly I think the player whose place is most under threat is Charlie Gilmour. He always seems to take the easy option which is fine in certain situations but not when you`re looking to exert pressure and convert it into goals.

Olly Shaw has been a huge disappointment for me.
Unless it’s put on a plate for him he just won’t do the rest of the dirty work to score.
He is next to useless in the air.
I watched closely in the second half when a great ball was crossed to him.
He jumped a second too early resulting in it going over. Not for the first time either.
I normally criticise Morrison and his final pass/cross is still lacking but he had something about him when he came on and worked their keeper.
Lennon echoed my thoughts in his post match interview.
He was clearly raging at the lack of leadership when the chips were down on our own patch.

Lennon seemed livid with that today. Hopefully he has a bit of self reflection knowing that the shape with that personnel isn`t the way to go either and that`s on him and the management team.
As for the players, some of them need to play an awful lot better or make way for the subs that are chomping at the bit to get on as we saw today. Changes required for next week as it`s not just a one off and Livingston away will be a much sterner test than Ross county at home

Beaten by the better team today. You can`t play for 10 minutes and expect to win anything. The concern really is our lack of ability to score goals and giving away poor goals. Its dejavu to this time last season. If you are looking to win the league this season, there is not much room for sentiment. You are only as good as your last game, and where players are underperforming, you have to drop them and give others the opportunity. No point in scapegoating individuals as it was a collective failure, its looking at areas where you can make improvements. I think the three at the back worked last year because we had pace and strength. KN in particular could recover well and JCM was positionally good and won most headers. The balls out from the back were also better. There is obviously a turnover of players this year and it takes a little time to gel, but I don`t think that was the issue today it was just a poor performance

I thought Donnelly played ok to be honest.
Reflecting on it after a nights kip.
I still think both Tod’s need dropped we need to get real, they seem to have been devoid of criticism in the past but they just aren’t cutting it. A.Tod offers nothing for 95% of a game and is too lightweight and taken off the ball so easily. His body language at times as well is all over the place.
Shaw needs to do more, been disappointed so far, not getting many opportunities at the moment but he’s not working hard enough to earn them.
Kane the only one on the front line that can handle it, although he didn’t have his best game either yesterday.
Kearney needs to take players on, so many times he gets the ball and it’s sideways or backwards.
Gilmour has been poor, captain or otherwise he needs to up his game, if he’s still unfit he shouldn’t be starting.
Allan looked quality when he came on, strolled the game for the period of time he was on. Adams super keen and energetic, but needs more game time for me to really form an opinion on him, other than running, haven’t seen anything yet.
Lobban looked good, likes to push forward.
It’s still early but there are warning signs that need addressed quickly, confident we’ll get it right and I think that has to happen with a change of formation.

Isn’t pre season the time to sort this sort of stuff out? I mean I get we’re still adding to our squad but other teams inc Ross county look so much better drilled and dangerous while we still look like we don’t quite know what we’re doing.
Wonder what the players think of this, they must know pretty quick when a formation isn’t quite working, must be frustrating to work hard to get the ball back then it goes forward and is lost to some very poor decision making etc.

I think when you play with wing backs the point is to get the ball in the box from the wide areas. If you dont do that there seems to be no point in the formation. On some occasions the ball into the box didn`t come we checked back, lost momentum and allowed them to organise defensively. Other times the crosses were poor or the forwards didn`t take up good positions.
We looked well off it TBH

Because it`s very much a team game, it takes a lot more than a few weeks to blend a good team together. It`s a fine combination of knowing each others strengths and weaknesses. There`s also the psychological issues of players from one week to the next not being sure whether they`ll be in the starting eleven, or not, because the pool of players is too big. That doesn`t help in individual players really taking ownership of the performances and results. "Getting another 5 new faces in the door" is all very well but that will inevitably have the effect of starting from scratch with building team relationships and further unsettle the players who have just "come in the door". Then when that doesn`t work right away, the cry comes up, Oh we need more experienced players, as if they grow on trees and are desperately wanting to come to a team that is struggling because it has too many new inexperienced faces. Apart from that, I thought our forwards yesterday lacked a bit of explosive pace. When we did get the chance to outpace the Ross County defence, we didn`t seem to have the legs to do it. I don`t think there is any magic wand to get us scoring goals and winning games, just a bit of blood, sweat and tears.

You`re right Berkey, the close season and pre season games are when the players are coached into Lennon`s idea`s.
To play like that at this stage is utterly disappointing, especially when you consider he had them doing the same last season, and they couldn`t do it then either.
It was worrying when he said a few weeks ago we were a week behind in prep, we actually look like we`re a month behind.

