Dunfermline Athletic Football Club will welcome Aberdeen to KDM Group East End Park on Saturday 3rd October for `A Match for Mo`, a special occasion celebrating the outstanding service of long-serving and newly retired Kitman, Mo Hutton.
The match, which kicks off at 2.00pm, will be the final event held to mark Mo`s Testimonial Year and his fantastic service to the Club. It will provide supporters, players, staff, former colleagues and friends with the opportunity to come together and recognise everything he has contributed to the Club over the years.
A Lifetime Of Service - Same Club, Same Commitment
Mo has been a hugely valued member of the Dunfermline Athletic family, working tirelessly behind the scenes and becoming a familiar and much-loved figure to generations of players, managers, staff and supporters.
Across 33 years, Mo has:
- Served under 17 Managers
- Witnessed 5 Promotions
- Been a part of 3 Scottish Cup Finals, 1 League Cup Final and 1 Challenge Cup Final
- Worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure Players, Staff and Fans were proud of their Football Club
A Chef to trade, who worked at the North British Hotel and ran his own Pub, Mo brought standards to Dunfermline Athletic long before they were fashionable. Long before Clubs invested heavily in nutrition, Mo was already feeding the players properly!
His philosophy in his final season in the role remained unchanged:
"You need organisation behind the scenes, I think that`s it. You need people behind the scenes to just keep it right. If the manager wants to train twice a day or even away to Bulgaria, times can change so you`ve just got to adapt. That`s what you do as a kit man, just make sure it`s right."
With the support of his trusted team - "I have Bobby and Sammi and my grandson Jack, who muck in and get on with it" - Mo maintained the highest standards throughout his tenure.
Stories, Pranks and Legends
Having served under 17 Managers, Mo has unique insights into their different approaches.
He recalls Jimmy Calderwood bringing European sophistication: "He brought a new sort of freshness to training. Everything was with the ball with him. Some of his drills, I used to sit and take notes and take them to the training for myself at night."
But it was Jim Jefferies who impressed Mo most during the Club`s darkest hour in Administration:
"One of the best was Jim Jefferies. I don`t think we could have had a better man in charge when they hit the Administration button because he just knew what to do and how to handle it. The money got cut for the food and all that and then he says to me, we need to do something about the food and I said, no money gaffer. There`s my gold card, he gives me his gold card. He`s just such a likeable guy."
There were lighter moments too; Mo recalls one particular prank: "There was one time, they would put in £20 a week or something to get Lucozade and muffins. So, of course, Nipper gets back here and takes all the muffins and sticks them in Scotty Walker`s locker. Walker opens the door and says, oh, the muffins stealer!"
From National Stadium occasions - "the big occasions have been the pinnacle, the big occasions at the National Stadium was just a thrill" - to unforgettable East End Park comebacks, Mo`s memories are the Club`s memories. Two favourites stand out: coming from 3-0 down against Airdrieonians to win 4-3, with a Nikolay Todorov winner and THAT Martin Hardie goal against Raith Rovers.
What has kept him for three decades is simple: the people. "I love sitting on the bench and having the crack with the boys. I`ve never met a bad football player."
That bond lasts. "Ivo Den Bieman still comes over," Mo says, also naming Marc Millar and Stewart Petrie amongst those he remains close to.
His respect for fellow Kitmen across the country speaks to his character: "I`ve got respect for all the kit men because they`re the same as me, they`re on the go at 9 o`clock in the morning for a game. I give them a sandwich and a cup of tea because sometimes you go to places and you get nothing."
A Fitting Finale
As the curtain falls on an extraordinary chapter in the Club`s history, Mo Hutton`s stories and memories serve as a reminder that behind every successful Football Club, there are unsung heroes who care deeply, work tirelessly, and ensure football remains special.
`A Match For Mo` promises to be a fitting celebration, with SPFL Premiership side Aberdeen providing the opposition for what we hope will be a memorable afternoon at KDM Group East End Park.
