On the verge of winning a Serie A medal. Billy Gilmour too if he`s played enough to merit one.

Gilmour will be fine, he`s played plenty. SM though has scored 11 goals. That`s impressive stuff. Che Adams has done well too, scoring 9 goals in a mid table side.

Just read that in Serie A, if two teams finish at the top level on points, there is a one-match off play-off for the title with the team with the best goal difference getting home advantage! At the moment Napoli have a three-point advantage but Inter have a better GD by ten.

The last time this happened was in 1962. Bologna beat Inter 2-0 in the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

It would be played at a neutral venue, the home ‘advantage’ is actually just using the home dressing room/dugouts within the neutral stadium.

Was at the Napoli match yesterday and watched the Inter match on tv with a reporter for one of the bigger sport channels who covered local reactions so was regularly on the air while we were there. Aside from him entertaining my wee boy for a couple hours he told me an about this as well as I had never heard of this. He told me that the play off would be in Rome if they finish on the same points.

In that case BBC Sport have got it wrong!

`Should both teams finish the season tied on points then they would face each other in a one-off match - played at the home of the team with the better goal difference - to determine the champions.`

It seems quite odd to effectively not recognise superior goal difference. I wonder if this happens anywhere else? Even considering head-to-head results might have been fairer.

Head to head is the first tie breaker I think, but the games between the two ended up being equal. Goal difference is the second tier breaker when it`s not vital league positions I think (so not for title, European qualification, relegation and play offs etc).

I think both games were 1 all draws so that`s moot.

Man Utd played him as a defensive midfielder wheras his best position is that of an attacking midfielder. He`s already adored by the Napoli fans.

Today Inter won 2-0 at Torino in a game interrupted by heavy rain whilst Napoli drew 2-2 at home to Genoa. McTominay was credited with assists for both Napoli`s goals. They are now only one point ahead of Inter with two games to play.

Napoli: 78 points

Inter Milan: 77 points

Napoli drew 2-2 with Genoa yesterday, conceding a late equalizer, which narrowed their lead over Inter. Inter capitalized with a 2-0 win over Torino, intensifying the title race.

Remaining Fixtures:

Napoli: Away to Parma (fighting relegation), then home to Cagliari.

Inter Milan: Home to Lazio (chasing Champions League qualification), then away to Como.

Under Antonio Conte Napoli has the league`s best defense, conceding only 25 goals. Scott McTominay has been immense and regularly contributes significantly to their attacking play. Inter`s attack is the most potent in the league, with 73 goals scored.Manager Simone Inzaghi is rotating his squad to maintain fitness, especially with a Champions League final against PSG on May 31.Inter`s recent form includes a solid win over Torino, keeping pressure on Napoli.

The bookies have Inter as slight favorites, with odds around 17/20, implying a 54% chance of winning. Napoli Odds are approximately 100/30, giving them a 23% chance.

According to Opta`s super computer, Inter Milan had a 79.2% chance of winning the title at the start of the season.

While Inter Milan holds a slight edge in odds Napoli`s remaining fixtures are probably more favourable at first glance. Before the weekend fixtures the burning question in the Italian media was will inter stick with trying to win the league or twist and focus on trying to win the champions league which PSG are firm favourites.

With French Ligue 1 decided, PSG will probably be resting their important players. PSG secured the title back in April and the triumph marks PSG`s 13th French league title and their fourth consecutive championship.

c'mon the pars

Inter at 17/20 are huge favourites if you have your odds correct and Napoli are 100/30. That’s a really big price for a team that is currently leading tbh.

Yeah, 17/20 on Inter is short considering they are second, bookies must fancy them. But 100/30 on Napoli was a massive price especially with the form they`ve been in. Feels like they were being underestimated and I couldn`t resist a wee flutter on it myself considering the fixtures both have. Maybe the odds are swayed by Inter`s home record? Maybe Napoli dropping points to Genoa who are 13th at home also swayed things. Although the odds quoted were the odds immediately after the Napoli game last night.Probably changed a bit by now I would assume.

Napoli are best priced at 4/11 and Inter 11/4.

Bookies wouldn`t be in business long if they were going 17/20 and 100/300 in a two-horse race.

