Monday morning thoughts on heavy defeat....
Author: J Barber Date: Monday, 2nd Sep 2002Well, the embarrassment has not subsided after 24 hours. Hopefully the players will be feeling just as bad as the fans, giving them ample reason to rectify matters in the next match.
What went wrong? I think the televised destruction of that team with such ease makes it plain to see that something must be done. To have been picked apart whilst offering nothing like a reply was simply not good enough.
Now that the initial hurt experienced by Pars fans yesterday starts to sooth away, the adage of "the next game cannot come quick enough" certainly comes into play.
On Wednesday 11th September, Dunfermline will travel across the water to play Hibernian at Easter Road. This is a ground that Dunfermline have not won at since the days of Jock Stein (in the league at least) Cup winning teams, teams victorious in Europe, Leishman & Paton sides have all tried to come back from there with all the points. All have failed.
If there was EVER a time for that run to be broken, it would be now. Clubs live or die by the success of the 90 minutes played by 11 guys each week. Dunfermline would receive a massive boost by coming back from Hibs with all three points. Players/Managements and supporters would be able to archive the bad result this weekend and rightfully move on, rather than have it linger like a particularly nasty smell...
Hopefully, a decent Pars support will travel the short distance to show that the belief is still there. We all know how good this current side CAN be, it is simply a fact that they did little more than turn up yesterday. The basic errors and lack of effort applied at times was nowhere near acceptable for a Dunfermline team. No doubt Jimmy Calderwood will be analysing a video nasty over the next few days to pinpoint the main disaster areas.
Worse results have occured over the years, but perhaps not accompanied by such a poor performance from the first minute right through to the last.
Now would be the perfect time for Dunfermline to come fighting back with a vengeance.
