DUNFERMLINE ATHLETIC PROGRESS TO PREMIER SPORTS CUP LAST 16

Pars finish as one of the 3 best runners-up after dramatic win at St Mirren

Dunfermline Athletic have qualified for the Last 16 of the Premier Sports Cup after a resilient Group C campaign that culminated in a dramatic 1-0 win away to holders St. Mirren on Sunday, which sealed their qualification into the Knockout Rounds.

Neil Lennon’s side finished the Group with 9 points and a +6 Goal Difference, enough to go through as one of the three best runners-up across all of the Groups, popping Queen`s Park to that final spot thanks to Chris Kane`s late Paisley penalty.

The Pars will now face Ross County in the Last 16 on the weekend of 15th/16th August at KDM Group East End Park, with the League One side winning their section ahead of Scottish Premiership opposition, Dundee, and fellow full-time League 1 outfit, Airdrieonians.

It was a campaign of response and growth for the Pars, who bounced back from an opening day setback to win three games in a row, score 10 goals and keep two clean sheets.

The Group got off to a difficult start at K-Park on 11th July, where Dunfermline were second best against East Kilbride and fell to a 3-0 defeat. Lewis McGrattan opened the scoring in the first half before Finlay Gray and Cammy Elliott added second-half goals. It was a tough introduction to competitive football for Season 2026-2027, but one that Lennon’s side would learn from quickly.

The response was immediate: back at KDM Group East End Park four days later, the Pars put four past Dumbarton in front of 1,375 supporters. Andrew Tod opened the scoring after pressing high, before Oli Shaw doubled the lead. Kai Kirkpatrick pulled one back for the Sons in the second half, but Dunfermline responded through Tod again and a late goal by substitute, Josh Cooper, to seal a 4-1 win and get the Group back on track.

That momentum carried into the following Tuesday as Dunfermline produced their most complete performance of the Group Stage. A 5-0 win over Cove Rangers saw Andrew Tod net twice, with Oli Shaw also grabbing a brace, including a rebound from a saved penalty. Substitute Josh Cooper added the fifth late on after once again coming off the bench to make an impact. The result moved the Pars up the table and set up a winner-takes-all final Group game with the Buddies.

That decider came at The SMiSA Stadium against Scottish Premiership side and current Premier Sports Cup holders, St. Mirren. Knowing only a win would be enough against Craig McLeish`s men, Dunfermline produced a disciplined and mature performance. Aston Oxborough was excellent in goal and the defence, marshalled by the young back three of John Tod, Sam Cleall-Harding and Luke Robinson, held firm.

With progression hanging in the balance, the breakthrough came in the 89th minute. Keith Bray was fouled in the area by Marcus Fraser and Chris Kane stepped up to slam home the penalty - straight down the middle - in front of the travelling support. The 1-0 victory sent the Pars through and confirmed another scalp over top-flight opposition in Cup competitions under Neil Lennon.

After missing out on progression last season, reaching the Knockout Rounds was a key objective for Lennon and his squad. The Group Stage showed clear development — from finding their feet against East Kilbride to dominating Cove and Dumbarton at home before, finally, matching and beating a Premiership side away when it mattered most.

The contributions came right across the squad. Andrew Tod and Oli Shaw led the scoring charts, while the impact of substitutes like Cooper, Kane, Ewan McLeod and Keith Bray proving crucial as well. Defensively, the back to back clean-sheets against Cove and St Mirren provided a strong platform to gain qualification after a tough start to Group C.

Attention now turns to the league campaign, which begins away to Inverness Caledonian Thistle this weekend, before the focus returns to the Premier Sports Cup in a couple of weeks time, with a home tie against Ross County in the Last 16 giving the Championship side a fantastic chance to have another Cup Run, this time in the League Cup, so early on into the new term.
