Fans get red card for support
Date: Saturday, 29th Jun 2002Soccer's grip on the nation through the World Cup didn't extend to watching the All Whites at Wellington's WestpacTrust Stadium last night.
While millions of dollars have been invested on Cup games at the TAB in the past month, and tens of thousands of fans have watched television coverage of the matches, only 3500 spectators turned out for the national side's match against Scottish premier club Dunfermline Athletic last night.
It was 6500 short of New Zealand Soccer's break even figure.
Chief executive Bill MacGowan labelled the turnout "disappointing" but said it wasn't a financial disaster.
Some of the pain from the poor turnout was eased earlier in the day when MacGowan visited the TAB's national headquarters in Petone.
