I get how tough it is to sign these types of players but it is still really disappointing. We`re heading in to the 2nd game of the season with one fit striker. Every other team seems to be getting what they need. Given goalscorers are a premium, the board are going to have to dig deep. Just don`t see it happening and can see us relying on Cooper for goals when Kane is missing. Sigh.

Its been said often enough. The players we want still have 3 weeks to assess offers. We will have several lined up and get what wants to come.

I wonder if this could be the Bulgarian striker that was mentioned a month or two ago? Whether it is or not, any new striker would be a very welcome addition right now.

Weāre not that desperate surely!
Iāve suspected a striker coming from outwith Scotland for a long time now, and I suspect this will be the case. Obviously the Bulgarian striker was rumoured by various jurnos a few months back, weāll really just need to wait and see.

I am back here in Oz, wishing that I could be at East End today to watch the Airdrie game.
I always loved that first home game of the season. It was so special - the sense of anticipation, and the inevitable question... what has changed?
I can almost taste the pie and the Bovril. However, the catering at EEP has changed, and now, perhaps, you will all be served prawn sandwiches and Chardonnay!

"while Dunfermline Athletic have also intimated they would come to the negotiating table if given encouragement.
Doing business with a Championship rival, though, is extremely unlikely"
"Peterboroughās offer has been the highest thus far ā verbal or written ā but hasnāt tempted Saints to sell"
"It would take a significant six-figure fee to persuade Saints to cash-in and reinvest the money in another centre forward."
i doubt it was him that Lennon was talking about on Thursday.

Never seen the Kirk transfer as realistic given the money St Johnstone spent on him from hearts and us being in the same division.

According to the The Star (Sheffield local paper) there appears to be a number of pieces to their transfer conundrum as Sheffield Utd are wanting to sign a defender. Utd have used up their allocation of exceptions so if they can offload one of them it frees up the chance to sign their target.
As mentioned our own James Bord is involved via the data analytics firm. Here`s what the Star has exclusively reported.
"If not, there is a secondary avenue open to them via an exception scheme, but clubs are only entitled to so many slots and United are understood to have filled all theirs with the signings of wildcards Christian Nwachukwu, Jefferson Caceres, Ehije Ukaki and Mihail Polendakov, all signed this year from the Bulgarian league.
The Star understands that discussions have taken place amongst the hierarchy about a possible solution, should it be needed, which would allow a slot to be freed up for ZƤtterstrƶm. James Bord, the former poker player now playing a big part in shaping Unitedās recruitment, also owns Dunfermline in Scotland, which sources suggest could be a potential destination for one player."

We absolutely need more than just a striker. There is a reason we tried to sign Easton.
We need an attacking midfielder with some quality, cooper looks much improved and will pop up with some goals but Iād question whether his general game is good enough at the top end of the championship and I didnāt see much on sat to suggest anything different.
Striker, attacking midfielder and another CB please. Another option for left wing back would be good too.

Ahā¦ā¦but can he do it on a cold windy night in Arbroath or at Lesser Hampden? š¤
All joking aside, definitely looks a player from the YouTube video doing the rounds and someone who would be a welcome addition to the squad (if rumours are true). Although Iām struggling to see where he would play, with us not playing with wingers. I think the Attacking Midfield slot, probably where we saw Easton fitting in, is the thinking here. Other option is to be used as an āoff the shoulderā type striker or moulded into a Wing Back like KRH? Although, thereās no evidence from this short video that he is defence minded.
Definitely an interesting one.

This might be the case, but if Lennon is offered a player that he knows will enhance the team, then heād be fooly to knock it backā¦..and wonāt. If he sees this lad as a better option on than say Cooper, Bray or Matty Tod then heās surely going to take it, despite it not being part of the original plan surely.

The main problem with recruiting from abroad at our level seems to be negotiating a work permit. At least Caceres already has one so that eliminates that issue. Having watched his `highlights reel` I would have thought there would be interest from English clubs if he became available.