I`ve no idea how inter are favourites. They`ve got to play lazio who are only outside the CL places on goal difference. Napoleon have 1 mid table team and a team who are almost safe.

If you can get decent odds on napoli I`d advise you to put money on them.

I take it that 100/30 was at the start of the season as Napoli are 2/7 at best now (having checked 5 betting apps) with 2 games to go where they ‘only’ have to match Inters results?

Also Opta has them at 71% to win now when they were around 85% before last night

I meant to reply to this at the time, wee eck, but it slipped my mind. Italian football doesn`t use GD to determine league placing precisely to avoid the kind of conspiracy theories we saw in 2002, when Rangers beat the Pars 6-1 at Ibrox in the last game to win the league by a single goal from Celtic.

In Serie A, if two teams finish the season with the same number of points at the top of the table, the following applies:

As of the 2022–23 season onward:

If first and second place are tied on points, there will be a one-off playoff match (called a "spareggio scudetto") to decide the champion.

It is a single match, played at a neutral venue.

If it ends in a draw after 90 minutes, it goes straight to penalties — no extra time.

This rule was reintroduced starting with the 2022–23 season to avoid relying on head-to-head records or goal difference to decide the title.

The most recent "spareggio scudetto"—a playoff to determine the Serie A champion—occurred on June 7, 1964, when Bologna defeated Inter Milan 2–0 at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. This remains the only instance in Serie A history where the title was decided by a playoff match.

Since the reintroduction of the playoff rule in the 2022–23 season, no such match has taken place. However, as of May 2025, Inter Milan and Napoli are tied at the top of the Serie A table with 71 points each, with five matches remaining. If they finish the season level on points, a "spareggio scudetto" would be held to determine the champion.

The 1964 playoff was notable not only for its rarity but also for the emotional circumstances surrounding it. Bologna's president, Renato Dall'Ara, passed away from a heart attack just days before the match, adding a poignant backdrop to their victory.

Therefore, unless the 2024–25 season concludes with Inter and Napoli tied on points, the 1964 Bologna vs. Inter match remains the most recent and only "spareggio scudetto" in Serie A history.

c'mon the pars

De Silvestri is the club captain, and was on the bench for the final. Ferguson has only deputised as captain on a couple of occasions in his absence.

Napoli were interested a year ago but didn`t make an offer.
Was wondering where he would fit into the Napoli side and couldn`t see Anguissa being displaced by him but with Anguissa set to leave Napoli he is certainly a logical replacement, possibly even an upgrade as I`ve found Anguissa to be inconsistent, brilliant one game and anonymous the next.

Sorry, but that`s nonsense, desparado. Parma are in a relegation battle and scrapped for every ball. Napoli knew they only had to match Inter`s result to stay in pole position, so that was a great point last night. Inter were the big losers, twice being pegged back, with a helping hand from VAR for Lazio who are desperately fighting for the last CL place, which they`re unlikely to get now.

Just as important as Napoli"s and Inter`s results was Cagliari`s 3-0 win v Venezia, meaning they are safe. It`s 99% certain they will be partying this week, and Napoli will beat them in front of their own fans to clinch the Scudetto next week. How much harder would that game have been if Cagliari still needed a point to guarantee their safety? A great achievement by Conte and his squad, considering they lost Osimhen and Kvaratskhelia. Brilliant for Scott and Billy to get medals, too

To be fair GG they are only top because Lazio got a very dodgy pen in the last minute.

Drawing your third and second last games in a title run in is in football parlance “ bottling it “. Napoli are very lucky to still be top.
They should win their last game now though I would think and become champions but they were literally a kick of the ball away from blowing it….

What an opportunity we missed in 2014.

Napoli will host Cagliari at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. Cagliari`s recent form has been inconsistent: 2 wins and 3 losses.

Their defense has been suspect conceding on average of 1.46 goals per game, while their attack averages just over 1 goal per match

Inter Milan will play away against Como, a team on an impressive unbeaten streak under manager Cesc Fàbregas .

If both teams finish level on points, a Scudetto playoff match will be held to determine the champion. Given the tight race, the possibility of a historic Scudetto playoff remains a strong possibility.

