Family join fan club of one
Date: Saturday, 29th Jun 2002John Mowat would be a one-man Dunfermline Athletic New Zealand Supporter's Club - if it wasn't for his kids. The Putaruru doctor is over the moon that his favourite football team is visiting New Zealand and he intends to see all three matches - including one at Waikato Stadium next week.
The 43-year-old was born in the Scottish city and has supported his `home' team since, even after emigrating in 1987. Many expats have set up their Kiwi version of a fan club, but Mowat said he was hampered by a lack of numbers. "I'm the only one as far as I know," he laughed.
However, he's sparked a recruitment drive - children Islay, aged 2, and Euan, 18 months, already have their Dunfermline replica kits.
Mowat has been through the peaks and troughs as a fan of "The Pars". And while they've failed to set Scottish football alight - they reached the semifinal of the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1969 and were pipped for the
Scottish League and Cup double in 1965 - the club has possessed two of the greatest figures in the history of Scottish football.
