I must admit I haven.t taken much interest in the nuts and bolts of US Presidential elections until this year and every day seems to throw up another anomaly. For example, each state seems to have its own approach to counting postal votes. Some start counting them before polling day, some start on polling day but before the polls close and some don.t count them until all votes have been cast and the polls are closed.
I.ve also learned that for the majority of the electoral colleges all their allocated votes are assigned to whoever wins the popular vote in that state but Maine and Nebraska assign their electoral college votes in proportion to the popular votes cast in these states.

I was looking at this earlier and was also struck by the process in Maine and Nebraska which I was unaware of until today. However, from what I read (it was just Wikipedia) it seems the case that these states don.t assign votes in proportion to the percentage of votes cast in those states, but rather each administrative region gets one vote with the remainder going to the winner of the combined vote covering all administrative districts.
I.d also never heard of the phrase .faithless electors. before today. These are members of the electoral college who don.t vote as they are meant to do. It seems a bit odd to have a system that allows this to happen, though, as our own general election process shows, they are not alone in having bizarre and anti-democratic electoral systems.

I think Nebraska and Maine give one Electoral College vote to the winner of each congressional district, with the remaining 2 to the overall winner of the popular vote in the state.
I think the number of EC votes each state has equals the number of Representatives it has in the House of Representatives plus the number of Senators in the Senate (so 2).
The District of Columbia gets the 3 it would have had were it a state.
The number of Representatives is roughly proportional to the population - I think they use a similar method to that used to allocate seats on the list at Holyrood.
Voters in Puerto Rico, Guam, the US Virgin Islands, American Samoa and the Northern Mariana Islands get a vote in the primaries, but not the election.
The concept of Faithless electors is bizarre - it seems to be becoming more common, with people becoming one as a protest. Presumably if the election were close they would be more faithful. I guess the equivalent would be (to use the last UK Election as an example), people who wanted Corbyn to be PM electing a Labour MP then them not taking the whip once they got to Westminster.
Of course, there are lots of other candidates (the Libertarians and the Greens usually run) but generally it makes no odds. Occasionally, they can make a difference - I think Nader may have cost Gore the election back in 2000 (that and the dimpled chads).

I hadn't realised there was so much of a difference in the way votes were counted and there is likely to be a majority for Biden in the uncounted postal votes in Pennsylvania. Hopefully its a big enough swing to push it Bidens way.

Supposedly there is something in US elections called the Red mirage where it often looks as if Republicans are going to win as their rural votes are more quickly counted but when the greater number of urban votes are tallied up the democrat eventually wins out. I personally hope that is the case in Pennsylvania.

If these two are the best America has to offer then it is very worrying. Both absolute screwballs! It would be funny to see Trump win though, due to the fact that the media and celebrities are constantly telling American people to vote Democrat. I don't know if the 26 women who have accused Trump of either rape or sexual harassment would see the funny side of him being re-elected but I guess winding up the media and celebs would be better than seeing him face the two civil cases he's got pending on that front once he loses the protection of the Presidency along with all the other cases he might have to face including two DAs investigations.

Just had a look and quite a few bookies have pulled a lot of their Brexit markets so there might be changes over the next few days but Smarkets has a market for Yes or No to a UK/EU Trade Deal by the end of 2020 and "Yes" is priced at 1.37 and "No" (deal) is priced at 3.15 so that particular market still expects some form of deal. Smarkets is smaller than Betfair so I'll keep an eye out for the market there.

Biden getting voted in is far better for the UK.
He is going to rejoin the WHO and try and lead a more globalised response to the pandemic.
He is going to rejoin the Paris Agreement and get the US on board with their climate obligations.
He is going to re-engage with Nato.
He's going to rejoin the Iran nuclear deal.
He's going to reduce support for the Saudi led war in Yemen that has killed over 5,000 civilians.
He'll apply political pressure on our muppets to abide by the Good Friday Agreement and he knows the wee scroat leading us is Trump light.
All the above is good for the UK.

