OK, now that most of the diddy teams have returned home (England are still hanging in there),😀 who do you think will win the Euros.
Spain have been the pick of the group stage, but I think Germany will find a way to beat them - probably on penalties,

England or maybe Italy if they can get past the Swiss. They have both started relatively poorly but so often in tournament football it`s about feeling your way into the competition and progressing while still having another gear to go into. Of course it could be that England, in the current set up, really just aren`t that good but they have some of the best players in the world and if it clicks for them then they can beat anyone.
As for Italy I wonder if in two weeks we`ll be looking back at how they were one minute from being knocked out in the group stage and now here they are retaining their title as champions.
Now there are better teams than England or Italy on the other side of the draw but they are going to have to go deep into their respective wells two maybe even three times just to make it to the final. Maybe that`ll mean they`ll be flying and supremely confident going into the final or they`ll be physically and mentally worn out.
I sincerely hope my prediction is wrong.
And although my eyes were open
They just might as well be closed

Neither was I but we did hit the post and gift them a goal although Shaqiri took it well.
This has to be one of the worst Italian teams in recent times, though. In saying that they haven`t been to a World Cup since 2014 which seems strange to say.

The Swiss are nothing spectacular, just well organised, no superstars, tactically astute with a good manager, everything that Scotland were not. What an opportunity we missed in this competition. I really think that we should bring in a foreign coach. Bertie Vogts had no chance at the time but with the current crop of players I think we could do a lot better. Mogadon man Clarke had had is day…..hopefully..

Italy were terrible, they looked like a team that had never played together before, and in fact probably haven`t. Spalleti made 6 changes from the previous game and he had also shuffled the pack in the other group games. The Swiss on the other hand have had a consistent group of players for a while. I`d say there is very little difference in the individual quality of the players.
The German penalty was ridiculous and the offside so so tight. You can`t eliminate the subjectiveness of handball and other decisions, let the on-field officials makes decisions and just get on with it.

Hopefully Arsene Wenger manages to push through his proposed amendment to the offside rule because to have a goal disallowed for a toe being offside is ludicrous. The handball decision was a joke. Innocuous, accidental, unavoidable and at point blank range - I’ve said it all before. Application of the rules blah blah blah- then the rules are wrong- just plain wrong.
As for Italy- struggling to understand how a team that won the tournament, deservedly, only 3 years ago can become so insipid.

Agree with your thoughts but even if the new rule is introduced there are still going to be margin calls decided by millimetres.
VAR was supposed to enhance the game but it’s the only thing it’s done is ruin it.
I’d like to see a time limit introduced on VAR calls, 30 seconds. If a decision can’t be reached then the on field decision applies.

I wonder if they could have some kind of tolerance applied to offside decisions by VAR?
So on field decision can only be overruled if it`s wrong by (?) 5cm.
|
|
|
|
Topic Originator: d3monstrate

All that will happen then is the decisions ruled out at 5.1cm will be claimed to be harsh... There has to be a line somewhere so there will always be tight calls. Only way to stop it is to remove offside...
As for the handball, with incidents like the Denmark one, rather than a penalty, if its clear there`s no intent, is to give an indirect freekick...
|
|
|
|
Topic Originator: Bucuresti Par

Handball, and intent is also subjective though. Presumably VAR/Oliver thought he raised his arm with the intent to block the cross? Otherwise, if it was believed to be a natural position for his arm, and from such a short distance - how can you award a penalty?
Just go with the on field decision! The game doesn`t need VAR.

Fair to compare Slovakia to Scotland?
Is a midfield of Gilmour, McGinn & McTominay worse than Duda, Lobotka & Kucka? Gilmour isn`t at the level of Lobotka - but no reason why he can`t get there.
We don`t have a defender of Skriniar`s pedigree but otherwise?
I don`t see a big difference in terms of individual quality, but a massive difference in terms of tactics and mindset.

I used to like Southgate, he started off putting out a first eleven on merit and was reaping the rewards for some time.
He’s bottled it this campaign though, by refusing to use the other players at his disposal- Palmer and Gordon for example have had belters of seasons. Instead he knackers out Bellingham, Foden etc.
The style of play is also brutal. I usually want them to progress but they deserve to be knocked out.

England have a decent team but Kane is the weak link, not even winning many free kicks. He’s either carrying an injury or his legs have gone but either way he’s barely contributing anything and not Moving the defenders to make space for other etc.
Alas Kane is untouchable so until he retires this might be the best they get.

Halfway through the second half and yet to make a substitution, when you have:
Palmer
Gordon
Watkins
Eze
All on the bench who have shown up this season.
Embarrassing stuff.
Palmer has come on, only because Trippier injured and they’ve stuck Saka left back when TAA is on the bench?

