Injury blow for Chris McGroarty

Author: Philip Meldrum Date: Thursday, 20th Jun 2002

Chris McGroarty has been dealt a serious injury blow ahead of the Par's pre-season tours of New Zealand and Holland.

The ginger winger is experiencing a recurring problem with his hamstring, and he has already been omitted from the squad that is getting ready to fly off to New Zealand. This is likely to pave the way for Andre Karnebeek to cement his place in the first team - especially if Calderwood decides to play the Dutch man on the left side of midfield.

McGroarty first appeared in the Par's first team at the age of 17 - making his debut at Tannadice in a match that finished 1-1, when Dick Campbell was manager. Since 1999, McGroarty has been plagued by injuries, and he has yet to complete a whole season successfully.

His performances at the end of last season meant that the Airdrie born player gave Gary Mason a close run for his money in DAFC.NET'S "Young Player of the Season" award.

However, it is hoped that the youngster will be fit for the start of the new season, and it is possible that he will be in the team that will visit Celtic Park on the opening game of the season.