Can`t see him playing in the attacking midfield slot when we have cooper, matty/andy, McLeod and bray all fitting in there. Looks to me like another option than Otoo on the left which is very welcome in an attacking sense.
As echoed above a striker and centre half would all we`d need after that. I`m sure we`ll start to see a few move on as well. Ngwenya etc. this could be a very fun season.

This link seems to suggest it has to be a permanent deal -

Would be a perm deal as if they loaned him the same rules apply

That`s what I thought but lots on twitter saying loan deal. That`s just social media though so probably wrong. Sheffield Utd fans suggesting he`s not that great tbh. Not sure how accurate that is as they clearly don`t know where Dunfermline is either. Not the sharpest Blades š

I think most senior players coming from the English Championship have a chamce of operating reasonably well at our level, surely?

Multi club ownership/involvement is quite interesting in these situations. Loan or permanent is maybe less important.

Surely the ramifications of a deal like this will finally convince the sceptics that getting your business completed early in the transfer window is just a fantasy for a club like ours?

I think youāre fishing slightly, Eck. We signed Gilmour early in the window and heās already proving a great bit of business, so Iām not sure itās a fantasy. It also shows there are still deals to be done throughout the window. I wonāt be casting much judgment on him until heās actually in the building and weāve seen him play. Yeboah and Hampson arrived with big expectations, Hampson was posted missing and Yeboah was a dud. Hopefully this oneās different, but weāll find out once he signs and plays.

I think we`ve probably been working on various deals but the number of variables we can`t control mean it is very difficult to get one over the line. I would have thought that was pretty obvious to someone like you, Raymie, who knows how football works.

My comment was aimed at dandys "senior" player from the English championship. He is not, he`s a youth that`s had a transfer fee paid on him in the past. My expectations of this signing sit similar to the other highly rated kid we got from Sheffield utd in January. This isn`t a massive signing or a marque, it`s a young kid who`s been bombed out after 4 months of being a Sheffield.
Andy Campbell was a million pound player back in the day, didn`t make him a good signing for us.

Signing somebody like Gilmour from League 1 and giving him the chance to play in the Championship is a lot easier than trying to sign an experienced player who has hopefully played at a higher level but will be willing to play in the Scottish Championship.
From what I`ve heard the club is desperate to get the required quality and won`t compromise despite the pressure to get things done quickly.

Thatās absolutely correct, which is why weāve signed a number of players either from lower leagues or young players with potential.
Our rivals have managed to sign more experienced players from higher leagues. That doesnāt mean they will work out but the end of August is fast approaching. I wonder why we canāt get these over the line? Itās good that we have got off to a positive start otherwise the fans would have been more vocal on this topic. We certainly need a few older heads and some creativity to go with what we have.

I`ve tried to explain why we find it hard to get them over the line. As far as I can see most of the experienced players who have been signed by Championship clubs are past their best and looking for a final pay day. We did try to sign Easton without success which just proves my point I think.
Recent rumours suggest we were interested in Kirk, who attracted interest from England, and Cosgrove, who didn`t want to return to Scotland. What can you do in the face of these kinds of obstacles? You keep on trying.

So my question still stands ā who exactly is this āmarquee signingā folk keep banging on about? Just feels like another throwaway line out of Football Manager. Gilmour was nowhere near a marquee signing, yet heās easily been our best bit of business in the last few windows.
What even makes someone a āmarqueeā anyway? Hampson came in with a fair bit of a reputation and hype. He ended up with 3 appearances totalling 36 minutes while looking bang average at best.

Weāre in a situation where lads whoāve been released from a higher level, or have that bit of experience, arenāt exactly going to rush into signing with us and I get that. That being said though weāve done well getting some business done early this time, signing Gilmour and keeping JCM. Last window we left it late, panicked, and ended up with a couple of duds. I`m hopeful weāve learned from that. So getting business early has its pros and cons and so does waiting until the 11th hour.

NL said a few weeks ago that it might take until the end of the window to get what we want. He has a better grasp of how things work that many fans do.