Thing is it’s not a dreadful display by England. They’ve hit the post (twice?) and made plenty of good runs into the Slovakia box. Bellingham’s goal was a cracker. The pundits wrote them off too quickly but they heap so much pressure on them right from the start of the campaign.
Into ET and it’s all about the next 30 mins and god forbid penalties.

The young boy too, 16 I think? Some talent. They`re set up so effectively, willing to take risks in the final 3rd and knowing they can mop up most counters effectively.
Fair fcks to Georgia. Gave it a right go, just beaten by a better team. Their fans were great too. Spain have some team but shyte fans, offer nothing at all even when winning.

I`m going to go against popular opinion here and say England deserved to go through yesterday. They didn`t play particularly well but dominated possession and came very close on several occasions before scoring with their first two strikes on target. Slovakia limited themselves to defending their lead with some "hefty" tackles and the odd counterattack. I thought they were fortunate to avoid at least one red card.
England will definitely need to up their game if they hope to reach the semi-finals. Switzerland are a much better team than Slovakia. Well organised, everyone knows their role (Southgate take note) and superbly marshalled by Manuel Akanji in defence. If they were to somehow win this tournament, they would be the poorest and dullest since Greece in 2004.

I agree GG Riva. England were poor but you cannot say Slovakia were better. They spent most of the 90 minutes in a “ low block “ which England struggled to break down because of their insistence to play a slow build up from the back. It’s no coincidence that their 2 goals came from lobbing the ball onto Toneys head. British teams are crap at “ continental “ football. They should stick to what they’re good at. Direct doesn’t necessarily mean aimless long balls.
I also think England will fare a bit better when they come up against a team who have a bit more of the ball.

Your dream could well turn into a nightmare before Saturday is done, TOWK. 😀
What puzzles many of us is how a team containing so many talented players can play such pedestrian football. That`s 4 games now, and England haven`t looked much better than Scotland, yet they`re still 4/1 joint favs with Spain to win the tournament. Germany is 9/2. To my mind, both Spain and Germany are playing football several levels above anything we`ve seen so far from England.
Crush the Swiss, aye? Wishful thinking..... daydreams fly 😉

Believe me GG, I have no desire to see England win the trophy and would be ecstatic if the Swiss dumped them out on Saturday afternoon not this England team is vastly experienced at the business end of tournaments. They are zeroing in on their third semi from the last four tournaments. Extraordinary.
I know, mate. Just pulli3ng your leg. 😉
I don`t like games being decided by penalties but that was high drama last night. Like him or loathe him, Ronaldo showed a lot of cajones in stepping up to take the first kick. You had to feel for Oblak. All the talk before the pens was about him being Slovenia`s hero and he couldn’t get near one, whereas Costa, with no great expectations, saved the lot. Fitbaw eh?

Think the Dutch against the Romanians could be a tight affair. Wouldn`t be surprised to see it go either way.
In the later match I fancy the Austrians to beat Turkey. They beat them 6-1 a couple of months ago albeit in a friendly.Turkey had 11 yellows in their last match so must have some suspensions to deal with?

To be fair, all football nations probably have a domestic reference they use to compare with something they see on the pitch. In Scotland we talk about a mazy dribble through the penalty box as an Archie Gemmell moment (or for Pars fans, a Barry Nic moment).
It was a great save, however you define it. And unlike Banks` save, it won the match for his team.

I`d take that GG as it means England haven`t made the final but after seeing the Dutch so impressively dismantle Romania I think I`d rather see them make it all the way.
Think it`s about time UEFA and indeed FIFA at the world cup rethink the two yellows leads to a one match suspension. A whole host of players will miss the semis because of picking two yellow cards over five games and with how easy it can be these days to pick up a yellow it seems very harsh.

I could be wrong but is there a flaw in the rules with suspensions at the moment.
Example is the Spain Germany game, Carvajal got booked earlier on which if I recall meant he was suspended for the semi final.
They go ahead and in the dying minute just deliberately grabs Musiala takes the additional yellow, leading to a red which doesn’t make a difference as he was banned for the semi anyway?

Of course Konsa for Guehi is the only personnel change so playing that way could have surprised the Swiss and gave them something extra to think about. Instead it was leaked on Mknday or Tuesday that they were going to three at the back, and so they`ve had almost a week to come up with a game plan. Great stuff from the English media again.

Hopefully today`s games are better than yesterday`s snoozefests. England to scrape through again unfortunately and I`ve got a sneaky feeling that this evening`s match will be very entertaining for some reason.
I reckon Turkey will have a good crack at it with an all out attack mentality, this will result in them either gubbing the Dutch by 3 or 4, or for the Dutch to score against the run of play then hold onto their lead playing boringly defencive.
I`m always wrong though,as well as being an extreme Jonah so don`t wage any bets going on my predictions lol.

