List some music intros which never fail to lift your mood. Here are mine, in no particular order:-
Sultans of Swing - Dire Straits
Hotel California - Eagles
Whisky in the Jar - Thin Lizzy
Layla - Eric Clapton
Samba Pa Ti - Santana
Start me up - Rolling Stones
I make no apology for the fact that that all these tunes are getting on a bit in years, just like me.

I would agree that there are several Stones songs that would be strong contenders. "Gimme Shelter" would surely top the list, I think.
Pink Floyd`s "Money" must get points for originality.
For unforgettable intro guitar riffs, Chicago`s "25 or 6 to 4" and "I`m a Man"; Ten Years After`s "Love like a man"; Led Zeppelin`s "Whole lotta love"...
Other contenders...
Massive Attack... "Unfinished sympathy"
Gorillaz...... "Feel Good Inc"
Fleetwood Mac... "Albatross"
Beach Boys... "Wouldn`t it be nice"
10cc.... "Dreadlock Holiday"
Plastic Bertrand... "Ca plane pour moi"
Lou Reed... "Walk on the wild side"...
Doobie Brothers.... "China Groove"
And let`s not forget...
Men at Work... "Down Under"...

Hells Bells by AC/DC and I think somebody mentioned Enter Sandman by Metallica .
Both happen to be walk ons for sports teams with Hells Bells played by St Pauli as they walk out at Millerntor and Enter Sandman by VIrginia Tech Hokies in American College Football .
Have a look on You Tube at VT Hokies coming out to Enter Sandman at Lane Stadium it is amazing 110,000 people jumping up and down it really is a fantastic sight and must be amazing to be in amongst and an experience to remember.

It`s probably fair to say that almost all well known songs have a good intro. It`s what makes them well known. It also increases their potential to be used in films and TV shows.
Great intros don`t always translate into great songs. For example, I always think Highway to Hell is let down by the chorus.

There`s so much good stuff out there that you really lose out if you limit yourself to only a couple of genres. Prime example is Alannah Myles - stylistically she`s not normally my bag but the Black Velvet bass line is pure filth!

I didn`t realise they`ve massively shortened the intro on the official music video (and presumably the radio version too). I`m convinced there`s a video with the full version that has pillars that light up with the drums at the start. Did I imagine this??
Edit - the video with pillars is That Golden Rule.

`A Small Fruit Song` by Al Stewart.
The song is just 2 minutes long and the intro takes up all but 25 seconds of it. Apart from being a pleasant little melody, it is worth sitting through the intro just to get to the ingenious punchline in the short lyric.

Indeed, I saw a programme on the history of Motown and virtually all their hits in the sixties and early seventies were recorded with their own in house session band, the Funk Brothers, providing backing for the vocalists. Didn’t just play what they were telt either, they’d come with ideas on how to get the best out of a song.
Another session band, who were for hire, were the Wrecking Crew based in Los Angeles. They did a lot off stuff on the Beach Boys classic album Pet Sounds. (I Know this as the Beeb did a series on classic albums..)
They also featured on loads of other recordings for many other artists, far too many to list here but you’d know most of them!
A couple of the band went on to have solo careers, Glen Campbell being one.
