Fivez community league comes to Dunfermline

Date: Thursday, 30th Mar 2006

Fivez, who specialise in organising community football leagues, are bringing new outdoor 6-a-side league to Woodmill High School which will kick off on Wednesday 26th April.

Fivez have seen their profile increase dramatically recently after winning an Innovation Award from the University of Stirling and also the Scottish Enterprise Forth Valley ‘Business in the Community’ award.

The community leagues are rapidly spreading throughout smaller towns and cities across Scotland and are proving to be a big hit in helping to improve the health and well-being of those that take part.

Teams taking part in the league will compete for cash prizes and trophies with the community league running every Wednesday from 6-8pm. There is space for twenty teams to enter and they will be split into two divisions depending on ability.

Teams will play an intense 30 minute match each week costing £20 (this works out at just £2.50 per player for a squad of 8) and there are a huge array of awards on offer including: trophies or cash for winners, individual trophies for runners-up, top goalscorer awards, player of the season awards and a fair play award.

Teams will also have the opportunity of playing against other sides from community leagues across Scotland in Fivez’ National Cup where the winners walk away with a cool £1000 cash.

Fivez Director Stuart Mitchell said, ‘We initially set Fivez up in January 2005 to allow those who would not normally take part in weekly football matches, due to cost, self esteem or geographic exclusion, the opportunity to participate. Our leagues encourage local people into weekly exercise, something that is massively important given Scotland’s alarmingly high rates of obesity.

Many of the young people who play in Fivez leagues would not normally do any other exercise. Sport is very good at helping to bring together individuals from different communities, who would not normally interact. This league in Dunfermline is our first in the Fife area although we already have successful leagues operating not far away in Bo’Ness, Falkirk and Stirling.’

Dunfermline and West Fife MP Willie Rennie, welcomed Fivez to Dunfermline saying, “This sounds a really exciting development and I wish Fivez all the best. There is little better than the buzz from a passionate game of 5 a side. It also gives everyone an opportunity to get the heart pumping and lungs expanded.

I was a goalkeeper when I was younger but more balls passed me by than I saved but if any teams are desperate I may even have a go myself.”

All matches are officiated by qualified referees while Fivez staff will attend the league each week to ensure the smooth running of fixtures and to deal with any queries or problems. There is no need for matching kit as Fivez provide bibs for those teams without kits.

Anyone over the age of 16 can enter and you do not need to be an organised or established team, you may simply be a group of friends, work colleagues or mates from the pub. The league will be fully affiliated to the SAFA.

Teams are advised to register online at www.fivez.net to avoid disappointment. Alternatively those with no internet access can contact Fivez on 01786 458015.