Another major difference between US and UK elections is the way results are declared. Here is an explanation of the US way taken from the Guardian :-
..One of the things with a US election is that it is a highly decentralised system, and until the Electoral College actually meets to vote until mid-December, we don’t have an ‘official’ result. In truth, those votes aren’t actually even properly counted until the Senate meets on 6 January. It probably made more sense as a system in the 1800s when news took a lot longer to travel.
It has become tradition that ‘decision desks’ make a call that states have been won by one candidate or the other when enough votes have been counted. States that are too close to call – like Nevada and Georgia are at the moment – are, well, literally too close to call...
The .decision desks. are media outlets. That explains why the Guardian, who take their results from Associated Press, are currently showing Biden ahead 264-214 whilst the BBC (not sure who they use) are showing a lead of 243-214. The difference seems to be Arizona and Wisconsin but there is now some doubt as to whether Biden will take Arizona.

There is still a fairly big gap in the votes nationwide. Nearly 4 million more for Biden.
We are just focusing on a few states where the gap isn.t too big at the moment and ignoring all the others where the gap is huge. Biden is over a million up in New York, and Trump is more than half a million up in a few of the incest states.

In a nice twist, Trump supporters across the US say they no longer trust Fox News, presumably because they called Arizona in favour of Biden (possibly rather prematurely although it does look like he will win it)!

That's true, but they could get to 269 each. Seems very likely that Biden is going to win with a clear margin now in any case.

Automatic recount if the gap is less than 0.5.
Apparently in the past recounts have done little to change the final tallies.

Aye, TOWK. Tallies should have a capital T.
Loved this quote from the Mayor of Philadelphia.

The UK depended on him being back in.
They are all in cahoots

You name it.
The game is over but sadly the UK ecomony is going to go under.

It didn.t matter if Trump won as it is Congress that has the final say on any trade deal and the Democrats control the lower House.

Very pleasing. On one hand it would be incredibly satisfying to see Trump dragged out of the White House kicking and screaming but it`s not worth the damage to democracy that would signal. It is rather bile inducing to see and read the media in foreign nations, ruled by dictators, crowing about the so called demise of American democracy.

The next four years are going to be very boring after the Trump show. I hope there`s something to discuss.

I'd imagine the next couple of months are going to be worth watching...there's no way Trump is going in a dignified fashion. Not in his DNA. I'd imagine there'll be recounts and court cases. Will he whip up the more radical nutters into violence? Hope not.

Biden has video and pictorial footage of him being rather... Creepy to young women. Frankly I wouldn't have him anywhere near the WH but he's nothing compared to Trump at least

No, Biden can be worse.
He is a smart politician and is far less offensive than Trump. Biden`s language is more moderate and befits a man who wants to lead a nation. Trump`s language was locker room bigotry from the off and he will not be missed. Good riddance to bad rubbish.
But Biden is a Wall Street man. What ever benefits the dollar he will do, whatever country the petro-dollar requires to be invaded. He is more dangerous, on the international stage, than Trump ever was. Like Trump, and Bush and Clinton before him, Biden was a draft dodger who will try to exorcise his guilt by being tough on military intervention to... don`t laugh... enforce democracy on failed states.

Trump will not be going away. He will still be dominating the news cycles. It is just that the stories will now be focussed on what are likely to be his many fights to avoid court action, his ever-so-shaky marriage to Melania and the ongoing antics of his lunatic offspring.
He and his grotesque family are television gold. They are a ratings gift for the mainstream media.
Just like the Kardashians, The Trump Show will become totally inconsequential to our everyday lives, but it will still grab our attention.
Fortunately, Donald Trump will no longer have access to the nuclear codes.
But let`s not forget that there is still a couple of months to go to the climax of the current season...
:)

The next highlight will be seeing who gets and doesn`t get a presidential pardon before he leaves.

I'm wondering if Trump will even stay until January.
I can see him resigning so that Pence can pardon him. Then he only has the NY State charges to face.

Wouldn`t he have to have been convicted first though to receive a pardon? I suspect once he isn`t President if he thinks charges are looming he`ll be on the first plane to Moscow.

No the President may pardon someone for any potential crimes they may have committed but have not been convicted of.
Its a whacky whacky system.

That is bonkers mind you I vaguely remember something a wee while back about Trump potentially being able to pardon himself!
In other news I see his son, Donald Junior, is being lined up for a 2024 tilt.

Ford managed to pardon Nixon before he had been charged.
Before this the convention had been that a President couldn`t (or rather didn`t) pardon folk for potential future convictions.