Paralex makes a good point about the squad size as I was thinking the same thing myself. It’s all well and good having a decent size squad to cover for injuries and competition for places is supposed to…. In theory…. make players work harder to get in the team and stay there but there maybe some players, especially younger ones who may feel they are being squeezed down the pecking order……Managers job though to keep everyone motivated and get the best out of all of them.
Never thought a Lennon team would surrender meekly but we did on a few occasions last season and yesterday was pretty meek apart from a wee spell after we scored. We need leadership on the park too. We seem to be lacking some of that. Not sure about CG as captain. It’s also a little concerning when you see players with negative body language. Even Fraser was showing signs of that through frustration yesterday.
There are definitely problems just now and they need fixing asap. The highest paid management team in the league by a country mile have to start earning their corn or this season could be one big damp squid.
What an opportunity we missed in 2014.

What was with the SNW sign with `missed us?`.
It was cringeworthy, thats what it was. Missing the Ayr game to turn up yesterday just shows they never got the STs for that section. Wonder if they will be there in their numbers next Friday night?
The irony of it wasn’t missed. Held a banner saying “Missed Us?” then stayed silent for the whole match after letting off pyro.

I always bring a small back pack to the games and it always gets checked by the steward at the turnstyle. Surely they are briefed to make a careful inspection of bags being taken into the NW. If so, how come they fail to identify and confiscate the pyros, because surely that`s what the inspections are for?

Chat a few years ago, Paralex, was that pyros were being given to younger fans - who can’t be searched - then passed back to the adults once they were in the stadium.

The searches are useless for pyro. Ive had pat downs and whole ive never brought pyro or booze in, i dont doubt i could. Any pocket inside a jacket would do. Seen atewards search womens bags or backpacks and they just glance in. Anyone with a jacket/jumper in bag can gide anything easily.

We have CCTV in that area, so it can`t be difficult to catch the perpetrator and give them a lifetime ban. The thing flashed and gave off a bang after the smoke cleared.
The "ultra" scene in Germany works on self policing. If they are costing the club fines, the people around them weed out the troublemakers. The pyro doesn`t add anything other than potentially causing financial issues for the club. Get rid of the idiots who bring it in and/or use it.

Last season we did well in the scottish cup and even rode our luck maybe a few times but we were prepared to battle for the win, yesterday we were not prepared to do that. There are a few players that need resting, Gilmore, Kearney for start, hope Abdulai is fit for next week along with Harding and a start for Oyirwoth and Bray, Amade and possibly Cooper. Team just seem a bit unbalanced just now and players finding it very hard to settle into their positions and just what is exactly expected of them. Maybe until the regular starting 11 has emerged it can take longer to reach that point with too many players.?

Lost pretty much entire first choice defence between Abdulai injury and the two who moved on.
I would argue that despite all the goals drawing in media / hype attention to Tod, that, in hindsight, the two of them were probably more vital and key to the team.

Talking of celebrating goals, the Ross County players must have taken up almost the whole of the 3 minutes added time in celebrating theirs on Saturday. That`s the next type of time-wasting that should be addressed. It`s pretty obvious players delay their return to their own half for as long as possible after scoring and it doesn`t seem to be added on. How about allowing 30 seconds before awarding the other team a free kick on the centre spot?

The ref was a joke with the added time. He should be cited for that alone. It was a disgrace.

3 minutes would just about cover the time taken to make subs so he didn`t add on much for time-wasting and that`s what goal celebrations are. They look choreographed nowadays. I wouldn`t be surprised if players practise them at training and, yes, I would include our players in that.

The problem is that there`s zero consistency with added time and officials. Ross county spent about 2 of the 3 minutes added time delaying restarts and other tactics. The referee blew right on 3 minutes, summed up how poor of a game he had.
Don`t get me started on the throw in rule which referees have already lost the plot with, the 5 second rule is a good idea, but enforce it when the ball is available to stop players ambling over and taking their sweet time.

That rule so far seems a waste of time. Half arsed efforts to implement it.

There were a fair few to choose from, but the most jaw-dropping moment from that ref on Saturday was when he actively blocked Cooper (I think) from getting to the ball near the edge of our box by running into him, and then not stopping play which allow them a shot a goal. He might as well have been wearing a Ross County strip at that point.

30 seconds to amble over, move the ball boy (twice) to take a long throw into the box, then make an erse of it. 🤦🏻♂️
Play went on for a while before the ref called it back too.
