Sammy King of the Mascots

Author: Douglas Scott Date: Saturday, 19th Dec 1998

Club mascots from throughout Scotland gathered in Glasgow last week to take part in a BBC Scotland Friday Sportscene competition.

Sammy the Tammy was crowned "King of the Mascots" and can be seen receiving the silverware from none other than Chic Young. The diminutive presenter told Sammy "take that back to Dunfermline and tell them it's a trophy!"

The competition was run over four events in It's a Knockout style with the theme music running being the action. Competitors included Broxy Bear, Hoopy the Hound, Terry the Terrier, Hearty Harry, Angus the Bull, the Killie Squirrel, and representatives from Livingston and Queen of South.

The events were the hurdles where Sammy lifted the obstacles and still managed to be second; Bursting Balloons where Sammy lay on top of them to burst them; Chase the Bunny and Penalty Shoot out with Chic Young in goals. Sammy used his experience from East End Park to easily win the shoot out and lift the trophy.

Now does this mean that Sammy will represent Scotland in Europe. Do the BBC have plans for a "Jeux sans Frontieres" of leading Europen mascots?

Well done Sammy you certainly proved the most entertaining on the show and goes to prove why you are SCOTLANDS NO 1 CLUB MASCOT.
