Very sad to hear this news. Hopefully the generation he inspired will realise his dream of independence from our colonial occupiers

Parboiled. It is safe to say we are at polar opposites politically

But that comment of yours tells me we are also at polar opposites when it comes to being human.

You really are a scum ball..a horrible nasty individual..

RIP AS

It’s a shame he has died younger than you’d think, especially after he provided us the biggest chance for Indy we will probably ever see.

But we also cant ignore the fact he was a bit creepy towards the opposite sex.

Then again, with nothing proven legally, it doesn’t require the posts like certain individuals have been giving it on socials (X) about him the minute he passed away. He wasn’t quite Jimmy Saville or Rolf Harris!

RIP

According to the Cambridge dictionary a `colony` is `a country or area controlled politically by a more powerful country`. Given that Westminster is always going to be controlled by a majority of English MPs from a Unionist party is that not the situation Scotland is in?

Your post implies that the Scottish vote has tipped the balance and changed who is in power in Westminster?

Can you give me examples of when the mps Scotland voted for, actually changed what government took power in Westminster, ie who would have assumed power had Scotland’s vote not been included please?

I’m 50 years old and can’t think of any in my lifetime

`A sell out by your own folk` is a bit of a misrepresentation of the Treaty of Union. Did they hold a referendum in 1707?

‘Can you give me examples of when the mps Scotland voted for, actually changed what government took power in Westminster, ie who would have assumed power had Scotland’s vote not been included please?’

October 1974 is in your lifetime DBP if you’re 50.

Harold Wilson won a majority of 3. Without his 41 Scottish MPs, he wouldn’t have had a majority.

Furthermore, Wilson and later Jim Callaghan lost their majority and relied on SNP support to keep them in power until the SNP dropped the sword of Damocles on Callaghan’s head and allowed Maggie T in.

So I guess - by Wee Eck’s or Cambridge dictionary’s definition - England was a Scottish colony from 1974-1979. Scotland also represented the UK in 2 world cups in that era.

Haha!

So basically what your saying is that because I didn’t take part in the vote when I was 2 months old… from that point on, my vote (or anyone from Scotland for that matter) hasn’t had any real influence to affect the decision of which party governed us

Nice

You weren’t born in 1707 (and I guess Wee Eck wasn’t either), but you’re still whinging about it.

I guess you missed the July 4th 2024 election, but Scotland has the government it voted for now. I guess you also missed the Tony Blair/Gordon Brown years.

So based on the question at hand, are you saying Tony Blair wouldn’t have been in power if Scotland hadn’t voted for Labour?

PS don’t think I’ve ever moaned about 1707, but feel free to show me a post where I have and I’ll happily apologise

DBP,

The 1707 reference was aimed at Wee Eck (who mentioned it in consecutive posts) rather than yourself.

Regarding Tony Blair, I’m just saying Scotland voted for him 3 times and got him 3 times. Scotland voted for Keir Starmer and we’ve got him. But apparently it’s not enough for Scotland to get the government it voted for, we need England to not get what it voted for - Nat logic.

Jake,

It seems natural that a thread about Alex Salmond might touch upon the issue to which he devoted his life. It’s what he would’ve wanted.

So you’ve given examples of where we got the government we voted, not because we voted for them per se, but because our choice happened to agree with the choice made by England/Wales (which we would have gotten even if we voted differently)

No, I used ‘it’ to refer to both Scotland and England.

I would have used the traditional she/her pronouns, but I’m not sure if you’re allowed to assume the gender of a place or a ship nowadays. So I went for the woke non-binary ‘it’.

The whole of the UK has got Keir Starmer as their PM. So you can take that ‘we’ to mean Brits, Scots, Fifers, Pars Fans, whoever.

Salmond was a very bitter loser in 2014, and his depiction of the mob intimidation of BBC staff as joyous was pathetic.
As for his oratorical skills during the Indy battle ,the only notable speech was Gordon Brown’s unscripted tub thumper on the eve of the vote…

It’s Tom Hunter who’s paying for it and certainly no nationalist.
I’m sure his motives though are genuine as he did respect Alex Salmond as a guy just believing in his country becoming independent but a man who wasn’t afraid to make friends on the other side of the table too.

Happy to accept the "Sir" title is a clue....but as a true Scot, he stood up to the plate.

Man enough to put personal beliefs aside.

Comments from everyone`s favourite blog

“Alba Party general secretary Christopher McEleny said: “Lots of private individuals with means approached offering to help.
“Out of respect I won’t name them all but one I will mention is Loganair.
“They contacted us to say they were standing ready with a flight and would fully staff it and fly over and said as a Scottish airline they would feel privileged to do that.

The silence from the SNP when Alex was acquitted was a real eye opener for me.
Joanna Cherry was about the only MP who stood by him as she saw the injustice as a QC herself.
So many of her colleagues were too scared to say anything to protect themselves.

I don’t think Alex may have been agreeable to all who met him as he admitted himself but he was the finest politician our country produced not only in power but I’d say in 30 years.
He was always ‘on the ball’

Having read the trumped up charges that got flung out when went to court (allegedly brushing his hand on a woman`s knee while her husband was also in the car, touching a woman`s back as she went up the stairs and suchlike), I can only imagine what these accusations that have waited 40 years till after he died will be like.

There is no level the UK Establishment won`t stoop to smear his name, even in death.

I hope David Davis uses Parliamentary Privilege to name his accusers
