Mendes is back in Scotland

Junior Mendes has returned to Scotland after having his contract terminated by Dunfermline last year.

The Jamaican born player has this week signed a one year deal with his old club St Mirren. This may come as a surprise to many Pars fans, as the 25 year old became the centre of a bitter row with the Buddies after he turned his back on Love Street, claiming that Dunfermline were a bigger club.

Mendes was signed by Jimmy Calderwood for £20,000, and it was hope that he would form a lethal partnership up front with Stevie Crawford in 2000/01 season. However, after an impressive debut Mendes failed to score a single goal in an SPL match during a period of time in which he started ten consecutive matches. His only goal came in a friendly match against Feyenoord.

Mendes lost his first team place after a woeful performance against St Mirren during a 2-1 defeat at Love Street. He was then injured for a long period of time, and only appeared in the first team after the SPL split in April. He did not make a first team appearance last season.

Consequently, his contract was terminated by mutual consent, and he was allowed to find another club.

Verdict :3/10. Great potentail, lightening speed, but failed to shine in the SPL.