That`s a very harsh comment. Had you said that after last week`s home draw with midtable Genoa, who had nothing to play for, it would have been justified, but Parma fought very hard and played very well. Winning the Scudetto this season, minus their two most influential players from 2 seasons ago will be a remarkable achievement.

I`d argue that the real "bottlers" in recent weeks have been Inter. Lost at Bologna and at home to Roma before twice surrendering a lead to Lazio last night. Perhaps they`ve been distracted by their CL campaign, but they have by far the strongest squad in Serie A and they really should have won it in a canter.

I wouldn`t say Napoli is bottling it at all. They are grinding out results and that is what champions do.Drawing two tough games under pressure near the end of a title is grinding out results when every team is fighting tooth and nail for their each individual cause.

Napoli are unbeaten in their last 5 games and have kept accumulating points. That’s what keeps you at the top. You rarely see a team cruise to the title without a scare here and there over the course of a season.

The fact Napoli are still leading shows their consistency over the course of the season. They still control their destiny. A win against a team they smashed 4–0 last time they met back in September and have not lost in the last 5 meetings between the two(3 wins,2 draws). I still think they will get the job done and be crowned champions.

One team who could be accused of bottling it this season is Ajax. They had a 9 point lead and needed 6 points from their final 5 games to win the title and it went as follows

Utrecht 4-0 Ajax
Ajax 1-1 Sparta Rotterdam
Ajax 0-3 NEC Nijmegen
Groningen 2-2 Ajax
Ajax 2-0 Twente

They lost the title by a point to PSV who won their last 7 games.

For those who may be interested, Como v Inter and Napoli v Cagliari have breen brought forward from next Sunday to Friday evening to allow Inter an extra 2 days to prepare for their CL showdown v PSG. Both games kick off at 19.45 BST.

There was obviously no need to move Napoli`s game but the Italian federation would not want to be seen to be giving Napoli the advantage of an extra 2 days` rest and knowing exactly what they had to do to be crowned champions. You may also have noticed that the Parma - Napoli game was held up for about 5 mins last night until the ref was notified that the Inter - Lazio game was ready to kick off.

Another curious note - the coaches of Napoli, Inter, Parma and Lazio were all red carded last night. 😄

KO in 20 mins. It should be a formality for Napoli, Cagliari are safe from the drop so the won`t be busting a gut or expected to. Inter, on the other hand have to win in Como, with one eye on the CL final next week. A big ask, but there are no certainties in football.

Conti said he doesn`t want to see or hear any mention of the number 4, signalling Napoli54th Scudetto.

Great to see Scott and Billy doing so well, the other Scot`s in Serie A, Ferguson, Adams, Doig also not doing badly. I`ve been watching Gilmour in this match, the way he busts a gut to get into position to make himself available to take a pass off a team mate that`s under pressure, then one touch to control and the next to zip the ball off to another team mate.

I knew as soon as the ball went up to Lukaku, that he would put it in the net, a great player. I read a fantastic piece by him about his childhood, it`s well worth a read

Absolutely incredible to see two Scots win the Serie A and one win the cup. The commentator is extremely reluctant to call him Scottish. ‘the lad from Lancaster…’ Just say he’s Scottish! Great to see how important he has been to Napoli. Man U should never have let him go.

Thought Napoli were absolutely spot on and managed the game plan to perfection. Even after Inter scored, they never panicked, stuck to their structure and just kept ticking over. Gilmour was class in the middle, kept things neat and tidy, always available. McTominay though… different level. Absolute engine and brought real composure when it mattered. The guy silenced all the doubters anyway. “not good enough for United” they said, now he’s bossing Serie A and looking like one of the most complete midfielders in Europe. He also won player of the year.

Lukaku did what Lukaku does best and bullies defenders and buries chances. That goal was a peach. And defensively they were solid. Don’t remember them being in any real danger.

All in all, just a proper team performance. Enjoyed watching it.

What an achievement for McTominay and Gilmour it`s amazing to see two Scots lifting a Serie A title. First time that’s happened in 120 years! Jack Diment and James Squair won Juventus’s first ever top-flight title in 1905. Gilmour’s numbers are tidy as well. Nearly 69 passes a game, 88% completion, and 1.1 key passes a match. Quietly becoming a vital part of that team even when he doesn’t start every game.

Buzzing for them both.