Akanji took a terrible penalty but every one of England`s spot kicks were expertly dispatched. They`ll certainly be full of confidence if any of their last two games go to penalties. It`ll come down to Spain or France stopping them then I`d have to think France would have a better chance of resisting them than Spain who I worry don`t have the streetsmarts to see off England.

France look awful, Spain have been brilliant going forward but weak defensively.
I fancy England to beat either the Dutch or the Turks (who have been massively disasvantaged by Demiral`s ban), then the final is a toss up.
They were favourites for a good reason - they`ve progressed to the semis without a single good performance. That`s the mark of a very good team.

What makes Germany`s penalty claim any more legit than Scotland`s. We just accepted the decision with good grace but the Germans have to organise a petition to get the game replayed and hound the referee, Taylor, out of the country. You would hope the host nation would act with more good grace, rather than act like spoiled kids.

3 top-drawer goals tonight:
- super cross by Mbappe standing still
- ridiculous equalizer by 16-year old
- 2 fabulous touches by Olmo on 3d
Why do I think we will see anti-football tomorrow?

At the age of 25 he`s the third top goal scorer for France. He`ll become the leading scorer in the next couple of years. He`s scored in two world cup final matches and scorer a hat trick in the last one. I`d say he`s shone for France.

Armstrong stepping in front of defender and getting calf wiped out - no penalty

Anyone who`s played football at any level knows that`s never a penalty.
If Gary Neville says it isn`t when it`s for England, that`s enough to highlight how clear it is that it should never be given.

Said it previously. This England team is made of different minerals to previous incarnations. Heart, desire, spirit, cajones, call it what you want but this English team has it in spades. The Spaniards will have their work cut out if they are to triumph on Sunday.
You certainly would be brave to bet against Keir Starmers first new years honour list including a knighthood for Southgate.

Itll be interesting to see how both teams play, Spain will be all too aware of the threat England have up front, but will want to be on the front foot... And going on what`s went before, Southgate will let them, looking for Kane to fall over at any point the ball goes near him as usual

It's the classic 'a free kick anywhere else on the pitch'. I think the biggest issue is that in no way was it `clear and obvious`. The ref was utter rank, as bad as anything we saw in league 1

A player kicks the ball at waist height, cleanly but too high, in his follow through he kicks the sole of a defender. Panel says no penalty, lady ref says no penalty, var says have a look, so ref gives it. It makes the game farcical and a lottery

I did think it was a penalty. If a player puts his studs out and catches a player as he clears the ball upfield, it`s inevitably a free kick and very often a yellow card. Why should it be different when it`s an attacker having a shot in the penalty box?

Its not like Dumfries has gone in studs up, waist high and recklessly - hes dangled a leg out at knee height (same height as Kanes foot), side on and been booted in the underside of his foot trying to make a block……Kane then goes down like hes been shot and gets the pen - when a ref on the panel says its not a pen or even a “clear and obvious” error, then it shows how ridiculous the decision was…..

It`s all subjective opinions, I suppose. I`m in Italy just now and watched it on national TV. The panel were unanimous that it was a clear and obvious penalty both at halftime and after the game, and I can assure you none of them are England fans. A former Serie A ref also agreed with the decision.
I think it was harsh, but in the VAR age of forensic analysis, we`re going to get such decisions. Arry probably accentuated his tumble to make the challenge look worse than it was. Silly challenge by Dumfries but Kane probably scores if he doesn`t make it...

I wonder what the ref saw on the monitor that he hadn`t seen on the pitch? I`m curious about when `clear and obvious error` applies.
Lots of England fans are citing some heinous offence Koeman got away with against England over 30 years ago as justification for the decision!

I don`t understand the view that it`s an obvious penalty. It seems like Dumfries has two options.
1. Don`t attempt to block and give Kane a free shot.
2. Attempt to block and give away a penalty.
I don`t see how Dumfries can attempt to block without `raising his studs` - the only other thing he can do is take a full blooded swing which is way more dangerous.
It also doesn`t make sense that Kane gets to take a free swing because he`s taking a shot and Dumfries isn`t because he`s defending. You see fouls given when a tackler is reckless in the `follow through` despite winning the ball, so why the difference with shots when you might also endanger an opponent? ultimately both feet were at the same height - the height of the ball.
To me this seems like `normal contact` - I don`t think one player was acting more dangerously than the other. And, when viewed at normal speed, I really really don`t see how not awarding a penalty can be considered a clear and obvious error - especially given some incidents that were not even reviewed like the potential penalty on Armstrong.
Certainly if VAR had not intervened I don`t think that incident would have been discussed at half-time, other than perhaps showing it as a `highlight` of a decent chance for England.
Whilst the decision may not be corrupt (despite Zwayer`s previous), or incompetent (since a weak argument can be made for its correctness), it`s definitely inconsistent with how VAR is intended to be used.
