Motherwell showed the standard to which Dunfermline must aspire by outplaying their opponents with a controlled passing and moving game. Three down, the Pars launched a late comeback with deflected strikes from Graham and Cardle but any hopes of capping this with an equaliser were snuffed out in stoppage time when Higdon tapped home his second and Well’s fourth.

Pride comes before a fall, or so they say, and after all the hoopla about their league exploits the Pars tripped themselves up when they deservedly lost this Scottish Communities Cup tie to their lower league rivals. After losing an early goal to Linn, Buchanan seemed to have things back on track but a poor all-round performance saw them fortunate to concede only one further goal.

Jim McIntyre’s Pars seem to have stumbled upon the recipe for SPL success – score with your only shot on target, get your goalkeeper to make a brilliant save and do a lot of hard defending. A second successive sound defensive performance laid the foundation for a late smash and grab act as Paul Burns drove home with 5 minutes left to put the Pars 3rd in the table.

Paul Gallacher’s second penalty save of this fledgling season helped Dunfermline to the 3 points after Potter had been red-carded for conceding the spot-kick. Andy Kirk had scored after half an hour from a rehearsed set play but that was virtually the Pars’ only chance.

Both sides will be kicking themselves for not claming the three points in an entertaining encounter. The Pars deserved their first half lead through Andy Kirk’s delicate finish, and after a Tansey equaliser which was cruelly deflected, Kirk nodded the Pars ahead again. A Gallacher fumble let Hayes score, some poor defending conceded a third and it took a marvellous Martin Hardie free-kick to square things at the death.
